    Winning Points

    **PREFERRED
    Boston over *Brooklyn by 4
Rajon Rondo is easily running away with the assists lead in the league and the Celtics
are well-rested having last played at home on Friday. The Nets have upgraded their roster yet remain a work in progress. Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett can take advantage
of Brooklyn’s perimeter defense, which ranked among the five worst in the league in
    defensive field goal percentage.
    BOSTON 100-96.

New York over *Los Angeles Lakers by 4
Until Steve Nash and Pau Gasol return, the Lakers are a stay-away from team no matter how tempting they might look as a ‘dog. Los Angeles was 1-6 ATS the first seven
times it has been a ‘dog this season.
    NEW YORK 104-100.

*Miami over Oklahoma City by 3
This is the Christmas Day highlight matchup and should be a great game. It’s the first
time the teams are meeting since the Heat defeated the Thunder in the NBA finals.
This is the Thunder’s third consecutive road matchup, but they haven’t played since
Thursday. Kevin Durant was battling Kobe Bryant and Carmelo Anthony for the scoring lead, while LeBron James had a streak of 26 straight regular-season games of scoring 20 or more points going entering the second half of this month.
    MIAMI 109-106.

    Houston over *Chicago by 1
The Rockets were 8-1 ATS in their first nine games against Eastern Conference foes,
including defeating the Bulls, 93-89, as one-point home favorites a month ago behind
    28 points from James Harden.
    HOUSTON 93-92.

*Los Angeles Clippers over Denver by 5
The Clippers have covered nine of their first 13 home contests. Denver entered the
middle of this month improving its road performances covering three of its last four
on the highway. Free throw shooting continues to plague the Nuggets, however, as
they ranked last at 68 percent.
    LA CLIPPERS 105-100.

If you forget to open that Fresno State/SMU Christmas Eve present –
don’t worry – we’ve got you covered in Miami as our database notes that
defending NBA champs are 0-6 SU and 0-5-1 ATS on Christmas Day. It will
also be the first time that Kevin Durant and company will be seeing the Big
Three since getting their doors blown off in last year’s NBA finals. We also
want you to keep a close eye on Miami’s game with Utah on the 22nd as
the Thunder are 7-1 ATS in this series in the regular season when the Heat
arrive off a double-digit win. Better yet for OKC supporters, the ‘Heatles’
are 1-8 ATS as favorites after Jazzing it up, including 0-4 ATS at home.
However, the bow on this beauty comes courtesy of our tireless database
as it notes: the Thunder are 24-5 SU and ATS with four or more days rest
if they are .588 or greater on the season. ‘Take’ another present as we say,
      ‘Merry Christmas’ to all.

Boston 98 - BROOKLYN 97—There was evidence that Brooklyn had

leapfrogged Boston in the East pecking order after a pair of wins and covers at
Celtics’ expense, including a chippy 95-83 success at TD Garden on Nov. 28
when Boston’s Rajon Rondo and Nets’ Kris Humphries and Gerald Wallace
were all ejected after a scuffle that followed a hard foul by Humphries on Kevin
Garnett. Since that last meeting, however, Brooklyn has sputtered, losing 8 of
last 10 SU thru Dec. 20, with C Brook Lopez missing much of that stretch due
to a foot injury. Even upon Lopez’ return to active duty, however, Brooklyn has
continued to stumble. The question is whether Boston can summon a big effort
on road, where it has lost five in a row. But with Celtics’ lineup intact and Rondo
likely to be playing with added focus, don’t like the idea of laying any points with
            recently-wobbling Nets.

