Hot lines: Saturday's best MLB bets

Los Angeles Angels at New York Yankees (-120, 9.5)

The New York Yankees’ offense looked pretty good heading into Friday’s matinee against the Angels, and that was before Alex Rodriguez got cooking.

After going just 4-for-23 in the first two series of the season, A-Rod swatted his 630th career homer and finished with three hits to pace the Yanks to a 5-0 victory. The dinger pulled Rodriguez into a tie with Ken Griffey Jr. for fifth place on the all-time list.

Rodriguez moved to the No. 3 hole in the lineup instead of his usual clean-up spot, swapping places with Robinson Cano.

“No matter where you hit, you have to just basically produce,” Rodriguez told reporters. “I know it does one thing; it presents a situation or a decision for the opposing manager each and every day. At some point, someone should get a pretty favorable matchup.”

With Hiroki Kuroda dealing, the Angels were held to only five hits Friday but should be able to get to Phil Hughes a bit.

              Pick: Over

Tampa Bay Rays at Boston Red Sox (-135, 9)

With the BoSox sliding into their home opener, Fenway Park’s 101st anniversary season, something had to give.

Josh Beckett bounced back from a dreadful start that saw him give up five homers, throwing eight strong innings while the Red Sox offense exploded in a 12-2 destruction of the Rays.

Kelly Shoppach had three hits, two RBIs, and scored three runs against his former team and Boston sent 14 batters to the plate in the eighth inning, when they pushed across eight runs.

“It was a very fortuitous game for the Red Sox, a lot of things fell in,” Rays manager Joe Maddon told reporters. “It was just one of those days. It was the Red Sox’s day.”

With Clay Buchholz and Jeremy Hellickson sharing the hill Saturday afternoon, we could see some more runs on the board. Buchholz was drilled in his first start of the year and the over has cashed in 11 of Hellickson’s last 16 road starts.

              Pick: Over

Ice picks: Saturday's best NHL bets

Washington Capitals at Boston Bruins (-180, 5) odds provided by logans

The Boston Bruins look to take a 2-0 series lead and sweep the opening games of the series at TD Garden on Saturday afternoon.

Chris Kelly scored the lone goal at 1:18 of overtime and Tim Thomas posted his sixth career playoff shutout to lift Boston to a 1-0 victory on Thursday. Washington played a strong defensive game, but failed to mount any offense in the first two periods, only putting seven shots on goal.

Goaltending was a huge area of concern for the Capitals coming into the postseason because of injuries to Michal Neurvirth (lower body) and Tomas Vokoun (groin). Braden Holtby rose to the occasion, stopping 29 of the 30 shots he faced in Game 1.

The netminder has allowed only eight goals in his past six outings for the Capitals, including four starts where he has conceded one goal or less.

Part of the Bruins' defensive plan was to limit forward Alex Ovechkin's chances in the series. Ovechkin was held to just one shot while mostly matched up against Boston defenseman Zdeno Chara in Game 1.

Goals could be hard to come by again in Game 2.

                Pick: Under

Ottawa Senators at New York Rangers (-165, 5) odds provided by logans

After missing the playoffs last season with a broken ankle, New York Rangers captain Ryan Callahan made his presence felt during Thursday's 4-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators.

Callahan scored his team's first goal and unleashed a game-high seven hits as the top-seeded Rangers claimed the early edge in the Eastern Conference quarterfinal series. The eighth-seeded Senators will look to respond on Saturday if they hope to return to Canada's capital with a split in the series.

While Callahan was solid, Lundqvist bordered on sensational. The likely Vezina Trophy candidate turned aside 30 shots before yielding two late third-period goals. With his 16th postseason triumph, Lundqvist pulled even with John Davidson for fourth place in the Rangers' all-time playoff wins list.

Brian Boyle has found his scoring touch, collecting his fourth goal in his last five games. Boyle had 11 tallies in the regular season.

Ottawa will be tighter in Game 2 but will still have a tough time solving Lundqvist.

                Pick: Under

Okay, so even I didn’t expect to be up over 700% (734% to be exact) when I started making picks. Currently, I’ve picked 6 in a row correctly and 8 of my last 9. Overall, our net profit is up to 3,670 units with a picks record of 52-27. Considering I only pick on value that returns better than even money, I dare you to find a better football handicapper this season. If you do, then, I’m happy for you, but I haven’t seen anyone who can provide picks at the level I’ve been operating at.

                  1. Blackburn Rovers v Swansea City:Blackburn Rovers +0.5 at 1.962

Swansea don’t have much to play for and have lost 4 in a row by rather convincing margins. Still, Swansea are 10 points safe at the moment, while Rovers are 3 points from safety. Blackburn have been playing well recently and were unfortunate not to get a point against Liverpool. Rovers were also better than the 2-0 loss they suffered to United, so even money is on offer for a relegation threatened side playing against an out of form team with nothing to play for.

