No, but seriously, I wish I had thought about that before I had kind of established my identity with UMMA. Maybe I'll do that for the next mag I right for!

Saw this over on the grappling forum. Even if you don't like grappling, it gives you an idea the skill levels of the top guys.

Marcelo Garcia (a top 5 bjj artist) rolling with Ben Askren (olympic wrester)

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30Ujz5sC ... r_embedded

My god, Marcelo just toys with him. I think Marcelo might be able to beat him in a wrestling match.

There is a video out there of Marcelo tapping Arlovski repeatedly too. I think they should start a video series: "Marcelo vs. Guys You Used to Think were Good Until you Saw Them Roll with Marcelo"

          Re: Off topic thread(basketball,movies,etc whatever)

^^ That last one was just humiliation I think. I think he was giving it to him because you can sort of see that Ben is getting pissed after about the 6th tap and starts to try to turn it up on him.

Props to Ben though, he was obviously trying to work his bjj and not just pin him (not that I think he could- because he couldn't). Ben is one of the few wrestlers that swallow their pride and try to learn bjj for real, not just anti-bjj. He is quickly becoming one of my favorites.

Scientist, explain this bit from Royce's wiki entry:

"In an interview that took place January of 2010, Royce stated that he had adopted his fathers stance on belt promotions and had gone back to wearing a dark blue belt, as opposed to the more widely accepted black belt."

              Re: Off topic thread(basketball,movies,etc whatever)

Helio started wearing a blue belt (traditionally white-blue-purple-brown-black). When asked about it, he said he liked the way it looked.

It is said that Helio wore the blue belt as a statement that BJJ had gone down the wrong path and that he wanted to bring it back to where it started. There has been a movement by some of the original guys to get bjj back to its self defense roots. There really are two different kinds of bjj schools of thought. There are the guys that do all the crazy guard play and inverted guard stuff... it is basically using the sport bjj rules. Then there are the closed guard posture control guys.

I had not heard that about Royce and would actually be surprised if that is true... a few years ago Marc Laimon said Royce rolls at the blue belt level. He may not be a great bjj guy, but he is definitely a legit black belt.

But him saying that is saying that he wants to get back to the root of bjj, closed guard, self defense.

                Re: Off topic thread(basketball,movies,etc whatever)

^^^ Interesting. Thanks for the clarification.

It's definitely true that sport and self defense are two different things. Obviously many of the techniques will work in both situations--a jab or an RNC are critical weapons in both--but if you have a cushioned pad beneath you and you know that certain techniques are disallowed, then you're going to do a lot of things that you wouldn't (or at least shouldn't) do in a parking lot when there's no ref present.

I'm mildly surprised, though, that Helio is not happy about his sport's skyrocketing popularity and that he doesn't simply embrace both aspects, instead of saying that it's going down the wrong path.

                  BTW, LOL @ Marc Laimon.

Serra would own him again if they met.

Well Helio is dead. But all of this inverted guard and deep half stuff was sort of peaking right before he died.

There are some really cool sport bjj sweeps that have no application if someone is punching. I really like Ryan Hall and Jeff Glover. Especially Glover. I actually use a lot of GLover's game in my guard game... but if you go watch him you can see that he would get his ass kicked in mma (assuming he tried to use some of that stuff). Interestingly though, some of the deep half stuff has been working in mma. Wilson Reis used it against Shad Lierly and lil Nog used deep half to sweep Brilz.

Ryan Hall's inverted guard stuff is cool to look at, but he would die if he tried it in mma.

The original Gracie clan was all about judo and wrestling cross training. Even Royce was taking fools down. Most of them were Judo bb's as well. Rickson was a national champion in wrestling. They all had takedown games too. They were not into butt flopping. They believed in pulling guard, but not the butt flopping you see today.

Laimon is a fag. I was actually with Serra on that one. You have to stick up for your boys. Serra and Royce would both fuck Laimon up.

But really, the top competitors are bread an butter guys. Romulo Barral, Roger Gracie, Braulio Estima, Marcelo... they don't do too much crazy stuff. You don't see guys like Eddie Bravo winning anything. Even Glover, who I like a lot, has never won a really world level comp.

Cobrinha (Rubens Charles) is top 10 and he does some really crazy stuff. He is super fun to watch.

Didn't Eddie Bravo give Royler a run for his money back in ADCC a few years ago?

I know he didn't win anything huge but he seems like someone who is constantly looking for new ways to revolutionize things but still true to the basics for the most part. I could be wrong though, admittedly I don't follow Brazilian Jiu Jitsu by itself.

By "run for his money" you really meant "choked his ass out", right?

But yeah that's pretty much his claim to fame.

He did beat Royler in ADCC. His one and only win, and he went on to lose his next match to Leo Viera 20-0.

He is all marketing. He has never had a successful student in any competition of any importance. His stupid ass rubber guard was "invented" 30 years before he wrote a book about it. Nine Schembri was using "rubber guard" in competition while Eddie was still living in his mom's basement, where he belongs. He admits AMcahdo taught him the lockdown. He never revolutionized anything. Jean Jaque taught him everything he knows. Eddie is a legit blackbelt, but he went off the reservation a long time ago.

He is a joke and his gay music sucks balls. He caught Royler napping. Royler was up bu about 15 points and was dominating him, and Eddie caught Royler in a triangle (just a plain triangle, no rubber guard). He got his ass whipped in the next fight and never competed again.

Eddie does not belong in the same sentence as Royler. It is one of the great blackmarks on bjj. It is like Hallman beating Hughes. It just happened, but Hallman is not anywhere near as good as Hughes.

In short, Eddie is a fuck and I don't want to hear his name again.
