It seems like the brain has these random neural firings going on all the time in the background. They're normally flooded and drowned out by all the information we get from our senses, but when they're not, our brain struggles to interpret them and turns them into wacky shit like hallucinations or dreams. If anything meditation (the trippy kind, not the simply relaxing kind) seems like an attempt to duplicate the effects of an isolation tank w/o the tank.

I read about the shit I'm talking about in the non-fiction book "The Men Who Stare at Goats." Not sure if you're familiar with it. They made a movie based on it but, from the trailers it least, the movie looked more like a parody of the book than a real adaptation. (Though the book itself didn't take itself overly seriously.)

It was like 7 years ago or so when I read it, but from what I remember this machine was specially designed and the guy who built it charged people like $30,000 to use it. It also pissed off a lot of Zen masters.
