                        OTTAWA +100 over N.Y. Rangers

The Senators continue to be the least respected team in the playoffs. Everyone keeps suggesting that they’re “not for real” and that’s simply not true. They were the better team in game one in New York and they were rewarded for being the better team in game two. They’re quicker than the Rangers, they have more balance and there is a quiet air of confidence about them. The Rangers are getting nasty, much like the Penguins. When a big favorite is getting outplayed, they get frustrated and off of their game. The Rangers had a good season but this is a new season and everyone starts from zot. What’s really interesting is the blocked shots category. The top three teams in the league in blocked shots were the Islanders, Minnesota and Montreal. What that trio has in common is that they all missed the playoffs and Montreal and the Islanders finished last and second last in the Eastern Conference. Minnesota wasn’t much better. The New York Rangers were fourth in the NHL in blocked shots. Instead of being a positive statistic, it could be more of a telling one. It tells us that the Rangers need to block a lot of shots because the opposition is in their end too often, loading up for a quality opportunities. It’s not a strong statistic in the Rangers favor. Henrik Lundqvist has been fantastic but not even he prevented the Sens from coming home tied 1-1. Remember, the Sens beat this team three out of four times during the regular season and there is nothing in the first two games that suggests they can’t beat them again. Play: Ottawa in the updated series price +159 (Risking 1 unit). Play: Ottawa in game 3 +100 (Risking 2 units).

San Diego +121 over COLORADO (1st 5 innings)

We put heavy influence on the starters here and therefore we are going to play this one in the first five innings and leave the erratic bullpens out of it. Jeremy Guthrie makes his third start of the year and he enters this one with a 1-0 mark. From there it gets ugly. In 10 innings, Guthrie has surrendered four bombs, 13 hits, and nine runs. He’s struck out two batters while walking five and his 1.74 WHIP is alarming. It’s only been two games but don’t expect Guthrie’s numbers to improve at Coors. At age 33, his best years are behind him and he was never anything more than a durable, average pitcher. Cory Luebke has gotten off to a rough start too but he did prove to be SD's best pitcher in 2011 and unlike Guthrie, he has the skills to succeed at this level. Luebke has a consistently high strikeout rate and has already struck out 11 in 10 frames this year. He’s also a southpaw and the Rockies were shutout at home by lefty Barry Zito while hitting just .220 on the year against lefties. Lubeke has a much better chance than Guthrie of pitching deeper into this game and that’s the way we’ll play it. Play: San Diego +118 (Risking 2 units).

                          Baltimore +114 over CHICAGO

The Orioles arrive with a 5-4 record after taking two out of three in Toronto on the weekend. Jake Arietta has had two nice games to start the year. He threw a two hit, seven inning shutout against the Twins and followed that up with a 6.2 inning start against the Yankees in which he allowed just five hits. That’s just seven hits in 13.2 innings for a BAA of .149 for Arietta. He’s showing better command, better strikeout rate and could be one the Orioles young starters coming of age. He should have an edge over Phillip Humber, who makes his first start of the year. You really never know what you’re going to get out of each start because pitchers, like horses, don’t always run to form. This is especially true in a pitcher’s first game of the season. Humber went 9-9 with the White Sox a year ago, sporting a 3.75 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP. Nice numbers but he’s been around for six years and was let go by the Mets, Twins and Royals before coming to Chicago. Humber’s first scheduled start was rained out but instead of pushing him back a day, the manager skipped him altogether and that’s not exactly a ringing endorsement. Humber is likely in for a regression as oppose to a repeat of his 2011 numbers. Play: Baltimore +114 (Risking 2 units).
