I don't think anything was controversial there. Chess is no more a sport than monopoly- that is not even arguable. It is on ESPN, but so os poker and spelling bees.

In some ways, I feel like those things are all sports, because it is COMPETITION that defines something as a sport. Once you have people competing, the activity has been sportified. But I do think it's arguable.

Horse racing I guess could be argued, but to me that is a sport for horses. Jockey's may have some athletic effect on the race, but I mean, it is the horse running.

What if there were no jockeys at all? Does it matter that the competitors aren't human?

Skateboarding is a sport, but I thought Lords of Dogtown was about kids creating the movement, doing street stuff. I have seen it, but I guess it did not stay with me, because I don't remember the comps.

It was a good movie, so just watch it again.

Surfing is a sport, just like competition skateboarding.

If it's in the X-Games, it's a sport.

Figure skating, I really don't classify as a sport personally, but I guess it is. It definitely takes athletic ability... I guess just because it is dancing on ice I don't think it shoudl count. If diving is a sport, I guess ice skating has to be. But don't they judge for things like smile and outfit? I don't know, I can think of no other reason to wear sequins though.

Cheerleading, I see similarly. They are people that cheer for the sport that is happening behind them. I guess the actual cheering that happens is separate from cheer competitions... I don't know. I guess it counts, but it shouldnt.

I think you have to understand the intricacies of both activities.

There is both a mental component and a physical component. The mental comes in the form of creating routines that are more creative and more difficult to perform than the other teams/competitors, as well as the ability to perform under pressure. Then the physical comes in the form of executing those routines without errors. A double back tuck is going to score higher than a back handspring. And the more errors . . . the lower the score. It's just like in MMA, you may come out knowing how to throw a punch or a kick, but you have to be able to actually do it successfully to win.

If you think about it like that then I don't see why you'd have any problems calling either figure skating or cheerleading a sport.

Competition can't be what defines something as sport. Otherwise all games are sports, checkers, sorry, nintendo, guitar hero- sports. There clearly has to be some physical component, but I guess the degree of physicality required varies from person to opinion.

I just don't like "sports" that are purely judged. Diving and gymnastics are examples... I mean, they judge you on your routine and your execution as they see it. You have opportunity to overcome the judge's opinion of what you did. Some sports are judged, like MMA or boxing, but you also have some control over your fate. That is the same issue I have with X games sports... sure they are fun to watch, but it is more an acrobatic display to me than a real sport. It is not really competition true competition to me... it is like the BCS, but worse, because not only do they decide who gets to play, they decide who wins based on subjective criteria.
