Saturday’s Tampa Bay Downs card includes the co-featured Gasparilla Stakes and Wayward Lass Stakes, the latter kicking off the late pick 4. Horseplayers tackling that sequence will play for an additional 1 Million 1/ST Rewards Points in a Hit & Split promotion. First post will be 12:30 pm ET with the late pick 4 starting in Race 7 at 3:32 pm ET. Let’s get to work.

Tampa Bay Downs: Race 7 | Wayward Lass Stakes

Late-running Kentucky Oaks runner-up #6 Drexel Hill came back solidly in November off the layoff in the Mother Goose. She’s never faced elders and the pace scenario here can be orchestrated by a trio of Saffie Joseph Jr. trainees, so she has some challenges. Respect her while noting the Joseph runners are difficult to separate and not worthy of making the ticket 4 times the price in a 6-horse field.

Tampa Bay Downs: Race 8 | allowance

#4 Mystic Sea for Bill Mott and #2 Perky for Miguel Clement have to be considered off these connections at Tampa. But a couple of stats plays merit depth in this race, including jockey Antonio Gallardo aboard #3 Expecting a Winner. If you’re concerned about the mare stretching out a bit in distance, not this jockey is 26% winners and 15-35 in the exacta over 9 furlongs on turf at Tampa the last 3 years with a $1.58 profit for every $1 bet. He rides the trip best. Also include #8 Frida for a Jose D’Angelo barn that is a fantastic 10: 4-3-0 in Tampa 9F turf races the past 3 years with $19 and $21 winners ($2.56 ROI for every $1 bet).

Tampa Bay Downs: Race 9 | maiden

Experienced horses win about twice the rate at first-time starters historically in Tampa 3-year-old maiden special weight sprints at this trip the past decade. Only 3 of these 12 have appeared in the afternoon so far, so the likelihood of a rookie obviously increases. But experienced filly #2 Inspire Courage is most interesting to me on the cut-back in distance. She’s fast enough in prior turf sprints to play at this trip and note sire Medaglia d’Oro gets a strong 19% winners on the Tampa dirt with a $1.33 ROI for every $1 bet. She’s bred to handle the surface change and gets Lasix for the first time. Among the first-timers, #7 Princess Vekoma’s sire Vekoma is a strong 17: 3-6-2 on the Tampa dirt with more than 50% in the exacta, while #8 Muffin Thief’s sire Maximus Mischief gets an outstanding 22% winners on the local main track … this one has a bullet workout for the first try.

Tampa Bay Downs: Race 10 | maiden

#7 Celtic Motif has had 7 chances to break her maiden, but her only 2 in US maiden races were very good second-place finishes for Chad Brown (who wins nearly 33% in Tampa turf MSW in January starts). She’s an obvious threat. #5 Queen Dancing got no pace help at Gulfstream, but ran on decently and her start at Keeneland puts her in contention for Bill Mott. You could likely stop there. A couple of others to consider on back-up tickets are useful enough, but not required. Sharp-training British export #6 Vronti adds Lasix off solid overseas form, but note Graham Motion just 3-for-42 in Tampa turf MSW races in Januarys past. #10 Pop Art was a clear-cut second last out with a big gap to the rest in a similar Tampa spot, though this field projects to be a bit tougher. $750K purchase needs to break this maiden condition to up her broodmare stock potentially.

Race of the Week: Sunshine F&M Turf at Gulfstream | Sat 1/10

The Lead:
Florida-breds take center stage Saturday at Gulfstream Park for the Sunshine Filly & Mare Turf. The 1-mile grass test goes as Race 11 and immediately follows the co-featured Sunshine Classic. The 11-runner lineup in this one makes it the more attractive betting proposition, while both races will be part of the Sunset Pick 6 wager with sister track Santa Anita. Also note both races will be part of the Xpressbet Beat the Host handicapping contest this week, which features racing analyst Millie Ball as the public's target to beat.

Horseplayers at Xpressbet and 1/ST BET be sure to opt in and take part in the Pegasus World Cup Bankroll Builder promotion. Bet $25 on Gulfstream Park's Saturday card and get a $5 wagering credit to be deposited prior to the huge PWC card later this month.

