Yes, Mac people are like cult members.
He is, but his performances are always over the top. One thing that dude knows nothing about is subtlety.
I loved him in Gangs of New York and There Will Be Blood. But I actually kind of wish Liam Neeson had stayed in the title role for this one.I heart cockComment

Hmm. I don't find him to be that over the top. I don't think I have ever seen him in a role where he flubbed it, but it doesn't seem like he does many movies (I can only think of a few that I have seen, and they were all Oscar nominees).
I don't want to see Qui-Gon Jin as Lincoln. I glad DDL is in the role.
Speaking of movies, "The Master" is getting some pretty rave reviews.2012: +19.33

I remember reading something once where the writer was talking about Daniel Day Lewis's performances and he said that he "acts up a tornado." I think that's a good description. His performances are good, and I will usually watch a movie just because he's in it, but they are very "acting-y" performances. That is, it seems like he is trying really, really hard and even though he is entertaining to watch I always feel like I'm watching him "act" like a character rather than "be" a character.
I feel the same way about Leonardo DiCaprio, for instance. I like to watch him perform, but I always feel like, damn, this dude is ACTING his ass off!
Contrast that with someone like Gary Oldman who really BECOMES the character and whose performances cause you to forget that he's not really the character that's on screen. That's what makes Oldman perhaps the greatest actor working today.
I've heard that. I'm actually not particularly impressed by the trailer, but I like Anderson, I like Hoffman and I like Phoenix so I expect it to be good.I heart cockComment

Interesting. DDL usually plays pretty large characters, so I can't say I fault him. I don't feel like I am watching DDL, I think the opposite, that he really becomes the character in the movie, just that the character is usually really intense. I also don't feel that way about DiCaprio, who I think is a fine actor. I am really aware of certain actors, but DDL and DiCaprio are not two that I feel that way about. Tom Cruise, is one that I just feel is always Tom Cruise, I am just really aware of him when I am watching him, even though I still like him OK. Sean Penn is another one that I just feel is trying way too hard in every role. He was in some good stuff, but I think really overrated.I remember reading something once where the writer was talking about Daniel Day Lewis's performances and he said that he "acts up a tornado." I actually think Hoffman is one of the best actors out there, I like him a lot. You know what is an underrated movie? The Talented Mr. Ripley.Originally posted by SPXI've heard that. Well Tom Cruise is just Tom Cruise. I don't even feel like he plays a character. His character is "Tom Cruise," i.e. "Tom Cruise as a bar tender," "Tom Cruise as a spy," or "Tom Cruise as a German WWII officer."
A lot of actors are like that, especially big stars. The one who really bucks that trend is Brad Pitt. Brad Pitt is underrated I think, when it comes to his actual acting ability.
Agreed.
Hoffman is great. I pretty much always like watching him work.
I saw The Talented Mr. Ripley way back when it was in the theater. I don't remember much about it, but I remember being a little disappointed by it. Maybe I should watch it again.I heart cockComment

Yeah, he is not too bad. I think he usually does a good job, especially recently as he is in more serious roles. Ever seen Kalifornia? He does a good job as a dimwitted sociopath in that and I think it was probably about 15 years ago.
I didn't like it much when I saw it at first either, but I re watched a couple years ago, and it was really good. Hoffman is in it, and he steals most of the scenes, but Matt Damon does a good job in it too. I also think it ends up being kind of insightful, and has a pretty good setting in Europe.Originally posted by SPX

This stupid film is just the excuse to go and burn anything american. IWS is exactly right...we need to just get the hell out of there all together.
Do a role reversal in your mind, how do you think America would react if we had Chinese troops stationed in our country, just strolling around town in their armored vehicles and dropping bombs on neighborhoods every now and again. Shit would get real in America real quick.
Do not get me wrong, we are dealing with a primitive culture. but that does not mean we have the moral right to educate and civilize them. Let them F'n be.
And 9/11 was blowback from us sending troops into Saudi arabia during the first Gulf war. just like this shit is blowback from getting involved in the supposed Arab spring uprising.Comment

I was thinking about you the other day as I was looking at AAPL wondering how I screwed that up so badly. If you recall, I bought it at $363, felt happy that I sold it at $4- something. As usual, I hate myself now. But if I had held it, I would definitely be selling it now (watch it double again now).2012: +19.33
