5-Star NFL Playoff Shocker of the Month

05:00 PM NFL (111) GREEN BAY PACKERS (112) SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS
Take: (111) GREEN BAY PACKERS. These teams met in the opener, a 30-22 49er win Green Bay. "A lot has happened since we played San Francisco," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Saturday. "We're a different team." And he's right. The weather in San Francisco is perfect for a pass-happy team like Green Bay, 56 degrees, no rain, and little wind. After a 1-2 start, the Packers are on an 11-3 SU/9-5 ATS run. The offense is 9th in passing with 254 yards per game, 21st in rushing (103 pg) behind QB Aaron Rodgers (39 TDs, 8 picks). They overhauled an aging defense that was last in the NFL in 2011, going with the youth movement. RB Adrian Peterson, who had lanced the Packers for 409 yards in 2 games during the regular season, had 99 yards, carries for a 4.5 average Saturday. The story of the first half was the Packers' superb defense against Peterson, who carried 12 times for 48 yards. Safeties Charles Woodson and Morgan Burnett took turns coming down into the box, and Peterson was held to a long gain of 11. Woodson (broken collarbone) was back in the lineup for the first time since re-breaking his collarbone in Game 7. This is the first playoff game for second-year 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick on an offense that is predicated on running first. But the Packers will stack the box and force San Fran to throw, which gives all the edges to Green Bay and their huge edge at QB. Play the Packers!

4-STAR Orlando over LA CLIPPERS - Orlando continues to unwisely get into high scoring games. They've lost 10 straight games while the last nine have all gone over the total. See a pattern there? They've only scored more than two points less than expected in one of those 10 games. Expect Orlando to finally recognize this and play a low scoring closer game here.
Teams which are on a big run of overs tend to exceed expectations going forward. Teams which went over on at least the last eight games are 72-48-1 ATS

They did play well and lost to Denver, 108-105 last game. However, Orlando had a double-digit lead in that game. The Magic are 8-0 ATS (10.3 ppg) since April 05, 2008 on the road with at least one day of rest off a loss in which they led by 10+ points.

At the end of the third quarter, Orlando had lead by seven points. The Magic are 9-0 ATS (8.7 ppg) since January 22, 2000 on the road with at least one day of rest off a loss as a dog in which they led at the end of the third quarter and allowed between 91 and 112 points.

Denver pounded Orlando inside in that game. Of their 41 baskets, only four were threes as they continued going inside. Teams which allowed at least 68 points in the paint last game are 66-50-1 ATS.

While Orlando attempted 93 shots in that game, they only committed 11 turnovers. The Magic are 10-0 ATS (7.0 ppg) since April 03, 1996 on the road with two or more days of rest after a game in which their field goal attempt per turnover ratio was at least eight.

SPORTSBOOK BREAKERS PREDICTION: LA CLIPPERS 100, Orlando 97

The Baltimore Ravens will look to ride some momentum from their wild card victory over the Indianapolis Colts last weekend into Denver in hopes of upsetting the heavily favored Broncos and head to yet another AFC Championship. Baltimore received an extra boost leading up to their playoff encounter with the Colts last weekend as long time Ravens linebacker and future hall of famer Ray Lewis not only announced he would be active for the purple and black but he would be retiring at the end of the season making the game with Indy his last in Baltimore. There is no telling how much incentive the presence of Lewis had on the rest of his team especially on defense but his presence was definitely felt as he made a team high 12 tackles and was all over the field in typical Ray Lewis fashion.ship. The issues here is that Manning has basically played in doors his entire career and will be wearing special gloves. Additionally, the past few years the trend of having a week off has not worked well. Those teams have been getting killed. The momentum that they were riding gets lost and is now in the Broncos court while the ravens get to continue on the confidence they built from last weeks win. Final point is that during the fast pace regular season, you do not lay 10 points. If is even more profound during the more conservative lower scoring of the NFL playoffs.

                            Pinnacle San Francisco

Divisional Round Playoff Game of the Year

The Green Bay Packers advanced to the Division portion of the playoffs by beating the Minnesota Vikings 24-10 last Saturday. The Packers advantage going into last weeks game against the Vikings grew even larger when it was announced that quarterback Christian Ponder would not be able to play for the Vikings due to injury. Looking back at the matchup between these two teams in week one, it’s evident that the 49ers are a tough matchup for Green Bay. The 49ers are so dominant at the line on defense that they force you to throw and apply pressure very well. In that first matchup, the Packers managed just 45 total rushing yards with Rodgers total of 27 yards leading the team. Part of the discrepancy was the 49ers getting ahead in the game early and the Packers playing catch up for four quarters, but you see very similar results when you look at the Packers week three game against the Seattle Seahawks, who I consider to be similar in makeup to the 49ers. Against Seattle, the Packers ran for just 84 yards as a team and without giving up a turnover still managed to score just 12 points in a 14-12 loss on the road. Two key point to this game are that Rodgers lead the NFL in getting sacked and the 49er's D will get to him and force quick throws. Plus, we all watched last week when the Vikings QB Joe Webb was able to run as a scrambling QB. He was effective doing that and with San Francisco you get a very mobile QB with Colin Kaepernick that can run and that can throw.

                            MILLIONAIRES Seattle

It’s a bird battle when the Seattle Seahawks take on the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC Divisional Playoffs. We have the Seahawks soaring higher in this match-up. Seattle played its way into the Divisional portion of the playoffs with a 24-14 win against the Washington Redskins. Seattle fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter before coming up with a sixth straight win. If you can fall behind by 2 TD's, then fumble your next possession and still win by double digits ON THE ROAD, you get that sense that you belong at the top. This game all comes down to Marshawn Lynch. Marshawn Lynch continued to be effective with 32 carries for 132 yards and a touchdown. He will run the ball down the Falcons beaks and by the second half, their defense will be vulnerable to any and all that Russell Wilson wants to do. The Seahawks defensive strength is against the pass which should be assisted by the ineffective running game of the Falcons. The Falcons defense is not as stout from a yardage perspective, but they are still a good unit. The wrong side is favored in this game.

                            NO LIMIT Houston

New England looks to keep rolling while Houston is out to exact revenge in Foxboro. I'm not big on revenge when there's a blowout and the re-match is played the following year. But when it was played earlier this season it is still fresh. I still think there is a revenge factor for the Texans in this spot. They were embarrassed on national television by New England on December 10th and with the comments made in Boston newspapers earlier this week calling the Texans “terrible” you can be sure it’ll be bulletin board material for Houston. While I think New England is the better team here I think we have been too quick to dismiss the Texans who were Super Bowl favorites less than a month ago. The success of the Texans will come in the form of Arian Foster who continues to emerge as one of the league’s best running backs and if Foster can get going on the ground and keep Brady and Co off the field this one could be a lot closer than the line indicates. The Patriots pass defense is one of the worst in the NFL, so Houston will score and be able to keep the pointspread in their sights.