Field Depth:
Open-company stakes winners GREAT VALENZUELA and SPIRITED BOSS are joined by defending Sunshine Filly & Mare Turf winner ASHIMA at the head of the class.

Pace:
Expect a quick tempo in this turf mile, particularly with some of the projected speed drawn in the outside post positions and hustled early to gain position into the clubhouse turn. A front-running winner will have earned this victory if successful.

Our Eyes:
Here are my horse-by-horse notes.

#1-LADY CHA CHA: Late runner has some consistency in cashing minor checks, but has lost 11 in a row. Ground-saving trip and contested pace are in her favor under Miguel Vasquez. Late BRIS Pace Figures 90-91 are tops in this field in route races.

#2-LUZ DE LA LUNA: Synthetics sprinter is 0-9 on turf and a question mark at the distance. Open company allowance sort at Woodbine taken for $50,000 optional claiming in November by a Marty Drexler barn that’s had her a few times in the past, a good sign at least. First start outside Woodbine in 36 tries.

#3-MISS MARY NELL: Inside speed expected from filly who made the pace in the Tropical Park Oaks from a tough post 11 of 12 last out. She backed up late at 63-1 odds in that one after a 5-month hiatus. Should be more fit, but pace task here looks heated. Stakes-placed over this turf course last summer in open company for Carlos David.

#4-VOLATILED: Lots of questions to be answered by this dirt sprinter from the surface to the 2-turn trip. This also marks her first attempt in the elder stakes ranks after facing age-restricted foes the past 2 seasons. Five-time runner-up in 9 starts has just a maiden score to her record but has hit the board in 5 straight for Fernando Abreu.

#5-SAPPHIRE GIRL: Least-experienced member of the cast makes just her fourth lifetime start, breaking her maiden Oct. 26 at this turf mile trip and not seen since. Saffie Joseph Jr. trainee looks to have missed a workout in late December, so we’ll see where she is on fitness and how she stacks up with elder stakes foes. Pass for now.

#6-SPIRITED BOSS: Consistent winner has scored 4 times in 7 starts for Jose D’Angelo and won the Sanibel Island Stakes over this course and similar trip in open company. Ability to stalk midpack will be effective in this race with plenty of pace. Didn’t need pace help in winning her Tampa comeback that should set her up well under Irad Ortiz Jr. Big player.

#7-ASHIMA: Defending champ in the Sunshine Filly & Mare Turf has been popular at the windows, favored in 6 of her last 7 starts (winning 4 of those). Hard to knock this last-out Claiming Crown winner, but note Irad Ortiz Jr. hops off that winning mount to take Spirited Boss on Saturday. Can show speed, but versatile running style could be very helpful in that looks to be a contested pace. Javier Castellano takes the mount for Salvatore Santoro.

#8-SOUPER WILLIWAW: Even fifth of 12 in the Tropical Park Oaks last out after back-to-back wins in at Monmouth and Laurel in the maiden and allowance ranks. Mike Trombetta trainee fits well at this trip and probably will be closer to the pace than last out after a bumpy start. Not without a case going into state-bred ranks.

#9-RUGELACH: Wide post draws have plagued this early pace player and poor luck at the the draw continues. Southern California transplant exits a good second in a Tampa Bay Downs turf mile allowance for new trainer Sam Wilensky. Solid marks at the mile trip (7: 3-2-1) and this can be a specialist’s turf distance. Consider, but pace and post work against her chance of landing top prize.

#10-SOUPER ZONDA: White-hot trainer Mark Casse tabs John Velazquez for the first time aboard this Curlin filly who was fourth at 58-1 in the Tropical Park Oaks last time. She has a win over the course and a turf mile win at Woodbine, but it’s a very light and inconsistent resume overall. Hard to dismiss Casse the way he’s horses are firing right now, but another pace presser with a tough post to overcome.

#11-GREAT VENEZUELA: Turf sprinter expected to show early heat from the widest draw in hopes of improving on last year’s second-place finish in the Sunshine Filly & Mare Turf as the favorite. Trainer Victor Barboza turns to Tyler Gaffalione for the first time. Her 16: 9-4-2 record shines, but while she’s run well in 5 tries over this turf course, has only 1 win to show for it. Consistency is to be applauded and an obvious contender.

