    LOL

For some reason the phrase "functional strength" just came to me and I was overwhelmed by how retarded it is, and yet I see it bandied about on forums quite a bit.

What the fuck is "dysfunctional strength"? I've never heard of any strength that only activates when you want to do a bench press and at no other times.

    Retarded.

You can't understand how doing nothing but isolation exercises might not be the most useful way to train for moving a sofa?

My Grandma is almost 70 years old and she can move a sofa, AND SHE DOESN'T EVEN TRAIN FUNCTIONAL STRENGTH FOR IT

Sure, but I don't know ANYONE who trains that way. The statement is usually made in regard to muscular MMA guys who look like they train like bodybuilders. So they're probably doing a lot of bench presses, overhead presses, rows, squats, and deadlifts in addition to their curls and leg extensions and whatever else the fuck they do.

So they get bigger and stronger and can lift more, and that doesn't have any direct relevance to MMA? The sort of strength gained isn't "functional?" So it wouldn't help you overpower your opponent on the mat or even improve your ability to knock people out?

Yeah, it's pretty stupid in that context. As if all high-level athletes don't strength train.

GSP says he lifts weights for aesthetic purposes only and not for his performance.

GSP speaks in soundbytes. English is GSP's 2nd language.

GSP did say that. I agree with him, it really doesn't help very much. Ben Askren has said the same thing as well.

I hear the term "functional strength" all the time like this "Barry can't lift shit in the weight room, but damn, he has functional strength, feels like a bear when he grabs you..." It doens't really make sense to describe it "functional strength", but I think it makes sense when it is used in context to refer to someone who does not look strong or cannot lift a lot of weight, but still has brute strength.

I'll say this shit. There was a time when I benched 95 pounds for reps and I was told by people I judo'd that I was pretty strong for a 120 lb guy.

I've almost doubled my bench now and I have no reason to doubt that that increase in gym strength would also translate into an increase in judo strength.
