              Heat-Celtics Outlook
              By Kevin Rogers

No. 2 Miami Heat vs. No. 5 Boston Celtics

Series Price: Miami -500, Boston +400

Series Format: Miami, 2-2-1-1-1 (All games start at 8:30 PM EST on ESPN)

              Game 1 - Monday, May 28
              Game 2 - Wednesday, May 30
              Game 3 - Friday, June 1
              Game 4 - Sunday, June 3
              Game 5* - Tuesday, June 5
              Game 6* - Thursday, June 7
              Game 7* - Saturday, June 9

Skinny: The Heat and Celtics are no strangers to each other in the postseason. Boston eliminated Miami in five games two years ago in the opening round, while the Heat returned the favor in the conference semifinals last May in five games. This time around, the two rivals meet for the right to advance to the NBA Finals.

Miami has taken the road many expected by advancing past New York in five games and Indiana in six games. Beating the Pacers was no easy task in the second round as power forward Chris Bosh missed the final five contests with an abdominal injury suffered in the first half of the series opener. The Heat managed to overcome a 2-1 deficit by winning the final three games, including two great performances by LeBron James (40 points and 18 rebounds in Game 4) and Dwyane Wade (41 points and 10 rebounds in Game 6). Bosh's availability is in question for this series, but the aging Celtics have their injury concern as well.

Past the big four of Rajon Rondo, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, and Kevin Garnett, one of Boston's most valuable pieces in the playoffs was Avery Bradley. The ex-Texas Longhorn guard turned into the defensive stopped for the Celtics throughout the final two months of the season, but injured his left shoulder for a second time in the playoffs in Game 2 against the 76ers. In spite of Bradley's absence, Boston outlasted Philadelphia in seven games of the conference semifinals, as no team won consecutive times in the entire series.

Head-to-Head Matchups: Even though the Heat eliminated the Celtics last postseason in five games, Boston pulled off retribution by beating Miami three of four times in this lockout-shortened campaign. The first meeting between these rivals came back in late December, the second game for each squad of the season. The Heat held off the Celtics, 115-107, but Boston cashed as 9 ½-road underdogs to drop to 0-2 overall on the season. Pierce sat out for Boston with a bruised right heel, as the Heat lit up the C's for 69 points in the opening half. The key off the Miami bench turned out to be Norris Cole, as the rookie from Cleveland State scored a career-high 20 points, while Wade and James combined to score 50 points.

The Celtics would take over the remainder of the season series as Boston won each of the final three meetings, all in the month of April. Boston made Miami look like fools on April 1 at TD Garden with a convincing 91-72 beatdown of the Heat as four-point home 'dogs. The Heat was limited to just 28 second-half points, as Boston's 31-12 third-quarter advantage put the game never in doubt. Rondo racked up another triple-double with 16 points, 11 boards, and 14 assists, while Boston's defense clamped down by holding Miami to 35% shooting from the floor.

Boston put together its most impressive shooting performance of the season in South Florida by knocking down 61% of its field-goal attempts in a 115-107 triumph on April 10. The C's won outright as 7 ½-point underdogs, while the two teams eclipsed the 'over' for the fifth straight meeting at the American Airlines Arena. Boston knocked down nine treys in 14 tries, including a trio of three-pointers from Pierce, who scored a team-high 27 points.

The last meeting of the season didn't prove much on either side as James, Wade, and Bosh sat out for the Heat in a 78-66 defeat at TD Garden on April 24. The Celtics cashed as seven-point favorites even though Garnett, Rondo, and Allen all rested. Only four players scored in double-figures combined, but seven Celtics tallied at least seven points in the victory.

Betting Notes: The Heat is riding a red-hot 9-2 SU/ATS stretch as a home favorite the last 11 games, while the 'under' is 10-4 the previous 14 contests at the AAA. Since mid-February, Miami owns a profitable 13-9 ATS record in the road 'chalk' role, while holding eight straight opponents to below 100 points on the highway.

Boston didn't respond well in the role off an away underdog by winning just eight of 25 times, while posting a 13-12 ATS ledger. However, the Celtics put together a 12-5 ATS record as a road 'dog with rest, which will be the case in this series. The C's were a home 'dog seven times in the regular season, as the 'under' cashed five times, while Boston finished 4-0-1 ATS in its final five games when getting points at TD Garden.

Series Outlook: The Celtics found a way to advance to the conference finals for the third time in six seasons, but their lack of depth will likely be their biggest enemy. Miami is rested heading into the opener after last playing on Thursday night, while the team hopes to get Bosh back sometime in this series. James and Wade are playing the best basketball of their careers, as the Heat will advance to the Finals in six games.

