Study Group: Wednesday's Top 25 NCB Betting Notes

Check out our quick-hitting betting notes on all of Wednesday’s ranked college basketball games:

    (15) North Carolina State Wolfpack at Maryland Terrapins (-2)

Ten consecutive victories, the latest over previously unbeaten and top-ranked Duke, have North Carolina State soaring as the Wolfpack travel to Maryland. The Terrapins have scored an average of 54.8 points in losses to the Hurricanes and Florida State, after putting up 94 in their conference opener against Virginia Tech. Maryland leads the ACC in field-goal defense, holding opponents to 35.3 percent shooting and rank last in the conference in turnover margin (-3.94). The Wolfpack are 1-10 ATS in the last 11 meetings.

Richmond Spiders at (13) Butler Bulldogs (-9)

Butler received a huge scare in Saturday's win at Dayton when leading scorer Rotnei Clarke was hurt in a harrowing fall. Clarke escaped serious injury and was diagnosed with a sprained neck, but the Bulldogs will be without him for at least the next two games. Richmond is also dealing with an injury to a key player. Forward Derrick Williams (ankle), the team’s second-leading scorer and No. 2 rebounder, will miss his fourth straight game. The Spiders are 0-4 ATS in their last four road games.

    (17) Michigan State Spartans at Penn State Nittany Lions (+11)

After losing at Minnesota in the Big Ten opener, the Spartans have needed big second halves to pull away from Purdue, Iowa and Nebraska -- all considered to be middle-tier to bottom-half teams in the conference. The starting backcourt of Keith Appling, Gary Harris and Denzel Valentine combined to shoot just 3-for-22 in Sunday's 66-56 win at home against Nebraska. Penn State has lost four straight, averaging just 49.5 points per game in the process. The Nittany Lions are 0-7 ATS in their last seven Wednesday games.

Georgia Bulldogs at (16) Missouri Tigers (-15)

Missouri will be without leading scorer Laurence Bowers, who sprained the MCL in his right knee last week. The inability of the Bulldogs to establish a second consistent scoring threat besides Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is a big reason Georgia ranks 318th nationally in scoring (59.5 points). The Bulldogs are facing their second ranked team in eight days; Georgia lost by 33 points at Florida on Jan. 9 and is 1-4 ATS in its last five road games.

    (18) Kansas State Wildcats at TCU Horned Frogs (+10)

Scoring could be a grind for both teams when Kansas State travels to TCU for a Big 12 game. The Horned Frogs are 341st out of 345 Division I teams in scoring (55.2), taking another tumble after a 51-40 loss Saturday against Baylor. They're eighth in scoring defense (55.3), however. Kansas State has only one player averaging double figures in scoring; senior guard Rodney McGruder (14.9). He’s been especially hot lately, averaging 19.3 points over the last six games. The Horned Frogs are 5-0 ATS in their last five games following a loss and K-State is 0-5-1 ATS in its last six road games.

    (21) New Mexico Lobos at Boise State Broncos (-2.5)

Off to its best start since 1987-88, Boise State looks to knock off its second ranked opponent in as many weeks when the Broncos host New Mexico. The Broncos won their seventh straight game last Wednesday against previously unbeaten Wyoming despite missing four suspended players. Three of them have been reinstated in time to face New Mexico. Leading scorer Derrick Marks and reserves Mikey Thompson and Darrious Hamilton have been reinstated after serving one-game suspensions for violating team rules, but reserve center Kenny Buckner’s suspension has been extended through Jan. 23. The Lobos are 4-1 ATS in their last five road games.

    (23) UNLV Runnin' Rebels at (14) San Diego State Aztecs (-4.5)

San Diego State will try to start 3-0 in the Mountain West Conference for a third consecutive season when the Aztecs host UNLV. Both teams feature elite scorers/rebounders. Anthony Bennett, a 6-8 freshman forward for UNLV, averages 19.6 points and 9.3 rebounds. Jamaal Franklin, a 6-5 junior guard, averages 17.8 and 10.3 for San Diego State. The Runnin' Rebels are 0-5 ATS in their last five games overall.

Exposing The Top 25: Where The Polls Went Wrong

Each week throughout the college basketball season, Covers Expert Jesse Schule will dissect the new Top 25 rankings, looking for betting value. He'll showcase the most overrated team, along with the most underrated ranked team, and an unranked squad that he feels should be in the Top 25.

