Friday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers

    Streaking

Chris Sale, Chicago White Sox (8-2, 2.05 ERA)

The 6-foot-6 lefty is garnering comparisons to Randy Johnson and you can see why looking at his track record over the last month. He is 5-0 with a 0.98 ERA over his last five outings and has struck out seven batters in all but one of those starts. Sale also leads the AL in ERA and batting average allowed (.188) and has earned his supporters 4.47 units this year.

Ryan Dempster, Chicago Cubs (2-3, 2.31 ERA)

Since the Cubs bailed him out for once in a no-decision against the Padres at the end of last month, Dempster has been repaying the favor. He hasn’t allowed a run since, going 2-0 with nine strikeouts and one walk over 15 innings of work. The Cubs are averaging 8.7 runs in his last three, up from 4.0 runs on the year.

    Slumping

Anthony Bass, San Diego Padres (2-6, 4.38 ERA)

Bass owned a 2.94 ERA over his first eight starts of the season, but has allowed 19 runs over his last four outings, failing to pitch through the sixth inning in any of those. Getting out of jams is Bass’ big bugaboo with most of the problems coming after the fifth inning. San Diego pitching coach Darren Balsley recently said mechanics aren’t to blame.

Bronson Arroyo, Cincinnati Reds (2-4, 3.79 ERA)

Arroyo ran into some more bad fortune in his last start that saw him allow just two runs over seven innings in a 3-2 loss to Detroit. Both of those runs came from solo homers and he’s allowed three dingers in his last two outings. The Reds have dropped four of his last five starts.

Friday’s betting tips: England shuffles lineup to attack Sweden

      Weather to watch

Ukraine vs. France: Temperatures are expected to reach 33 degrees Celsius (91 Farenheit).

      Who’s hot

Euro 2012: France is unbeaten in its last 22 games.

MLB: San Francisco has won 12 of its last 14 overall and 10 of its last 14 interleague games.

WNBA: The Minnesota Lynx can set a WNBA record by winning their 10th straight game to start a season Friday. They’ve opened the year 6-3 against the
      spread.

      Who’s not

Euro 2012: Ukraine is 0-3-3 in its six matches with France.

MLB: The Colorado Rockies have lost seven straight and 13 of their last 16 in interleague play.

WNBA: The Washington Mystics are 5-11 ATS in their last 16 games overall.

      Key stat

1 – The Seattle Storm visit the winless Tulsa Shock with just one win on the year themselves. The Storm have dropped eight of their last 10 games against the spread and own the league’s worst scoring offense, averaging only 64.9 points per contest. Seattle is set as a 2-point road underdog.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Adam LaRoche, Washington Nationals – LaRoche fouled a ball off his foot Tuesday and didn’t play Wednesday. After Thursday’s off day, the Nats are hoping he can return to the lineup, but his status is still questionable. He’s hitting .261 with 11 homers and 42 RBI.

      Game of the day

      Ukraine (+250) vs. France (+100) Draw (+215)

      Notable quotable

"I did not call my players cowards. [But] we were playing a little cautious, we didn't show the aggression I wanted to see. I think some of the players were nervous in the first half, but we played a good game in the second half." –Sweden coach Erik Hamren, disputing reports that he called his players “cowards” following the club’s loss to Ukraine. Sweden is set as a +240 underdog to England (+100). The draw is priced at +225.

      Notes and tips

England will reportedly start 6-foot-3 striker Andy Carroll alongside Danny Welbeck Friday. Considering nine of the last 11 goals Sweden has conceded (including Andriy Shevchenko’s pair for Ukraine in the opener), it might be a good idea. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will begin the game on the bench to make room for Carroll, while Ashley Cole will start wide on the left.

The Seattle Mariners made some big changes to their lineup and sent struggling starter Blake Beavan and troubled third baseman Alex Liddi to Class AAA Tacoma. At the same time, the Mariners put right-handed reliever Stephen Pryor and left fielder Mike Carp on the disabled list. New to the roster are two positions players, outfielders Casper Wells and Franklin Gutierrez, and two right-handed pitchers, Erasmo Ramirez and Steve Delabar.

The Bobcats could be looking to trade the No. 2 overall pick in the June 28 draft. There is a workout set for two of the top candidates for that pick, Florida's Bradley Beal and North Carolina's Harrison Barnes, either of whom would be considered an upgrade in the backcourt for different reasons. It's thought the Bobcats could either trade down to get multiple picks or even trade out of the first round, as they did in 2007.

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Carlos Beltran went to the emergency room Wednesday night for what manager Mike Matheny called stomach virus. He wasn’t expected to play Thursday and his status for Friday’s game is questionable. Beltran is hitting .298 with 19 homers and 47 RBI.

