I have to give a persuasive speech next week in speech class. Any good ideas for topics? I was thinking about doing legalizing gambling but I have no idea why we should do that. I was also thinking about doing a lulzy speech and persuading the audience to use body wash, mainly because I want to start out the speech with a recitation of the old spice commercial:

Why not go with something you know a lot about.........thats too easy. Why not powerlifting ?

USD all-time leading scorer charged in point-shaving case


The University of San Diego’s all-time leading scorer, a former coach and another player were charged Monday with running a sports betting business and impacting the outcome of games.

Brandon Johnson, who leads the school in scoring and in assists, former assistant coach Thaddeus Brown, and Brandon Dowdy were charged.

Police did not get into details about how the business operated or how many games could have been affected.

However, authorities did say that they investigated specific USD games in February 2010, and January 2011. Last February San Diego lost six of its seven games, covering just once over that span while the club won only once in nine games this January. They covered just three times over that span.

Johnson finished his final year at the University of San Diego last season, but the report indicates he took a bribe to impact the results of those games in question. Brown coached in the 2006-2007 and Dowdy was also a member of the team that year as well.

U.S. Attorney Laura Duffy said that Johnson “was intricately involved in both the illegal gambling business and in the sports bribery schemes," in a news conference today.

There were 10 people charged in all to commit sports bribery, conduct an illegal gambling business and marijuana distribution. The will face up to five years in prison and $250,000 in fines if convicted.

Whenever I hear stories like that it always seems to me that you'd need the whole team on board to make a predictable impact. Seems it would be hard for just one player to do that. This, of course, doesn't even take into account that you never know how the other team is going to perform.