Celtics at Heat: What Bettors Need to Know

Boston Celtics at Miami Heat (-8, 180)

THE STORY: The Miami Heat are looking to return to the NBA Finals for the second straight season against a Boston Celtics roster dealing with a short turnaround. The Celtics get just one day of rest before opening the Eastern Conference finals in Miami n Monday. The Heat completed a six-game series win over the Indiana Pacers on Thursday while Boston dispatched of the Philadelphia 76ers in Saturday’s Game 7. The Celtics could have tired legs in the opener while Miami will be without injured Chris Bosh.

ABOUT THE CELTICS: Point guard Rajon Rondo posted his ninth career playoff triple-double with 18 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in Boston’s 85-75 series-clinching win against the 76ers. He scored 11 of his points in the final four minutes after forward Paul Pierce fouled out. Rondo averaged 18.7 points, 7.7 rebounds and 13.7 assists against the Heat in the regular season but didn’t record a single steal. “We feel we can beat Miami,” Rondo said. “We got to this point – there’s no doubt in my mind we can. We’ve got to go down there and take care of business.” Forward Kevin Garnett has played superb and has nine double-doubles in the postseason.

ABOUT THE HEAT: Bosh strained a lower abdominal muscle in the opening game of the Indiana series on May 13 and it remains unclear when he will return. Bosh has begun light conditioning work but isn’t considered close to hitting the court. “It’s my responsibility right now to prepare this team without him,” Miami coach Erik Spoelstra said. “If and when it gets to a point where he starts to emerge into the picture, we would gladly deal with that because we’re a more dangerous offensive team and a more dangerous defensive team when he’s in the mix.” Guard Dwyane Wade averaged 33 points and forward LeBron James averaged 32.7 points over the final three games of the Pacers series.

                TRENDS:

*Celtics are 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.
*Home team is 11-4 ATS in the last 15 meetings.
*Over is 16-5 in the last 21 meetings in Miami.
*Over is 4-0 in Celtics' last four games as an underdog of 5.0-10.5 points.

                BUZZER BEATERS:

                1. Boston won three of the four regular-season meetings and beat Miami three times in April. The Heat notched a home win over the Celtics in December.

                2. This is the third straight season in which the two teams have met in the playoffs. Miami eliminated Boston in five games in last season’s second round and the Celtics defeated the Heat in five games in the first round in 2010.

                3. James (10) and Wade (eight) have combined for 18 20-point outings in the postseason.

French Open odds: Day 2 preview and picks

Charles Bricker went 1-1 with his picks on Day 1, for -0.10 units.

A tough opening day for me. Missed an upset in the Sijsling-Muller match when Gilles Muller came back to win an 8-6 fifth set.

On the docket for Day 2:

No. 50 Santiago Giraldo (-203) vs. No. 52 Alejandro Falla (+182)

How often do you see a couple of Colombians square off in a Slam? Not these two, who have never played in an ATP main draw. While Falla has four more years of experience, Giraldo is having the better year. Nothing spectacular, but he does have a win over Kei Nishikori and his last four losses have all been vs. upper-level players. Falla is only 6-12 for the year, but went three sets on clay with Fernando Verdasco at Madrid.

                  Pick: Giraldo

No. 81 Filippo Volandri (+201) vs. No. 112 Tommy Haas (-225)

A couple of 30-somethings who both can still play on clay. Volandri made the final of an ATP 250 in February, but hasn't won two in a row since. However, anyone playing Haas knows there's a significant chance in a best-of-five that Tommy, who might hold a record for tennis surgeries, could break down anytime. Tommy's win over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at Munich is significant, but his shelf life is about up. That blown two-set lead over Roger Federer at the 2009 French is long passed.

                  Pick: Haas.

No. 77 Xavier Malisse (+137) vs. No. 141 Brian Baker (-152)

Malisse, 31, is more or less winding down his career. He's been one of the under-appreciated athletes in tennis since his teenaged debut, but he's facing an inspired 27-year-old American who was essentially out of the game for seven years before coming back last July after three hip surgeries. Last week he took down No. 13 Gael Monfils on the way to the final at Nice, where he lost to Nicolas Almagro.

                  Pick: Baker

No. 38 Ekaterina Makarova (-256) vs. No. 70 Sloane Stephens (+228)

Stephens, 19, is at a career-best ranking after taking out No. 17 Maria Kirilenko (on a third-set injury retirement) and reaching the semis at Strasbourg last week. So she brings momentum into the French against one of the most unpredictable players in the women's game. Makarova is a fragile 14-7 and 21 matches this year isn't many. She hasn't been too stunning since reaching the quarters at the Aussie Open with wins over Vera Zvonareva and a not fully-fit Serena Williams.

