But is it really? The purpose was to set things up so that people of any weight could participate in the sport and get a fair fight. At the time, the perception, at least, was that ability didn't really go up with size after 220 pounds or so. When the best fighters in the world are 220-235 pound guys like Fedor, Cro Cop, Nog, and Couture, it's hard to say those size guys need to be protected from the 265-ers by putting them in another class.
On the other hand, if guys like Lesnar and Carwin who cut to 265 never let go of the HW championships, I'm sure you'll see more calling for a Cruiserweight class.
