Really? I don't. I think of them as inexperienced adults.

I actually think of adulthood as beginning at 14, because that's the age that I feel a person could--if they had to to survive--hold a job, keep an apartment, and actually live their lives without assistance from people older than them. That is, they have the physical and mental capabilities of taking care of themselves if necessary.

In some states it is like that (with the age spread varying), but in many, it is just a straight up age 16. Indiana used to be one of those states, but now I think we are doing the age spread thing.

I don't think of them as adults at all... It varies of course according the kid, but generally, I think of a 16 year old as mostly a kid. For me, I can't really think of you as a potential peer until you have been out of high school for at least a year. You are just too dumb and you are not a fully developed human being.

Roger is meat and potatoes old school Gracie jj. He plays closed guard, he gets on top and smashes. Basically, he does Rickson style jj, get to mount or the back, then submit. He is just very tight and technical. Also, his mount is virtually inescapable. But honestly, what make him the best is his guard passing skill, IMO. His guard is good in that he can get on top pretty well, but he is not the best guard player at all. He is not even top 10 IMO.

Marcelo is just inventive and he is a master at taking the back and guillotine chokes. There is quote that goes something like "Most guys: if I don't get the choke, then what is the next move... Marcelo: there is no next move, I am going to get the choke."

Jacare stood out because of his athleticism. He was not as technical or smooth as Xande or Roger, but he had very good takedowns (that is how he beat Roger, he got a takedown, and then ran away for the rest of the match- though ROger did manage to break his arm even in defeat). He is explosive and quick and scrambles well.

Rafa Mendes is the new Marcelo, he is just making shit up out there. He does all sorts of inventive stuff, but has his basics down of course.

Popovitch is sort of like Jacare in that he is a physical specimen. He has a well rounded game, takedowns, passing, etc. He is not really a guard player either.

Rodolfo is just all around, he is also a freak athlete, has very good judo and very good passing skills. He mostly wins from top position.

Braulio is the reigning ADCC absolute champion. He is a guard player, and he has a killer reverse triangle, he got like 4 guys with it.

I have actually rolled with Braulio and Roger. Two totally different sensations of getting my ass beat. Braulio is not strong, I actually think I am considerably more powerful that he is, but I didn't even feel the sweep coming, and I was suddenly mounted. But up until then, I felt like I had some semblence of control over my fate. It was all a ruse of course, but he allows you to choose your demise. With Roger it was just a helpless feeling of domination and his mount is better than you would even think. Every time you breath in, he settles in lower and takes the space away, so after about 15 seconds, you just feel like you want out. BUt the usual tricks of shrimping or bridging are totally pointless. It is a matter of getting choked from mount, or giving your back and getting choked from the back.


Just for viewing pleasure, I recommend Rubens Charles (cobrinha), who is one the best guys over the last decade and has a fun style to watch.

Zak is older than me. I always forget how old SPX is, I think almost 30. Luke is right there too, like close to 30.

But I think my sensibilities have something to do with the fact that I got an early start. I was out of the house 3 weeks after high school. I was married at 23. I was practicing law for real at 24. So I been a grown up for while now.

I think of them as "young adults" because they have the capability of functioning as such, like I said. But the other reason is that I have met some 16 year old who are a fuckload more mature and responsible than a lot of 40 year olds I've met. So what that tells me is that you really can't make those decisions on age alone. Below about 14 the situation is different. I mean, at 8 years old you are not even physically or mentally capable of understanding things to the level of living in the world unassisted.

But considering you have 40 year olds who act like children, and yet they are still considered "adults", the whole thing is a joke when it comes to the label "adult" really meaning anything.
