    NBA All-Star Game:
    What bettors need to know

    Western Conference All-Stars
    at Eastern Conference All-Stars (-3.5, 283.5)
There are several new faces sprinkled among the rosters for the NBA All-Star Game. The starting lineups, however, are mostly stacked with returning superstars. Four-time All-Star Game MVP Kobe Bryant is making his 13th trip to the festivities in Orlando Sunday, where he will match up against Miami Heat teammates Dwyane Wade and LeBron James, who have combined for three All-Star MVPs.Bryant carried the Western Conference to a 148-143 victory with 37 points and 14 rebounds last season, earning MVP honors in his hometown of Los Angeles. Attempting to do the same in 2012 will be Dwight Howard, who is sure to be the focus of much of the hometown attention.

    THE WESTERN CONFERENCE:
The West features two pairs of teammates in the starting lineup, with Lakers’ Bryant and Andrew Bynum joined by Los Angeles Clippers’ Chris Paul and Blake Griffin. In an exhibition known for its lack of defense, fans can expect one or two highlights from the “Lob City” pair of Paul and Griffin. Oklahoma City’s Kevin Durant rounds out the starting five, with regulars like Dirk Nowitzki, Steve Nash and Tony Parker coming off the bench. First-timers include Bynum, Marc Gasol and LaMarcus Aldridge, while Russell Westbrook and Kevin Love will each be making their second trip to the ASG.
Thunder coach Scott Brooks will guide the team from the bench.

    THE EASTERN CONFERENCE:
Howard, who has yet to back off his trade request, could be playing one of his last games in front of the home crowd at Amway Center. Enjoying the festivities for the sixth time, Howard has averaged 14.2 points and 8.4 rebounds in his All-Star career.James has put up 24.4 points in his seven previous All-Star appearances, second only to Durant’s 24.5. Chicago’s Derrick Rose and New York’s Carmelo Anthony complete the starting five. Loul Deng, Roy Hibbert and Andre Iguodala will each be making their first trip, with Celtics teammates Paul Pierce and Rajon Rondo and New Jersey’s Deron Williams rounding out the squad.
The East will be coached by the Bulls’ Tom Thibodeau.

    BUZZER BEATERS:
    1. Pierce, who will be playing in his 10th All-Star Game, has never been voted a starter.
    2. The Conferences have traded victories in each of the last six seasons.
    3. The Eastern Conference holds a 36-24 lead in the all-time series.
    4. Over the last 10 All-Star Games, the East and West have combined for an average of 268.8 points per game since 2002.

    PREDICTION:
    East 130, West 125

      Game of the day:
      Wisconsin at Ohio State

      Wisconsin Badgers
at Ohio State Buckeyes (-9.5, 118.5)
If No. 9 Ohio State has designs on earning a share of a Big Ten regular season title, it will almost certainly need to begin its final three-game stretch with a win in its final home game over No. 15 Wisconsin – the conference’s most successful road team over the past 10 seasons. The Buckeyes, who have already secured a 58-52 road victory over the Badgers on Feb. 4, enter this contest with wins in 40 of their last 41 home games. The Badgers, who trail Ohio State and Michigan by one game and conference leader Michigan State by two games, are 5-3 in conference road games and 8-4 overall away from home.

      WISCONSIN (20-8, 9-5 Big Ten, 13-12 ATS):
Since coach Bo Ryan took over the program before the 2001-02 season, the Badgers have accumulated 47 road wins in conference play and 61 overall – both marks are the best in the Big Ten over that span. One problem area recently has been Wisconsin’s renowned defense, which has allowed two of its last three opponents to shoot 48 percent or better from the field after not allowing a single opponent to shoot that well over its first 25 games. However, the Badgers have been more efficient beyond the arc lately, hitting at least 37.5 percent of their 3-pointers in consecutive games for just the second time in conference play.

OHIO STATE (23-5, 11-4 Big Ten, 14-9 ATS):
The Buckeyes are in the top 10 in several NCAA statistical categories: Second in scoring margin (plus-17.9), fourth in turnover margin (plus-4.9) and eighth in scoring defense (57.1 points per game). Ohio State also allows its opponents just 0.86 points per possession – the best mark in the nation. In Ohio State’s earlier victory over Wisconsin, sophomore standout Jared Sullinger controlled the paint early and often – scoring 16 first-half points en route to posting one of his five double-doubles in Big Ten play.

      TIP-INS:
      1. The Badgers (51.7 points allowed per game and 27.9 percent 3-point shooting) are on pace to break their modern-day school records in scoring and 3-point field-goal percentage defense.
      2. William Buford needs just two 3-pointers to become the third Ohio State player ever to record 200 for his career.
      3. Jordan Taylor owns a career 3.06 assist-to-turnover ratio and will likely break the NCAA record held by ex-UTEP guard Julyan Stone (2.70 from 2008-11).

Ice picks: Sunday's Best NHL Bets

Vancouver Canucks at Dallas Stars (123, 5)

Something will have to give when Vancouver visits Dallas on Sunday. The Canucks, who lead the NHL with 86 points as of Saturday, have won two in a row and six of their last seven games. The Stars, currently in the eighth and final playoff slot in the Western Conference, are on a three-game winning streak.

Head-to-head, though, a huge edge goes to the Canucks. They have gotten the best of Dallas on six straight occasions (including four in 2010-11) and in nine of the last 10 meetings dating back to 2009. Vancouver outscored the Stars by an incredible 20-4 clip in four games last season.

The Canucks have another reason to be confident heading into Sunday's clash. Prior to Friday's 2-1 win over New Jersey, they stopped Detroit's 23-game home winning streak with a shootout victory on Thursday.

“Game 61, usually they don't mean that much,” Daniel Sedin told the Vancouver Sun after stunning the Red Wings. “This was a special game for us. During the game, you don't really think about [winning streaks] and those kind of things. But when it got to a shootout, then you realize you have a chance to do it.

"Most importantly, we played a good road game against the top team in this league. It was a gutsy performance by a lot of players.”

                  Pick: Canucks

Montreal Canadiens at Florida Panthers (-114, 5)

The Panthers are clinging to the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference as of Saturday, with 66 points. In order to hand onto it, though, they will have to start scoring goals.

Florida has lost four in a row as of Saturday afternoon and has been outscored 13-5 in that span. The team mustered only one goal in losses to Washington and Anaheim prior to the All-Star break and it lost 3-2 in a shootout to Minnesota on Thursday.

The Canadiens have been similarly woeful of late. Sitting in last place in the Eastern Conference, they are on a three-game losing streak and have been outscored 10-2 in that span. Montreal is coming off a 4-1 loss at Washington on Friday.

These two teams have faced each other twice this season, with Florida taking low-scoring affairs by one goal each time (2-1 and 3-2). None of their last nine meetings has gone over the total (the under is 6-0-3 in their last nine).

                  Pick: Under
