I could see him losing a three rounder. A 5 rounder would favor Fitch more with the weight cut that I would think would have to be involved for Harris.

I don't know if I ever told you that one my friends is a body builder. He is super insecure about his body and very worried about whether his mass enough to pull the ladies. Needless to say, I make fun of him almost incessantly.

I had to look up 3DMJ... because I assumed it was some sort of cult the way the guy was talking. I really can't stand people who spout hyper positive vibes all the time, it really seems like they are trying way too hard. I am an actual optimist that is almost never "down" or depressed (I do get irritated a lot though), but that type of rhetoric gets on my nerves.

I do think you mentioned it. Does he compete? Or does he just do it as a personal thing?

I chuckled a bit, but at the same time I have to confess it sounds somewhat familiar.

I also had no idea who 3DMJ was.

When I was younger I also had a tendency to ridicule overly positive people--and guess I still can if it gets out of control--but as I've gotten older I've come to appreciate the value of making a conscious attempt to have a more positive attitude. Because unlike you, if I don't keep that shit in check, I tend to skew toward the negative pretty easily.

I am pretty sure he just does it as a hobby. He is way into it though, and actually pretty shredded. He is a thin guy that has to work to add mass, so shredded is not that impressive to him. I would prefer to be lean and skinny, I really don't know why people want to get huge muscles. When I tell him that, he talks about how all the ridiculous looking meatheads all have beautiful girls, and maybe if he was huge, he would pull tail too.
If he does compete, he doesn't tell me about it. He probably thinks I would show up and heckle him, which I would. He would be up there flexing, and in the back of the room you would hear "your ass isn't veiny enough, flex your ass more".

He does take pictures of himself all oiled up, which I did ridicule via my wife's facebook.

Turns out, I am actually not very nice. I have always thought that people liked me and I was nice, but it is finally dawning on me that I am actually a dick and no one likes me very much.

I don't mind if they are positive... just shut the fuck up about and stop trying to convince everyone all the time. My wife has a friend that is a fitness crazed nut, and she won't shut the fuck up about how everyone else is dooming themselves, positive this, never quit that, apples, fuckin juicing, blah blah. I secretly hope she gets some sort of disease so she will shut the fuck up with it all. Not cancer, but maybe diabetes or diverticulitis.

A lot of people feel like you do, but I know that for me, when I see a guy who has basically carved his body into a Greek statue, I can't help but be in awe. I think it's cool. I think it's a very desirable look and the best among the bodybuilders almost come across as superheroes, like they've taken their human body and transcended its usual limitations.

Personally, I'm a big fan of the "classic bodybuilders." That is, the guys who lived the life and competed mostly between the 50s and 70s and have that "Grecian Statue" look (as opposed to the current mass monster drug look of the pros today).

A couple of examples would be. . .

                      Steve Reeves

                      John Grimek

                      Richard Baldwin

And then at the upper end of the mass spectrum. . .

                      Arnie

                      Serge Nubret

                      Bob Paris

It's after the 80s when shit started getting really ridiculous. BBers starting taking drugs in record doses and, unfortunately, turned more into sideshow freaks who looked more alien than human rather looking like Greek gods. Now we're in the era of guys like Ronnie Coleman and Jay Cutler. I consider guys like that interesting to look at as a sort of curiosity, but I certainly wouldn't aspire to look like them.

The natural bodybuilder scene is KIND OF like the classic scene, especially the pre-Arnold scene when Reeves was competing. But instead of shooting for super amounts of mass they shoot for the shredded, super-ripped look where every single muscle is separated and striations are all over. I don't really like that either.

A good example of that would be Brian Whitacre:

For me, the goal is a good balance between mass and leanness, so something akin to the "classic bodybuilders" who were big but not massive and ripped but didn't look like they popped out of an anatomy book. The big question is what can I achieve with nothing more than food, legal supps and training, considering my genetics.

I don't think so. My understanding is that he's been both drug tested AND polygraph tested and has always passed. He's only like 165 lbs at 5'9" or something like that. He's just really lean.

Why does everyone think that anyone who has a good physique is on roids? There are plenty of guys in MMA who have physiques that are comparable to a lot of bodybuilders. How about someone like Urijah Faber, GSP or Palhares? But I doubt any of those three are juicing and definitely not all of them.

Maybe im just too cynical, but i would guess faber, palhares, and gsp are all on some roids. For damn sure palhares.

When i see those classic body builders, or the modern ones, i just seesomething that doesnt seem very functional. I just think... that guy probably looks ridiculous playing basketball. I dont think mma fighters are nearly as big as body builders. I mean even gsp's legs dont look like those
