Arkansas (+12) over LSU
2:30 PM -- Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium
ARKANSAS (4-7) +12 over LSU (9-2) Prediction: LSU by 3-4 Played in Fayetteville, Arkansas Played at Reynolds Razorback Stadium (72,000) Artificial Turf Weather: Clear, game-time temperatures in the 40s, relative humidity of 37% and no appreciable wind. Starting Time: 2:35 TV: CBS Comments: LSU comes into this game the rightful favorite and with an outside chance to get to the SEC championship game and an automatic bid to a coveted BCS bowl. Coach Les Miles says his team intends to fire its best shot again today and keep alive those options, Frankly, I don’t believe it. LSU will certainly come to play and is a formidable opponent for any team in the country but as for pulling out all the stops to get win number 10, I’m not buying. Meantime, Arkansas will definitely fire its best shot in hopes of redeeming a bit of its reputation after a dreadful season caused by a multitude of problems and distractions. It is especially interesting to me that LSU—quite significant in fact—gave up a season high 316 yards passing in last week’s 41-35 win over Mississippi and today faces Razorbacks quarterback Tyler Wilson who can really air it out and who needs just 88 yards to become the school’s all-time leading passer. Despite its record, Arkansas is not without plenty of blue-chip talent and it does have the ability to win this one straight up. The situation makes the ‘dog the side.

Arizona (-3) over Arizona State
10:00 PM -- Arizona Stadium
ARIZONA (7-4) -3 over Arizona State (6-5) Prediction: Arizona by 10-13 Played in Tucson, Arizona Played at Arizona Stadium (57,400) Grass Weather: Clear, game-time temperature in 50s, relative humidity of 23% and wind out of the north at 8 miles per hour. Starting Time: 10:05 TV: ESPN Comments: The records of these teams might give one the impression they are relatively equal in talent but the facts say otherwise, that Arizona is a much better team and is playing right now at a higher level than is Arizona State. Arizona got off to a slow start this season but is 4-1 in its last five games and in those outings got signature wins against Washington, 52-17, and Southern California, 39-36. On the other hand, ASU is 1-4 in its last five games and has not shown any ability this season to beat a good team. The Sun Devils’ wins have come against I-AA Northern Arizona (8-3), Illinois (2-9), Utah (4-7), California (3-9), Colorado (1-10) and Washington State (2-9). Meantime, against teams of substance, ASU is 0-5, losing at Missouri (5-6), to Oregon (10-1), UCLA (9-2), at Oregon State (8-2) and USC (7-4), teams with a combined won-lost record of 39-15. Arizona has it all going for it today and there is no reason to think the Wildcats won’t get it done for the fourth time in the last five tries against Arizona State.
Clear. Winds blowing from the East at 10-15 m.p.h. Game-time temperature: Around 70.

Northern Ill (-21) over Eastern Mich
1:00 PM -- Rynearson Stadium
Northern Illinois (10-1) -21 over EASTERN MICHIGAN (2-9) Prediction: Northern Illinois by 30-35 Played in Ypsilanti, Michigan Played at Rynearson Stadium (30,200) Artificial Turf Weather: Mostly cloudy with a chance of snow, game-time temperatures in 20s, relative humidity of 58% and wind out of the northwest at 10-15 miles per hour. Starting Time: 1:05 TV: ESPN2 Comments: Northern Illinois is the MAC Western Division champion and will meet Kent State (10-1) next Friday for the Mid-American championship but that does not mean the Huskies won’t come to play today. They finally are ranked 24th in the national Top 25 polls and they won’t run any risk to losing that spot. In addition to being incentive-driven, Northern Illinois has so much more talent than does Eastern Michigan that it should overwhelm the Eagles. The Huskies offense has been all but unstoppable, averaging 488.7 yards and 39.7 points per game—all because of duel-threat quarterback Jordan Lynch who would be a Heisman Trophy candidate if he played at a more popular school. Lynch is rewriting the record book. He holds the NCAA record for the most consecutive 100-yard rushing games by a quarterback (9), is the first player in NCAA history to pass for more than 400 yards and run for more than 150 yards in a single game, ranks third in the nation in rushing yards total offense and points responsible and is ranked 10th in passing efficiency—and he is surrounded by blue-chip talent. It also is lost on most that Northern Illinois has won 15 straight games against MAC opponents, stands 19-1 in its last 20 games and is riding a 10-game losing streak. The Huskies lost their opening game of the season, at Soldier Field, to Iowa, 18-17. Northern Illinois has won four straight from the Eagles and 10 of the last 11. Slice and dice this one through the handicapping process as many times as you want, but it still grades out as a blowout.
Partly cloudy. Winds blowing from the West at 15-25 m.p.h. Game-time temperature

