I saw the Adjustment Bureau last night. It was watchable, but ultimately not very good. Could have been much better though. It was basically just a novel idea, and that was it. No development in the story or characters.

Agree ,watched it when it was playing in theatres and was pretty disappointed.

I actually thought The Adjustment Bureau was pretty good. I went into it knowing almost nothing about the movie and was pleasantly surprised. I think that beyond the concept, it was also helped tremendously by the very solid performances.

I knew nothing about it either... like I said, the ride was ok, but after the movie, I was just like "so what." I didn't liek how Damon's character just swallowed the thing and immediately went defiant for a girl. I mean, I would have liked to see him struggle with the whole idea of reality at least for 1 second. He was just like, Ok, there is an Omnipotent plan maker, there are these Buereau guys... I don't agree with their philosophy. He never struggled with the reality of it at all... and the way he was willing to go to his death even with his new found knowledge for a girl he barely knew...

It was all just too simple. They never really developed why the Bureau guys were there and how. Why the black angel was so willing to defy everything for this random guy... it just didn't make any sense. It was like they had an idea to discuss the issues of determinism, but then could not formulate an actual cohesive story around teh idea.

Like I said, there was a lot more they could have done. They could have made the movie make more sense. They could have made us care about Damon and Blunt's characters a little more (basically, they are ONLY motivated by each other's company), they could have explored the themes of determinism and free will a lot more.

Actually, now that I write all that out, I am going to go ahead and give a thumbs down.

I agree that the movie's not perfect, but no movies are, so I just enjoyed it for what it was.

As for Damon being so motivated to be with the girl, I thought that was explained--in a previous plan, they were supposed to be together and the ripple of effects of that were playing out in the present. So Damon really had no control of his desire to be with her, he just had a strong conviction that that's the way it was supposed to be.

And I thought the black angel helping Damon was also explained. He facilitated Damon's journey toward taking control of his life, an act that was praised at the end. So he wasn't really rebelling against the Maker, it only appeared that way. He was actually doing the opposite.