                  2. Sevilla v Getafe:Sevilla 2.740

Sevilla have won 4 of their last 5 matches and have looked a good side recently. Their only loss during the last 5 matches was away to Athletic Bilbao, a 1-0 result. Getafe are a strong side at home, but we gp to the computer on this pick. The computer has Sevilla at 50% to win the match, whereas oddsmakers currently give Sevilla a 36% chance of winning. There’s value here and these odds are worth the play.

Pick 'n' roll: Saturday's Best NBA Bets

Oddsmakers have yet to set a line for the Jazz-Grizzlies matchup. Pick should be considered an early lean.

Boston Celtics at New Jersey Nets (7, 184.5)

The aging Boston Celtics are getting their toughest test of the compacted lockout schedule with three games in three days.

After mailing in the first night at Toronto, the Celtics will be looking to rediscover their sense of urgency at the New Jersey Nets. Boston knocked off four straight playoff teams before shooting 37.5 percent against the Raptors. The Nets did the Celtics a solid by taking out the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday.

Boston had everyone anointing it as a title contender after rolling through the Indiana Pacers, 76ers, Miami Heat and Atlanta Hawks. The Celtics were within two games of the Pacers for the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference entering Friday but fell three games back with an uncharacteristically poor performance at Toronto.

Boston’s big Achilles heel is rebounding, and the Raptors exposed that by crashing the boards. The highlight lately has been Rajon Rondo, who extended his streak of double-digit assist games to 20 with 12 on Friday.

                    Pick: Under

Utah Jazz at Memphis Grizzlies (N/A)

The Memphis Grizzlies are trying to catch the Los Angeles Clippers for the fourth seed in the Western Conference, but they also have to be wary of a number of pursuers within striking distance of the No. 5 slot.

The Utah Jazz are on the outside of the playoff picture, sitting 1.5 games out of the final playoff spot as they prepare to visit the Grizzlies on Saturday night.

Memphis’ four-game winning streak was snapped at San Antonio on Thursday.

Memphis had held 11 consecutive opponents under 100 points until Thursday’s 107-97 loss to the Spurs. Zach Randolph had his fourth double-double in five games and is averaging 13.2 points and 11.4 rebounds during that stretch. After he was forced to sit out 2.5 months with a knee injury, Randolph is still not ready to rejoin the starting unit.

''Zach can come in and score anytime,” Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins said. “He's getting his double-doubles, so what else is there?''

                    Pick: Grizzlies

                      Key Stat

6 – The Ottawa Senators have scored just six times over their last four games – all losses. During the regular season, the Senators owned the fourth-best offense in the NHL, averaging three goals per game.

                      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Gerald Wallace, New Jersey Nets – The Nets ruled Wallace out of Friday’s game early as the 6-foot-7 forward deals with a hamstring issue and said he would be questionable for Saturday’s contest against the Boston Celtics. Wallace is averaging 13.6 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.

                      Game of the day

Phoenix Suns at San Antonio Spurs (-9, 208.5)

                      Notable quotable

"As a baseball player, going there to work, it's a dump. I mean, it's old. It does have a great feel and nostalgia, but at the end of the day, I'd rather be at a good facility where I can get my work in. A place where I can go hit in the cage, where I have space and it's a little more comfortable to come to work. You're packed in like sardines there. It's hard to get your work in. ... You have to go to their weight room if you want to lift. From a fan's perspective, it's probably pretty cool to go see a game at a historic park. But from a player's point of view, it's not a place where you want to go to work." – Tampa Bay Rays DH Luke Scott telling MLB.com about Fenway Park. The Rays had won five of their last six games at Fenway before getting hammered 12-2 on Friday.

                      Notes and Tips

The Phoenix Coyotes overcame the loss of 35-goal scorer Radim Vrbata to earn a Game 1 win over Chicago, but his status for Game 2 is questionable. He has been listed as day-to-day with the dreaded upper-body injury after playing just 30 seconds in the first game of the series. Reports out of Phoenix indicate he did work out with the team Friday.

Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost is trying to be patient with closer Jonathan Broxton, who blew his first save of the year Wednesday. It was pretty ugly. Broxton came on in the 12th with a 4-3 lead over Oakland only to hit a pair of batters, issue two walks, pick up an error, and allow two runs in the 5-4 loss. “I talked to Broxton today, and he just lost command of his fastball,” Yost said. “But he’s a two-time All-Star, and he has really rebounded nicely from this arm surgery. He’s got his velocity back up to 97, 98, with an 86-, 87-mph slider, which is a killer, hard slider.”

Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard was diagnosed by a doctor in Los Angeles with a herniated disc in his lower back, a team spokesman said Friday. Howard flew out earlier Friday to receive a second opinion from Dr. Robert Watkins. His initial diagnosis was back spasms. Howard is expected to fly back to Orlando where he will undergo treatment on Saturday. There is no timetable for his return. Howard is averaging 20.6 points and 14.5 rebounds in 54 games this season.