Belmont (-13½) over Northeastern
11:00 PM -- Sullivan Arena - Anchorage, AK
Belmont (4-0) -13.5 over Northeastern (3-1) Prediction: Belmont by 19-20 Semifinal Game of Alaska Shootout Played in Anchorage, Alaska, at Sullivan Arena (8,700) Starting Time: 11:05 TV: CBS Sports Comments: Belmont is one of those college teams that do not get much press even though it has one of the best—and I mean best in the truest sense of the word—basketball programs in the country. Belmont, a private Christian university (enrollment 6,700), that has been playing successfully with the big boys for years. The Bruins have won 20 or more games and gone to the NCAA Tournament in seven of the last nine seasons and are again loaded with talent this time around. Belmont captured a signature win on its way to this tournament, knocking off Stanford, 70-62, as a 7-point underdog in Palo Alto, and seems to have all the edges in this one against an offensively challenged Northeastern team. Belmont is an explosive offensive team and plays lock-down defense. No team has hit better than 38% against the Bruins this season. I look for Belmont to win this one in a blowout, after opening the tournament rather sluggishly in its first game, a 74-60 win over Alaska-Anchorage. That game started at 1:00 a.m. Nashville time and one could tell the time-zone differential slowed down the Bruins. They are now acclimated and should rock ‘n roll tonight.

Michigan (-4½) over Kansas State
4:30 PM -- Madison Square Garden - New York, NY
Michigan (4-0) -4.5 over Kansas State (5-0) Prediction: Michigan by 9-10 Championship Game of Nit Tip-Off Tournament Played in New York City at Madison Square Garden (19,033) Starting Time: 4:55 TV: ESPN Comments: Even though both teams are undefeated they have much to prove. Kansas State’s five wins have come against Delaware, 66-63, North Florida, 74-55, Alabama-Huntsville, 87-26, Lamar, 79-55, and North Dakota, 85-53. This obviously is not a run through a “killer’s row” of basketball teams and today’s game is the first this season in which the Wildcats face a quality opponent. As for Michigan, the Wolverines arrived at 4-0 with wins over Pittsburgh, 67-62, Cleveland State, 77-47, IUPUI, 91-54, and Slippery Rock, 100-62—a much more respectable schedule. My analysis says Michigan has the better talent, is far more athletic than Kansas State and has the quickness and speed to give any opponent fits. The nod must go to Michigan in this one.

AlaskaAnchorage (-4) over CalRiverside
5:00 PM -- Sullivan Arena - Anchorage, AK
Alaska-Anchorage (4-1) -4 over Cal-Riverside (1-4) Prediction: Alaska-Anchorage by 9-10 Consolation Bracket Game of Alaska Shootout Played in Anchorage, Alaska, at Sullivan Arena (8,700) Starting Time: 5:00 No TV Comments: Alaska-Anchorage is an NCAA Division II school with an excellent basketball program and has all the edges in this game against a Cal-Riverside team that has so little offensive talent it tries to get it done with defense. As impressive as hold its opponents to a scoring average of just 65.2 points per game, it obviously has not worked. Things do not figure to get any better against Alaska-Anchorage which played quite well in the opening game of this tournament before losing to an outstanding Belmont team, 74-60. While this game is being played on a neutral floor (Alaska-Anchorage plays its home games in a tiny 1,500-seat gym), the Seawolves have the edges to win this one and should to it rather comfortably.