            Hondo

The Rays were very disappointing against Bill Maher’s Mets yesterday, but Hondo bounced back with Verlander and the Tigers to limit the growth of his deficit, which stands at 1,360 minosos.

Tonight, Sale looks like a deal against the Dodgers – 10 units on the White Sox.

                        Philadelphia +112 over TORONTO Pinnacle
The Blue Jays have just one win in their past seven games. Drew Hutchison has done well in his first exposure to major league hitting. He had outstanding command in the minors and he’s brought that with him to the majors. Four of Hutchison’s 10 starts have been really good and xERA shows that he’s got the potential to be a solid contributor. However, a 26% line-drive rate is concerning and so is the five jacks he’s allowed in his past four starts. Hutchison had a quick rise through the minors. With only had 32 IP at AA, and none at AAA, it wouldn’t be surprising to see some struggles at this level. He’ll be facing a Phillies team that has scored 4.9 runs per game since May 7, which is the fourth best mark in the majors. Vance Worley is the forgotten man in Philadelphia as Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels, and Roy Halladay are justifiably the headline grabbers. Worley went 11-3 with a 3.01 ERA in 132 IP last season and the Phillies won their first 14 straight games that he started. He missed a couple of weeks in May with a bone chip but threw a six-inning gem against the Orioles in his second game back. Worley has 54 K’s and just 19 walks in 54 frames. He has a strong 50% groundball profile and his 3.00 ERA is right in line with his skills supported 3.18 xERA. After playing well at home, Toronto was just swept by the Nationals and a reeling team looking to a very green rookie spotting a tag is too risky for our liking. Play: Philadelphia +112 (Risking 2 units).

N.Y. METS -113 over Cincinnati Pinnacle
The Mets are not only seeing beach balls at the plate right now but they’ve played extremely well at home all season long. They’re coming off a three game sweep in Tampa in which they scored an incredible 29 runs against one of the best staffs in the league. They’ll take a step down in class when facing Bronson Arroyo and the Reds’ staff. Current Mets have faced Arroyo 125 times and have hit .280 against him with a .324 OBP and a .724 OPS. Arroyo has allowed four runs or more in four of his past six starts and has a BAA this season of .290. If you haven't hopped on the Dillon Gee bandwagon by now because of his pedestrian 4.42 ERA, it’s time to change your thinking. Gee has a 3.21 xERA, an elite 54% groundball rate, 70 K’s in 77 innings, with just 22 walks issued. These are outstanding skills that have not been rewarded and as a result of his misleading surface numbers, we get a nice underlay on the Mets as a small favorite. Play N.Y. Mets -113 (Risking 2 units to win 1.74).

Philadelphia Phillies @ Toronto Blue Jays - PHILLIES TO WIN (+117)
                          Listed Pitchers: Worley vs Hutchison
(Note: I'm risking 2.00 units to win 2.34 units)

The Phillies have won their last 2 games, taking the three game set vs the Twins and can now feel better about themselves as they head into Toronto. Philadelphia knows that at 31-34 they have some work to do, but they hope to work their way towards the postseason again this year. The Phillies are 19-15 on the road. Toronto has lost 3 straight and 6 of their last 7 games coming into tonight, dropping them 6.5 games back in the AL East. Toronto is 31-32 on the year and 16-15 at home. With one of the AL's best starting pitchers this season, Brandon Morrow, hitting the DL the mood in Toronto isn't too good, as they knew they would need a lot from Morrow and Romero to guide this team into a push for the playoffs. Philadelphia had their bats going in Minnesota scoring 6, 9, and 7 runs. The Blue Jays have scored 3 runs or less in 6 of their last 7 games. Vance Worley will go for the Phillies and is 3-2 on the season with a 3.00 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, and .259 opponents batting average. He is actually pitching better on the road with a 2-1 record and 2.03 ERA. Drew Hutchison was tagged for 5 earned runs over 6.1 innings his last time out in Atlanta, which brings his numbers to 5-3 on the season with a 4.66 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, and .259 opponents batting average. Hutchison is better at home with a 3-0 record and 2.42 ERA. The Phillies are now 5-2 in their last 7 games as a road underdog, and 8-3 in their last 11 Game 1 of a series. They are also 18-8 in Worley's last 26 starts overall, 9-4 in his last 13 road starts, and 9-1 in his last 10 starts vs a team with a losing record. The Jays are 1-6 in their last 7 interleague games, and just 1-5 in their last 6 home games. Philadelphia has come into Toronto and won 6 of their last 8 meetings, including winning 3 straight series' in Toronto. With Philadelphia swinging hot bats right now and the Jays struggling to score runs I will take Philadelphia behind Worley as underdogs. Take the Phillies.
