Philles to get Halladay lose Lee to Seattle

A three-way deal that would send Roy Halladay to Philadelphia and Cliff Lee to Seattle is "close" but "not done," according to two sources familiar with the negotiations.

As part of the deal, Halladay would agree to a three-year extension through 2013, with a vesting option that could lengthen the deal by another year or two, one source said. The extension is expected to guarantee Halladay in the neighborhood of $60 million, plus the $15.75 million he would make in 2010, the final year of his current contract.

According to a source who spoke with two teams involved in the trade, Toronto would get highly regarded Mariners pitching prospect Phillippe Aumont, Phillies catching prospect Travis d'Arnaud and another Phillies prospect in exchange for Halladay. Indications are that the Phillies have balked at Toronto's repeated requests for outfielder Domonic Brown, and the Phillies are offering highly touted outfielder Michael Taylor instead.

Seattle would send two additional prospects to Philadelphia in exchange for Lee, who is a year away from free agency.

As of late Monday afternoon, the extension had not been agreed upon. And the Blue Jays and Phillies were still haggling over the final prospect. In addition, Phillies doctors would have to sign off on Halladay's physical.

Before turning to Seattle, multiple sources say, the Phillies first attempted to complete a two-team deal with Toronto alone for Halladay. However, the Phillies refused -- as they had last summer -- to include their top pitching prospect, Kyle Drabek, in that trade. So they began looking for another team that could help them meet the Blue Jays' price.

Seattle became an attractive match because of Aumont, the Mariners' No. 1 pick in 2007 and a native of Quebec.

The Phillies also had to clear payroll space to accommodate the addition of Halladay. They attempted to do that by trading away Joe Blanton, but found they couldn't get enough back to enable them to make a Halladay deal.

SI.com first reported that the Phillies were close to acquiring Halladay.

Halladay has told friends he'd take less than market money to sign with the Phillies, sources told ESPN.com.

Halladay was entering the final year of his Toronto contract.

The Phillies tried to acquire Halladay last season but couldn't agree to terms with the Blue Jays. They then dealt for Lee instead.

Halladay, 32, is 148-76 lifetime with a 3.43 ERA. He won the 2003 Cy Young Award and finished in the top five in the Cy Young voting four other times.

Halladay went 17-10 with a 2.79 ERA in 32 starts for Toronto last season. He threw 239 innings and led the league with nine complete games.

Lee, who was acquired from the Indians on July 29 for four minor leaguers, quickly became Philadelphia's ace. Lee posted a 3.39 ERA in 12 starts for the Phillies and then went 4-0 with a 1.56 mark in five postseason outings, including 2-0 in the World Series.

Lee, the 2008 AL Cy Young winner with Cleveland, will make $8 million in 2010 and then be eligible for free agency.

Lee has told the Phillies he would like to stay but wants to be paid what the market will bear.

stupid stupid stupid move imo by the Philles

Lee almost single handedly got them to the World Series and now they dump him

Halladay has always been a little overated in my book and I would much rather have a good lefty in the playoffs than a right hander

Phillies took a step back on this trade imo

From what they were sayin on the radio the last week or so, Lee didnt want to be here and was gonna create a bidding war. The Phils had no choice but to act now or risk losing out on both of them.

If I had to choose between the two, I would rather have Lee, but Im not mad about it either way.

We are the best team in the NL, but unless we could have kept Lee along with getting Halladay, we cant beat Boston or the Yankees.

Lee is going to make 8 million this year and then be a free agent ,same as Halladay but Halladay is making 15 million this year. They are going to sign Halladay to 3 more years at 20 million a year.I'm sure Lee would more and gladly take that money.

But if he didnt want to play in Philly thats a whole different story.

Dont get me wrong I wouldnt be mad to get Halladay but just like you if I had the choice I'd take Lee

I think Seattle is the real winner here. Felix Hernandez and Cliff Lee as your 1-2 starters is as good as it gets in all of baseball. They got Chone Figgens too. Then you look at the Angels, who just lost Lackey. I can see Seattle winning the west now.

Lee: I thought I'd finish career in Philly

SEATTLE -- Cliff Lee thought he was staying in Philadelphia -- for the rest of his career.
The Phillies' postseason star proposed a routine counteroffer on a contract extension Wednesday, then headed for the Mississippi River near his Arkansas home to hunt.

He got some stunning news on the drive there.

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. called to tell Lee he had been traded to Seattle for three prospects in a four-team deal that brought Roy Halladay to the Phillies. It was the first time that two Cy Young Award winners were dealt on the same day.

