Palhares is just an asshole. His manager is probably worried he is going to fuck up his ufc contract.

Someone posted a while back, like a couple years ago, that Palhares was "simple" in the fact that he is probably functioning in the borderline intellectual range. Add to that a poor upbringing in the favelas, and it is not too surprising that he doesn't act right.2012: +19.33

I actually listened to that interview yesterday and I remember something being mentioned about the 4th grade. I wasn't clear on whether he was saying that Palhares never made it past the 4th grade or if he has the intellect of a 4th grader . . . but it was something about the 4th grade.I heart cockComment

yeah Palhares strikes Me as someone who's like highly functioning developmentally disabled or something like that. It could just be his upbringing and the lifestyle he had prior to becoming a well paid fighter coupled with a low IQ or social issues though.2013: +8.24u(increased unit size on 5/19)

That doesn't surprise Me to be honest. Even with a basic education someone is much better off than with none at all. Just the basics of reading and writing will take a person further in this world than nothing at all, it's something to build on at least.2013: +8.24u(increased unit size on 5/19)

There are plenty of American athletes that are the same way. Look at OJ Simpson- the guy is functioning at like a 2nd grade level... he can barely read and write. He is probably at least mildly retarded. I read a letter that OJ wrote when I was in college and it was like some backwards words scrawled in crayon. I mean, it is not like Palhares is Corky or something, but there are a lot of people that have low IQ's, anything under 70 is considered mildly mentally retarded, but something like 1 out of 20 people are that low... probably about 30% of the people working in fast food restaurants are actually sort of retarded. The world is a lot dumber than you might think. It is sometimes hard to tell until that someone is "slow" until you really start asking them questions.2012: +19.33

Vince Young scored a '6' on the Wunderlic... he is probably not much better off than Palhares. And he is a QB, imaging how many offensive tackles there are that are worse off than Young. I don't know how a Wunderlic score correlates to IQ, but I cannot imagine that scoring a 6 (out of 50?) for test that you were probably professionally prepared for, correlates to a very high level of functioning.
I wish sports were as much about intelligence as pundits try to make them, but they're not.2012: +19.33

The sad thing about a score of 6 is that the trick with the Wunderlic is its fairly brutal time limit. I don't think it's really even supposed to be a "Can you do these problems?" test; it's a "How many of these can you do in X minutes?" test.Comment

^ agreed. I love to listen to all these grapplers talk about how bjj is mental chess and this and that... it is about reaction, timing, strength, and speed. That's it. People want to believe there is more to it than that, but just like every other sport, it is muscle memory. Have you ever read about Multiple Intelligences theory (seems like we have has this convo before)? It defines "kinesthetic intelligence" as an actual type of intelligence, which in the grand scheme of things actually makes sense, in that it is a way for your brain to connect things and it is something you really don't have a lot of control over (much like your more widely recognized "logical-mathmatical" intelligence).
It is pretty interesting reading if you have not checked it out.
So even though the Wunderlic may have an inverse relationship to performance, "intelligence" cannot by definition have an inverse relationship - since athleticm is a type of intelligence.2012: +19.33