                  Pick: Makarova

Rounding the bases: This week's best MLB bets
                    By BILL MCBRIDE

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in Major League Baseball (All records and statistics through Saturday):

                    HOT TEAM: Los Angeles Angels

                    THIS SEASON: 23-25
                    LAST WEEK: 5-2
THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: At the Mets for three, home to the Marlins for three.

THE SKINNY: The Halos are starting to play the heavenly ball we all expected from them following a spending spree that would have made Nicolas Cage blush.

Albert Pujols was riding a six-game hit streak with home runs in three straight games until going hitless Sunday. The big arms in the pitching staff continue to deliver but now that the bats are coming alive the wins are coming.

A six-game win streak is a nice start, but don’t forget the success has come at the expense of the Seattle Mariners and Oakland A’s. Not exactly world beaters.

                    COLD TEAM: Chicago Cubs

                    THIS SEASON: 15-31
                    LAST WEEK: 0-6
THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: Home to the Padres for three, at the Giants for four.

THE SKINNY: We try to take the variety route here in Rounding the Bases, but when you’ve lost 11 in a row headed into Sunday’s action, we have no choice but to turn to a repeat offender.

The Cubs have been dreadful in May, and entered the series finale against Pittsburgh with a 7-16 record. And in the four losses leading into Sunday’s game, Chicago scored two runs or less.

Perhaps a three-game set against San Diego at Wrigley Field will jumpstart the offense. But then again, the Cubs are just 9-15 at home this season, so maybe the confines aren’t so friendly there, after all.

They were 27th in the league in home runs (32), and 25th in slugging percentage (.373). That’s not going to get it done. Now, clearly, as this goes on, surely you’re going to have to pay more to fade them. But with losses piling up at that clip, you probably can’t ignore them much longer.

                    OVER TEAM: Minnesota Twins

                    O/U THIS SEASON: 23-20-3
                    O/U LAST WEEK: 5-1
THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: Home to the Athletics for three, at the Indians for three.

THE SKINNY: The Twins have been another good fade team so far, but the bats have come alive recently. While that hasn’t been enough to pull out more victories, if nothing else, it has led to some overs, and totals players should now be on alert.
The Twins were 7-2-1 over in their previous 10 games leading into Sunday’s series finale against Detroit, and also had posted three in a row. In those three, they scored 17 runs, and when you have a bad pitching staff, that kind of run total is going to get you over the total, folks.

In three games last week alone, Minnesota’s arms allowed 10 or more runs, and through Saturday’s action, the Twins were dead last in the majors in ERA (5.50).

                    UNDER TEAM: Pittsburgh Pirates

                    O/U THIS SEASON: 12-31-3
                    O/U LAST WEEK: 1-5
THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: Home to the Reds for three, at the Brewers for three.

THE SKINNY: Like the Cubs, we simply cannot pass on a good thing here. And with just a dozen overs through May 26, the Pirates are more than just a good thing in under-land. With a .216 team batting average, Pittsburgh ended Saturday’s action dead last in the National League and second worst in the majors next to Oakland.

But wait, there’s more. A .610 team OPS was 30th overall, and in the four games headed into Sunday’s series finale against the Cubs, Pittsburgh scored three runs or less in all of them.

Listen, outfielder Andrew McCutchen -- .338 average, seven homers, 24 RBIs, 25 runs and eight steals -- is a ball player, and appears worthy of the contract he received in the offseason. But he's alone in that lineup. And when you combine that with a pitching staff that was third in the majors in ERA (3.23) and eighth in WHIP (1.25), those unders will likely continue to pile up.

Monday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers

                      Streaking

Cole Hamels, Philadelphia Phillies (7-1, 2.17 ERA)

The 28-year-old lefty is tied for the MLB lead in victories. He’s gone at least seven innings in four straight starts and has an eye-popping strikeout-to-walk ratio of 66:13. Batters are hitting .220 against Hamels. However, he’s just 4-10 with a 4.33 ERA in 18 career starts against the Mets.

Jered Weaver, Los Angeles Angels (6-1, 2.61 ERA)

The 29-year-old right-hander has allowed three runs over his last two starts, covering 15 innings. Batters are hitting .190 against him, and he’s tied for second in the majors with a WHIP of 0.90. In nine career starts against the Yankees, Weaver is 5-2 with a 4.79 ERA.

                      Slumping

Juan Nicasio, Colorado Rockies (2-2, 4.83 ERA)

The 25-year-old right-hander was hammered by the Marlins last time out, giving up nine hits and six runs (five earned) in five innings. He has gone more than five innings only once in his last four starts. Nicasio’s WHIP is an unsightly 1.57, and batters are hitting .303 against him.

