                        Larry Ness's 10* LEGEND PLAY

Pittsburgh Panthers at Mississippi Jan 5 2013 1:00PM

My 10* LEGEND Play is on Ole Miss at 1:00 ET.

A pair of 6-6 schools square off in Saturday’s BBVA Compass Bowl from Birmingham, Alabama. Birmingham may be 750 miles from Pitt’s campus but the Panthers sure know the way to Legion Field, as this makes their THIRD consecutive trip to this contest. Pitt beat Kentucky 27-10 two year’s ago but last year was handled 28-6 by SMU. Ole Miss is back in the ‘bowling’ business for the first time since winning back-to-back Cotton Bowls in 2008 and 2009. Pitt’s Paul Chyrst is in his first season at Pitt and there were rumors that the first-time head coach was moving on but he will be on the sidelines Saturday, facing Ole Miss and Hugh Freeze. Chryst guided the Panthers to a fifth consecutive bowl appearance in 2012, going 3-4 in their final season in the Big East before moving to the ACC. I’m not quite sure what to make of Pitt, which lost 31-17 at home to Youngstown St but also went 2-1 vs ranked opponents, while nearly pulling off one of the biggest upsets of the season in South Bend back on Nov 3. The Panthers squandered a 20-6 lead to start the fourth quarter against the Irish but eventually lost 29-26 in three OTs. RB Ray Graham rushed for a season-high 172 yards and a TD on 24 carries in that loss and ran for 399 yards with five of his team-leading 13 TDs overall, in those three games against top-25 foes. However, he also had less than 75 yards rushing in FIVE different games this season, with lows of 20, 41 and 57 in three contests (3.0 YPC in that three-game stretch). Graham’s talented but inconsistent. QB Tino Sunseri has completed 66.5 percent for 3,103 yards with a fabulous 19-2 ratio but one does not get the feeling that Chyrst has much faith in him (best example being the OT periods vs Notre Dame). Moving over to Ole Miss, Hugh Freeze went 10-2 SU and ATS last season at Arkansas St and used that season to take over in Oxford after the firing of Houston Nutt. The Rebels’ 6-6 season came against a much tougher schedule than the one faced by Pitt with Ole Miss faring well against the SEC elite, covering in losses to Alabama, LSU and Texas A&M, almost upsetting the latter two. Most impressively, needing to win the Egg Bowl at home vs Miss St in in their final regular season game to become bowl-eligible, the Rebels won in a rout, 41-24 while tallying 527 yards. QB Bo Wallace threw for five TDs (294 yards) plus added 40 yards rushing. All reports are that Ole Miss is very excited about being back in the “bowl rotation” and fans have bought up a majority of the tickets for this relatively short trip. Freeze was 10-2 ATS last year at Arkansas St and TY’s Ole Miss team was 9-3 ATS, giving him a two-year 19-5 ATS run. Make that 20-5!

                        Good luck...Larry

                        Prediction: Mississippi