New York 104 - LA LAKERS 94—Quick rematch from Dec. 13 battle at
MSG, when Knicks raced to big early lead before Carmelo Anthony was forced
to exit in 2nd Q due to ankle injury, although New York still held on for 116-107
win and cover. ‘Melo missed subsequent two games but returned apparently no
worse for wear on Dec. 19 vs. Nets when scoring 31 in Knicks’ 100-86 win. Lake
Show stirring a bit since that loss at MSG, winning next three games thru Dec.
            20. But before getting carried away, remember that two of those wins were vs.
lowly Wizards and Bobcats, and L.A. was life-and-death vs. Charlotte in 101-
100 win. Pau Gasol has returned to Laker lineup, but L.A. perimeter defense
remains very spotty, and Knicks had won 10 of last 12 SU (and 9 of last 10 with
Carmelo in srating lineup) thru Dec. 20.

Oklahoma City 100 - MIAMI 97—First time these two have seen one
another since June, when Miami took care of Ok City in five games to claim NBA
title. Thunder appear poised for revenge with SU wins in 12 straight thru Dec.
20 and a four-day rest period to get ready for Finals rematch. Ok City has made
quick adjustment to departure of sixth-man supreme James Harden, as his
replacement Kevin Martin from Houston has been scoring 15 ppg (which
approximates Harden’s output with Thunder) and providing similar spark off
bench. Heat were hitting on all cylinders last June, but that hasn’t necessarily
been case in past month as Miami just 5-6 vs. spread last 11 thru Dec. 19.

CHICAGO 94 - Houston 88—Chicago seeking revenge for 4-point loss at
Toyota Center on Nov. 21, when Bulls shot only 40% from floor and couldn’t
keep pace with James Harden, whose 28 points paced Rockets to win. It’s too
bad we won’t get to see a Derrick Rose-Harden matchup until next season
(unless these two should miraculously end up together in the Finals...highly
unlikely) as the Chicago star G remains out while rehabbing his knee injury
suffered last April in playoffs. Rose’s absence has obviously made it tough for
Chicago to extend margins, as Luol Deng not nearly a similar go-to threat, which
can partly explain Chicago’s subpar 3-11 United Center spread mark (2-9 as
home chalk). Still, Bulls not likely to be laying many points vs. Rockets, who
have had their own problems on road, covering just 3 of first 11 away. “Totals”
alert—no surprise Chicago trending “under” (11-3 last 14 thru Dec. 20), but
Houston now “under” last five prior to facing Grizzlies on Dec. 22, roughly
coinciding with HC Kevin McHale’s return to sidelines.

LA CLIPPERS 109 - Denver 105—Note the interesting series trends from
last season, when the road team covered all four meetings. Of course, Clippers
appear to have improved considerably since, and were on verge of setting alltime
franchise SU win streak record of 12 in a row as they prepared to face
Sacto last Friday night. Clips have had their offense in gear during win streak,
scoring 104 ppg with four players tallying 12 ppg or more during the uptick. But
if number inflates, capable Denver could be worth a look, as Nuggets have
struck a rich vein of form in their own three-game win streak (victims including
Memphis & San Antonio) thru Dec. 19, scoring 111 ppg and shooting 50% from
            floor in process.

                      double-dime bet 509 DEN 7.0 (-110) 5Dimes vs 510 LAC
                      Analysis:
The Nuggets are off a 110-88 win in which 36 of their 47 baskets were assisted. This is a strong positive indicator for Denver, as they are 14-0 ATS on the road when they are off a game in which at least 71% of their baskets were assisted. The SDQL text is:
                      team=Nuggets and A and p:assists*1.0/p:FGM >0.71 and 20081201<=date
Note that the Nuggets have won every game straight up, despite being the underdog in NINE of the 14.
The Clippers are on quite a streak. In their last game, they bombed the Suns 103-77, making 11-of-21 from the arc. This is a soft spot for LA, as they are 0-10 ATS (-6.0 ppg) with at most one day of rest after a game in which they scored more than 30% of their points from the three-point line. The Clips are 0-2 ATS in this spot this season.
In addition, the Clippers are 0-4 ATS (-13.1 ppg) in franchise history at home after a win on the road in which Chris Paul had at least 10 assists – losing every game straight up. The SDQL is:
                      H and p:AW and 10<=Clippers:Chris Paul:p:assists
                      We’re grabbing the points.
