Scientist, when will I learn how to use strength on the mat? I try not to "muscle stuff" because I don't want to throw technique out the window but my friend there tonight was telling me I still needed to learn to use my strength on the mat
Also..when starting on the knees WTF do I do to get the guy on his back..
Also..I pulled this off on someone tonight:
It didn't get me anywhere, but I bet it looked coolComment

Mat strength is something that just develops with time. If you mean, "when can I use my strength?" Now. Sometimes really strong guys stunt their own growth by successfully muscling things on smaller guys, thus never really learning how to grapple efficiently. But usually, IMO, it is better to just go ahead and try as hard as you can. Your strength is an asset, you should use it... but just don't be the guy that sprints and then dies and makes excuses the rest of the time. If you can't roll for 30 minutes, you are squeezing too hard. Also, don't squeeze to just squeeze. You really don't need to be very strong to be be a good grappler, your body position will do most of the work through a mechanical advantage. If you are just scissoring some poor guys head to stall, don't do that. But, if you need to force a kimura back, go for it. They need to learn how to defend properly.
If you start on the knees, you are basically wasting time. That is a false position, it never actually occurs in grappling or mma. We call it midget wrestling or midget judo (for gi). Don't practice that position at all. Pull guard, jump into a sweep (just use the sliding momentum to kick start your attempt), or offer up turtle and work a reversal. Knee wrestling is retarded, but if you want to do it, go under the front headlock (give him the guillotine/darce/anaconda) and work a front headlock series. This is position that a lot of guys in jj suck at, but is really common in wrestling. This is my front headlock series:
My ace in the hole, works at a very high percentage:
this will probably work best for you, since you are strong, but probably not very slick yet:
another option:
The bottom line is just refuse to do the whole stiff arming on your knees thing... it is stupid and not useful. It just cuts into the time you could be working on an actual position. If you don't want to pull guard, you could just offer turtle and work a kimura, Sakuraba style.Last edited by MMA_scientist; 08-08-2012, 09:34 AM.2012: +19.33

Thanks for those vids. Yeah, we don't have lots of room so we start on the knees a lot and I get in a lot of stalemates just doing the stiff arming on the knees thing...it's annoying. I always end up pulling guard. If I make it to training tomorrow night I will try and put my neck out there and let them put me in a headlock and try those things from the video.
As for the strength thing..

Also another thing about grappling...it must be because I am pretty new (well this time around..it's been awhile and I used to only train 2x a week and that was 2 years or so ago)..when I get mount.. I am clueless. The only thing I know from there is armbar and triangle..and I'm not good at locking them up. I always work for mount but I can never do anything from thereComment

That's what I am trying to avoid. Last night I got real tired near the end and was on bottom in side control...had a hard time getting my hips out and escaping etc..so I just did something dumb and put my arms underneath him and lifted him up and threw him off of me...it worked..but I don't want to always try and resort to that because I know someone good will stop that and just advance position/sub me.

When he curls to defend his arm, armbar on the other side, or take a gift wrap. You can do a gift wrap choke, arm triangle, arm bar, triangle, mounted guillotine, americana, kimura... that's about it. In no gi, you really have to get him to react first, since you can't threaten with the collars. So just make him move by forcing an arm down. For me, in no gi, I like to get kimuras from everywhere. The kimura and the darce are available from a lot of positions. The darce is very easy to set up on inexperienced grapplers from side control.Attached FilesLast edited by MMA_scientist; 08-08-2012, 11:50 AM.2012: +19.33

Just put in time, you will start figuring it out. But unless you have very good sparring partners or a high level teacher, you will stall out at around the mid blue level. That is plenty good to beat up your friends. I have time and athleticism, but my fat body and poor work ethic keep me from ever being a very high level grappler myself. I can roll, i know stuff, but I am not a very beautiful grappler... it is usually ugly as hell. Speaking of, I a working on a youtube account now. Will post up my comp from last month. I came in fat at 215... so you can see a fat kid beating up on a much more athletic guy. The vid is shaky as hell though.2012: +19.33