Most Likely Exotics Contender:
SPIRITED BOSS is 7-for-7 in the trifecta lifetime, is drawn well enough and gets a great pace set-up.

Best Longshot Contender:
LADY CHA CHA should be running on late in a race with plenty of early pace.

Santa Anita Park - Race #3

#1 Himika	She has some tables to turn here and might need a couple things to go her way to land this, but I think she might find a really nice trip from the fence while getting in the mix early in a race without a ton of super-serious early burn.
#5 Explora	She has not done much wrong and ran well behind a nice winner at the Breeders' Cup, and she has the pace to stay up on the splits the whole way at this trip.
#4 Revera	She's another who should be in the mix early on, and she has traded decision with the top choice in recent starts. One of the ones in a fun group.
Race Summary	Himika has some midrange price appeal here and might be in the frame with her best -- she makes as much sense here as anyone if Explora can get beat.

Santa Anita Park - Race #4

#3 Bring Om the Bacon	Looking to a couple of fresh faces in this one, and I think this guy might offer an interesting price on the board. Take a look at him on the track ahead of this, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him run in the frame at a price today.
#9 Dark Omen	He's another fresh face with a sprinty pedigree, and he has been collecting bullet works over the last month in advance of this. Check him out, but he seems ready to at least play a part early here.
#8 Sirnami	Think he's the most interesting of those with experience, as he has some reasonable upside in the second career start and might find a nice spying spot with these.
Race Summary	Bring Om the Bacon and Dark Omen both go first time out with fun turf sprint pedigrees, but the former should be a much better price with a less flashy worktab leading into this.

Santa Anita Park - Race #10

#2 King of Dragons	Really liked the comeback effort and think that might set him up for something better while making his second start of the winter. Finisher's better stuff would do.
#4 Cali Cat	I don't trust him a whole lot at what might not be a very appealing price, but he does have a decent class edge on most of these and makes some sense if he brings his baseline try.
#12 Warm Sun And Brew	Like the way he stretched out to score at second asking, and that run suggests he has enough early zip to try to find an OK spot into the first turn from this high draw. Still has upside.
Race Summary	King of Dragons seems competitive here if he can move forward off the last one, and there should be enough pace in here to give him a fair chance from off the speed.

3rd race – (5) She’s a Gamer returns to dirt and should respond with a big effort. (6) Boombox Betty flopped last time but can rebound here after a freshening. (1) Sunna has speed from the rail and could hang around to the end. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-5-6.

5th race – (6) Message of Hope has keen early speed and may not look back. (7) Try to Make Cents has a nice late kick and should be a main threat. (3) Power From Above comes off a maiden win and should be a factor here. (5) Il Alchemysta and can make his presence felt here. Betting strategy: 6 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-5-6-7.

7th race – (2) Surf’s Up was third last time and could be tough to beat off the David claim. (4) Split Strike ships in from Canada off a layoff and may be the key threat. (1) Seaver will be helped by a ground-saving trip. (7) Blazing Bucchero might wake up here. Betting strategy: 2 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-4-7.

9th race – (5) Breezero should work out a winning trip in this field. (6) Le Amazonia figures to be the one to fear. (8) Vindicate Cha Cha has high speed and could hang around until the end. (7) Mz Big Bucks can be a threat despite the layoff. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 5-6-7-8.

2^nd race [OC 150k/N1X, 6F] – (4) Interstatelovesong was an open-length winner in her second start as an odds-on favorite in December and now gets Lasix in her first start as a 3-year-old. (3) For the Ladies is also from the barn of Tom Morley as is the top choice and won her second race by more than seven lengths at short odds. (5) Ohoopee was claimed by Linda Rice from a win in a $50,000 claiming race at Churchill Downs as a heavy favorite. (2) Caradise shows up in here for the big claiming option following a third in a starter allowance after a three month layoff.

3^rd race [Clm 16000, 1 1/8 mi] – (6) Best Bet has four top three finishes in a row in races ranging from $12,500 to $16,000 and gets a favorable rider change. (1) Whiskey N Soda won in November following a 10 month layoff in a $17,500 claimer at the nine-furlong distance and then was overmatched in a starter allowance. (3) Hours in a Day was last seen in September winning for $17,500. (2) Quiet Wisdom was claimed from 3 out of his last four starts.