Speaking by cell phone Thursday night while beginning a long-planned vacation in Puerto Rico, the 2008 AL Cy Young winner said he was in "disbelief and shock." The 31-year-old left-hander had been excited to rejoin the Phillies for a run at another World Series.

Instead, he's headed to his third team in five months.

"At first, I didn't believe it. I thought we were working out an extension with the Phillies," Lee said. "I thought I'd be spending the rest of my career there. ... I was under the impression they wanted to keep me there for a long time.

"In my mind, it was going to happen."

Lee was the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner when the Phillies got him from Cleveland on July 29. He went 7-4 with a 3.39 ERA down the stretch, then starred in the postseason by going 4-0 with a 1.56 ERA in five starts.

Lee earned both of the Phillies' wins in the World Series against the New York Yankees. He was wowed by what he called an "unbelievable" lineup and excellence from top to bottom in Philadelphia's organization.

While saying he was "disappointed, sure," he said he can't blame the Phillies for preferring Halladay.

"Basically, they had an opportunity to get the best pitcher in baseball," Lee said, realizing the Phillies moved him because they wanted to seize a chance to restock their minor league system. "I can't blame them for choosing Roy Halladay over me."

Lee was deer hunting on his property in Arkansas this week when his wife, Kristen, called him to relay reports he might be traded. He dismissed them as rumors -- especially, he said, when he asked the team and "the Phillies kind of downplayed it, made it seem like it wasn't real."

"Then the next morning I found out it was real," he said.

The 2008 All-Star, who entered the major leagues with the Indians in 2002, has one season and $9 million remaining on his contract. Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik said an extension with Seattle beyond 2010 was not part of the trade negotiations.

Lee said he is "not dead set" on becoming a free agent next winter.

"I'm open to see how it plays out," he said. "I can't give you an answer right now because I don't know what Seattle is all about."

He does know a few things about Seattle:

-Felix Hernandez is good. Lee will join this year's AL Cy Young Award runner-up atop a rotation that is now the envy of baseball.

"As far as just straight stuff goes, it'd have to be him and CC [Sabathia, a former teammate in Cleveland] neck and neck for the best pitchers I've played with," Lee said.

-Center fielder Franklin Gutierrez is a former teammate of Lee's with the Indians. The newest Mariner noted he now has a speedy, pitcher-friendly defense that includes Gold Glove right fielder Ichiro Suzuki, recently signed All-Star infielder Chone Figgins and 2004 All-Star shortstop Jack Wilson.

-Safeco Field is spacious, also pitcher-friendly and a great place to watch a game.

-The team that won 85 games last season is on the rise.

-And the city, to Lee, always "seemed like it was on the other side of the world" when he played here as a visitor. He's never been based farther west than his native Arkansas.

Lee has one other link with a Mariner, the most famous one. In 2004 he was suspended six games for throwing behind Ken Griffey Jr.'s head, when baseball's active home run leader was with Cincinnati. One inning earlier, Lee had given up the 499th home run of Griffey's career, and the superstar had paused to watch the ball's flight.

Griffey is coming back for Year Two of his reunion tour with Seattle in 2010.

"I hope he doesn't hold a grudge on me. I'll ask him if he does," Lee said, laughing and saying he's talked in passing with Griffey since and all seemed well.

Same goes for the surging Mariners. And they may not be done adding. They need a left fielder and are discussing whether to pursue a potential trade with the Chicago Cubs for mercurial outfielder Milton Bradley.

"We're not done yet," Zduriencik said
            .

Looks like Lee didnt want to leave ,Philly just didnt want him or they wanted Halladay more

Re: Philles to get Halladay lose Lee to Seattle

This whole thing is fuckin BS. They lead us to believe, that this was a 3 way deal, and the only way we could land Halladay was to trade Lee.

              Not the case.

We got some bum prospects from Seattle, for Lee? GTFO with that shit.

Even if we kept Lee this season, and lost him in free agency, we would have gotten two top 50 compensitory draft picks. I would rather have them then the "prospects"" we got from Seatlle.

Halladay, Lee, Hamels, Haap, Blanton would be the best staff in all of baseball, bar none. And with our lineup, we would have won minimum 100 games, and gone to another world series and probably have won it.

And this whole notion that it may have been about money this year? We got 6 mil from Toronto, that could have went right to Lee's 9 mil contract. So we keep lee basically for 3 mil.

Most of the fan base is not happy with this.

I'm not even a Philly fan and I think it was a stupid thing to do.

Lee and Halladay on the same staff with that line up hitting would no doubt have won a Worlrd Series as long as they didnt have any injuries
