NCAAB Game of the Day: Kansas at Ohio State

Kansas at Ohio State (-5, 139)

A big-time showdown is on tap Saturday when No. 8 Kansas visits No. 7 Ohio State in a rematch of last season’s Final Four contest won by the Jayhawks. Both teams are powerful again despite losing a stellar inside player – Ohio State’s Jared Sullinger and Kansas’ Thomas Robinson – from the teams that met twice last season. The Jayhawks won both of last season’s meetings and bring an eight-game winning streak into Saturday’s tilt. Coach Bill Self views the trip to Columbus as a major gauge for his squad despite winning the last three games by an average of 31 points. “Let’s be serious – the season starts Saturday,” Self said. “Now we can go up there and hopefully take a real enthusiastic team up there, hunker down, see how tough we are and find out a lot about ourselves.” Ohio State has won five straight games and has won 39 consecutive home non-conference games after posting a 10-point win over Winthrop on Dec. 18.

            TV: 4 p.m. ET, CBS.

ABOUT KANSAS (9-1): Center Jeff Withey blocked seven shots in last season’s national semifinal and leads the nation with 54 rejections (5.4 per game). His offensive game has improved and his 17-point, 13-rebound outing against Richmond on Dec. 18 was his fourth double-double of the campaign. Withey is averaging 14.1 points and 8.1 rebounds and shooting 59.3 percent from the field. Freshman guard Ben McLemore is averaging a team-leading 15.9 points and senior guard Travis Releford is averaging 13 points while shooting 58 percent from the field. Senior point guard Elijah Johnson is averaging 9.6 points and 5.3 assists. The contest marks the Jayhawks’ first true road game of the season. “I’ve been to (Ohio State’s) building three times when I was at Illinois,” Self said. “It’s a good building. It will be juiced and ready.” Kansas’ only loss was to Michigan State on a neutral court in Atlanta.

ABOUT OHIO STATE (9-1): The Buckeyes have an average winning margin of 25.8 points since losing to Duke on Nov. 28 but the 65-55 victory over Winthrop smacked of a team looking ahead to its next game. Ohio State didn’t put the game away until late and junior forward Deshaun Thomas (21 points on 7-of-21 shooting) admitted after the game that the Buckeyes took Winthrop lightly. Junior guard Aaron Craft was highly displeased with the showing. “If we need a wake-up call for our upcoming game this weekend then we shouldn’t be playing at all,” Craft said. “Every team we play, we take it one game at a time. If we are not sure we are ready to play Kansas with what’s at stake, then we need to reevaluate ourselves as a team.” Thomas leads Ohio State in scoring (20.4) and rebounding (6.9) and junior guard Lenzelle Smith Jr. averages 11.5 points.

            TRENDS:

            * Over is 4-1 in Jayhawks’ last five overall.
            * Home team is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.
            * Buckeyes are 0-4-1 ATS in their last five vs. Big 12 opponents.
            * Jayhawks are 3-12 ATS in their last 15 vs. Big Ten foes.

            TIP-INS:

            1. Kansas has won the last five meetings and has a 7-3 series edge over the Buckeyes.

            2. The Jayhawks haven’t trailed in a game since Nov. 15 against Tennessee-Chattanooga, a span of 293 minutes, 17 seconds.

            3. Thomas has five 20-point outings and has scored in double figures in all 10 games.

New Orleans Bowl: What Bettors Need to Know

East Carolina vs. UL Lafayette (-4.5, 64.5)

R+L CARRIERS NEW ORLEANS BOWL GAME STORYLINES

                1. Louisiana-Lafayette won four of its last five games, scoring 31 or more points in each of the wins in claiming second place in the Sun Belt, and makes its second consecutive trip to The Big Easy after winning the bowl last year. The Ragin' Cajuns will put their high-scoring attack to the test against East Carolina in a near inevitable shootout. The Pirates, who won five of their last six before losing the Conference USA tiebreaker to Central Florida, have scored more than 40 points in four of those wins.

                2. The Ragin' Cajuns and the Pirates make the most of their scoring opportunities. Louisiana-Lafayette is tied for second in the country in red zone efficiency while the Pirates lead C-USA and are tied for fifth nationally.

                3. While both teams have had little trouble scoring the ball, neither has had much success stopping their opponents as they allow close to 30 points per game. The Pirates suffered each of their four defeats by at least 20 points.

                TV: 12 p.m. ET, Saturday, Dec. 22.

LINE: This line opened as high as UL Lafayette -6 and the total has crept up from 64 to 65.5 at some shops.

                TRENDS:

                * Over is 4-1 in Pirates' last five games overall.
                * Ragin' Cajuns are 4-1 ATS in their last five games overall.
                * Pirates are 0-5 ATS in their last five games vs. a team with a winning record.
                * Under is 4-1 in Ragin' Cajuns' last five games following a win.

ABOUT EAST CAROLINA (8-4, 7-1 C-USA): Shane Carden has racked up 2,838 yards of total offense and 29 touchdowns this season. In the Pirates' 65-59 double-overtime victory over Marshall in their season finale, Carden completed 38 of 47 passes for 439 yards and three touchdowns while running for another three scores. Justin Hardy, Carden's top target, has caught 83 passes for 1,046 yards and 10 touchdowns as East Carolina's air attack ranks 35th in the nation. Vintavious Cooper's 1,030 rushing yards and seven scores helps balance the attack. The Pirates are likely underdogs because of the four blowout losses to South Carolina, North Carolina, Central Florida and Navy. Also, East Carolina failed to record a victory against a bowl-bound opponent.

ABOUT LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE (8-4, 6-2 Sun Belt): While its the Ragin' Cajuns four wins in their last five games that sent them to New Orleans, its their lone loss in that span - a 27-20 defeat at the hands of then-No. 6 Florida that put them in the public spotlight. Dual-threat quarterback Terrance Broadway has thrown for 2,565 yards and 16 touchdowns while rushing for 661 yards and another eight scores. Three of his four best rushing performances came in Louisiana-Lafayette's last three games -- all wins. Paired with Alonzo Harris (761 yards, eight touchdowns), the Ragin' Cajuns average 187.3 yards per game on the ground, 40th-best in the nation. Louisiana-Lafayette recorded two victories over bowl teams this season in Louisiana-Monroe and Western Kentucky.

Game: Atlanta at Detroit (Saturday 12/22 8:30 PM Eastern)
                  Pick: Detroit +3.5 (-110)

After making the playoffs a year ago, the Detroit Lions have had a very frustrating season in 2012. They have fallen sharply from last season's team, sitting at 4-10 this year. This is a team that has been riddled with injuries all season, and just didn't quite have the depth or luck to get anything to go their way. Anything and everything that could go wrong did. Don't get me wrong. This is a not a very good team, but their breaks have made it seem worse than it is. At 12-2 on the season, the Atlanta Falcons have had pretty much everything go their way so far. The bottom line is that these teams aren't as far apart as the records would make you think. Since week four, the Falcons have gone to battle with eight teams that had losing records at the time they played them. They lost two of them, and four others were all within 4 points when the final whistle blew. Detroit has seen their last four games at home vs. teams with a combined record of 40-16-1, with a net point differential of just -5. They played Seattle, Green Bay, Houston, and Indianapolis. Against these four teams, they were outscored by by a grand total of just 9 points - none of them by more than 4. The line is bigger than it should be after the Lions lost to Arizona 38-10 last week. This Lions team has been invested in every home game this season, and in it to win it every time. They will be up to make a statement against a 12-2 team. Take the points on Detroit.