4^th race [NY, OC 80k/N1X, 6 ? F] – (3) Irish Fortune (A) was a debut winner by almost four lengths for a trainer that does not usually win with first-time starters. (5) Hot Currency was a maiden winner in November by more than six lengths and then was second in the NY Stallion Series Stakes after having the lead in the stretch. (6) Pinky Brier had two wins and a second by a neck in her last three races including a starter allowance win following a $50,000 maiden score. (1) Daniella Marie was third in that Stallion Series stakes after a nine length victory in a $75,000 maiden race.

9^th race [NY, Md Sp Wt, 6F] – (2) Boiling Point (B) lost all chance after stumbling badly at the start last time. (6) Hire the Hat gets blinkers on and first-time Lasix after running second in her second start last month. (10) Into Hijinks set the pace and finished second in her debut last month at Parx Racing at 12-1 in a large field. (11) Princess Jane will make the first start of her career as a filly who was well regarded as a possible 2-year-old runner at Saratoga and resumed breezing in November.

Best bets: Interstatelovesong (2^nd); Best Bet (3^rd). Best Value: Irish Fortune (4^th); Boiling Point (9^th).

Gary P. Palmisano Sr. Memorial Stakes | Purse $100,000 | Six Furlongs | Four Years Old and Upward

Top winning contenders are Bron and Brow (3), Geaux Sugar (6), Benoit (1)

Other contenders for second exactas: El Dinero (5)

Analysis and Contenders:

Bron and Brow (3) has run in 27 career dirt sprint races, finishing first or second 14 times (52%). One of his best races came in the 2023 Gary P. Palmisano Stakes, where he earned a career-best Equibase Speed Figure (101). He also won the edition of the same race in January 2024. He then won the Louisiana Bred Premier Sprint Stakes in February 2024. He lost 13 races before taking a 14-month layoff and returning to win in November 2025.Asmussen claimed Bron and Brow in January 2024, then lost him in a claim in May and reclaimed him in July 2024 after running once off the layoff. The Hall of Fame trainer believed this horse could return to his top form, which he demonstrated with the win in November. Bron and Brow then finished second in December. Both earned 96 figures, and I believe he can run much better than 15/1 starting odds and can win this race for the third time.

Geaux Sugar (6) has been the top Louisiana sprinter for the past two years, winning five of eight races and finishing second three times. One of those second-place finishes was in the 2025 running of this race. His best figures have been 104 and 100, with his recent best race being a win at the Louisiana Sprint in December. He is a tough horse and should race in first or second place, but his odds will likely be much lower than Bron and Brow.

Benoit (1) has also won or finished second in 50% of his races, with five wins and four second-place finishes. Recently, he has only raced twice, facing top Louisiana route winners like Touchuponstar. He took home the Star Guitar Stakes last March (2025) and then finished second in May before being sidelined for nine months. In his latest race last month, he finished fourth but may improve with his second race back after the layoff. Benoit previously won two sprints early in his career and finished second in another. He has a legitimate shot and 6/1 starting odds.

El Dinero (5) has finished ahead of Geaux Sugar in all six races they've competed in. He finished second twice and third once. I am only using El Dinero in second place in exactas.

Bets:

Wins: Bron and Brow (3) should be at fair odds of 3 to 1 or better.

Benoit (1) should also consider fair odds of 7 to 2 or better.

FETE - Gelding has shown some early speed. This shorter distance should be better for him. This jockey/trainer duo has been producing a very profitable ROI, right at +47. All systems look good for this gelding. Last prep, 2nd fastest of the day, shows he's fit and ready. Trainer, Cappellucci, has been deliberate with this gelding off the layoff. Look for a solid effort today. QUALITY STYLE - Jockey jumped on this colt's back for the 1st time on Dec 11th. Should be in touch with the horse even better this time. Hamilton's agent must enjoy anytime Pish gives them a mount; winning pct together is terrific. The 73 most recent race figure looks sound in black and white.