Drew Hutchison, Toronto Blue Jays (3-2, 5.73 ERA)

The 21-year-old right-hander was lit up in Tampa Bay last time out, serving up two homers and six earned runs over four innings. He’s given up at least four earned runs in four of his seven starts. Hutchison faces the powerful Orioles, who lead the majors in home runs, on Monday.

Monday's betting tips: Brew Crew blue behind Marcum

                        Weather to watch

San Diego Padres at Chicago Cubs – A 24-mph wind will be blowing out to dead center for this afternoon tilt. Temperatures will be in the high 80s, with a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms.

                        Who’s hot

MLB: Texas is 13-3 in Matt Harrison’s last 16 starts vs. losing teams.

MLB: The over is 9-4 in San Diego’s last 13 games vs. a lefty starter.

NBA: Boston is 4-0 ATS in its last four meetings with Miami.

                        Who’s not

MLB: The Brewers are 0-6 in Shaun Marcum’s last six starts vs. winning teams.

MLB: Cleveland is 2-5 in Josh Tomlin’s last seven home starts.

NBA: The under is 5-16 in the last 21 Celtics-Heat games in Miami.

                        Key stat

9 – That’s the average number of turnovers the Celtics committed in their three wins over Miami this season, compared to 20 turnovers in the lone loss. Point guard Rajon Rondo is the key to Boston’s chances. He averaged 18.7 points, 13.7 assists and 7.7 rebounds against the Heat. But in that lone loss, Rondo had seven of Boston’s 20 giveaways.

                        Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

The light-hitting Padres, who were shut out Saturday and Sunday, could get a huge boost Monday with the possible activation from the DL of slugging OF Carlos Quentin, who is coming back from knee surgery. The 29-year-old went 4-for-7 with a homer and three RBIs in two rehab games at High-A Lake Elsinore. Last year, Quentin had 24 homers and 77 RBIs while playing for the White Sox. He hit 107 homers from 2008-11.

                        Game of the day

Boston Celtics at Miami Heat (-8, 180)

                        Notable quotable

"They're not going to ever quit. Last year, we beat them in five but it was a nine-game series, it felt like.'' -- Miami guard Dwyane Wade, on facing the Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals. Game 1 is Monday night in Miami.

                        Notes and tips

Oklahoma City's backdoor cover Sunday night, on a meaningless James Harden 3-pointer at the buzzer, dropped favorites to 12-3 ATS in the last 15 NBA playoff games. Monday night, the Heat is favored by 8 in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals.

Devils forward Ilya Kovalchuk leads the NHL in playoff points with 18, and he’ll be counted on for a lot more when New Jersey faces Los Angeles in the Cup finals starting Wednesday. Kovalchuk is obviously over a lower back injury that caused him to miss Game 2 of the second-round series with Philly. "I missed that game against Philly and the doctors took care of everything and I’ve been feeling good since then," Kovalchuk said.

Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen said before Sunday’s game that he’s sticking with Heath Bell as his closer, despite pulling him from a second straight save chance Saturday. Bell has an 8.47 ERA, a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 10:14, and has blown four of 11 save opportunities.

Rockies OF Dexter Fowler (ankle) did not start for the fourth straight game Sunday, but should be able to rejoin the lineup Monday. Fowler has five homers, 19 RBIs and an on-base percentage of .336 in 42 games.

The Nats are in first place, but they’re not resting on their laurels. Washington is actively seeking to trade for a veteran reliever, according to ESPN.com’s Buster Olney. Washington’s bullpen is unsettled with Drew Storen (elbow) and Brad Lidge (hernia) sidelined and Henry Rodriguez struggling. Rodriguez blew three saves before being moved out of the closer’s role last week.

GGL is in much better form then Llodra, and has had a completely superior clay season. Llodra is 0-7 in his last 7 matches on clay, and hasn’t won a match at the French Open since 2008 (0-4). GGL is coming off a nice run at Rome, winning 3 matches, and hasn’t lost in the first round in any of the clay tournaments this year. GGL wins in 4 sets….

                          Thomaz Bellucci/Viktor Troicki Over 38.5 (2 Units)

Very even match… can’t see either player winning in straight sets. 6 out of Troicki’s last 7 grand slam matches have gone 4 sets or more, with the last 3 going 5 sets. 7 out of Bellucci’s last 10 grand slam matches have gone 4 sets or more…. Will probably end up being one of the better early round matches in the tournament.

                          Dolgopolov/Stakhovsky Over 35.5 (2 Units)

Nothing is every easy or straight forward in a Dolgo match… He is notorious for taking sets off, as evidenced by the fact that 7 out of his last 9 grand slam matches have gone over 35 games. On clay this year, there has been at least one tiebreaker in 6 out of Stahkovsky’s 10 matches, and I feel like he is good to win at least one set…. I see this one going over easily in 4 sets, with one tiebreak.