Most Underrated Top 25 Team - Minnesota Golden Gophers (15-2 SU, 11-4 ATS)

The Golden Gophers took an 11-game winning streak into Indiana when they faced the Hoosiers Saturday, and while the streak came to an end, they did give Indiana a run for its money. The Gophers have been a good bet all year. In fact, their record ATS is the best of any team in the Top 25.

They have played five ranked teams this season and have won three of those five games. Their only two losses came against Duke and Indiana, and both those teams have been ranked in the top spot in the country at some point during the season. Minnesota will be in danger of losing a third consecutive game as its host No. 3 Michigan Thursday.

Most Overrated Top 25 Team - Wichita State Shockers (15-2, 8-6 ATS)

The Shockers have an impressive record at 15-2 to start the season. But when you look at their opponents so far, it soon becomes apparent that they haven't really played anybody. They have taken advantage of an easy schedule, without playing a ranked opponent. They lost their last game at home to the Evansville Purple Aces by a score of 71-67.

They will take on Illinois State Wednesday, before playing No. 12 Creighton this weekend. It will mark the first time that either team has faced a Top 25 opponent. It's safe to assume that the loser of this meeting will be dropped from the rankings next week.

Unranked Team That Should Be Ranked – Oregon Ducks (14-2, 8-6 ATS)

The Ducks recently ended the Arizona Wildcats’ unbeaten run to start the season, winning 70-66 at home. The victory marked their second win over a Top-25 opponent this year, as they beat UNLV by a score of 83-79 in Las Vegas back in November. The Ducks are still unbeaten at home, with a record of 12-0 this season, and winners of 18 in a row dating back to last season.

They head out on the road Thursday to take on Pac-12 rivals USC and then they face an even tougher task versus UCLA in California over the weekend. While the game against UCLA is Oregon’s only meeting with a Top-25 team for the remainder of the season, it isn't as though their schedule is going to be easy. The Ducks will play home-and-home sets against Colorado, Utah, Cal and the Washington Huskies.

See Spot. See Spot Bet: This Week's Best Spot Bet Opportunities

Spot bets are a classic handicapping practice that have proven profitable no matter what sport you’re betting. Whether it’s a team looking past this week’s opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots.

        Letdown Spot

The Philadelphia Flyers rekindle their state rivalry on opening night of the condensed NHL schedule, hosting the Pittsburgh Penguins Saturday. Philadelphia embarrassed Pittsburgh in the playoffs last year and will be chomping at the bit to get another shot at the Pens.

Following that home opener, the Flyers go east to play the Buffalo Sabres Sunday – not quite the hate-fueled rivalry they share with Pittsburgh. Expect an opening-night hangover and some rusty skates from Philly while the Sabres’ hockey-starved crowd will be jacked up for their first game of the year.

        Lookahead Spot

The Big Ten is the cream of the college hoops crop. The conference has six teams in the Top 25 including Michigan State, which has a showdown versus No. 11 Ohio State Saturday. But before Sparty hosts OSU, Michigan State visits Penn State Wednesday.

The Spartans have a checkered past with the Nittany Lions, with the two programs trading wins and losses in the last eight meetings. Penn State has gone 4-3-1 ATS in those games and are 3-1-1 ATS in its last five home games versus MSU.

        Schedule Spot

The Houston Rockets better have plenty of fuel in the tank. With an upcoming road trip – and a stretch of four games in five nights – Houston could be sucking fumes come the weekend. The Rockets host the Los Angeles Clippers Tuesday before hitting the bricks on a four-game away swing.

The trip starts in Dallas Wednesday, then to Indiana Friday, at Minnesota Saturday and finishes in Charlotte on Monday Jan. 21. Houston has been terrific at home but is 7-11 SU and 8-9-1 ATS away from the Toyota Center. The Rockets, the NBA’s top scoring team, are averaging 101.7 points on the road compared to 108.9 at home.

Trouble Brewing With Heat Cooling Off on the Road

The Miami Heat are still in control of the Southeast Division, but all is not well in South Beach right now and bettors should take notice.

Dwyane Wade found himself on the pine in the fourth quarter of Monday’s loss to Utah and Chris Bosh only saw 40 seconds of action in the last 16 minutes of the game. Coach Erik Spoelstra decided to play LeBron James with four bench players late in an attempt to inspire a comeback.

“I don’t know. I just stay ready,” Wade told reporters after the game. “Coach makes the calls. I’m just a player.” And Bosh recently went on the record saying the Heat weren’t doing enough to ride players with “hot hands.”

Miami has failed to cover in three of its last four games and eight of its last 10. When taking a look at the Heat’s road ATS numbers, the picture becomes even more grim. Miami is just 6-11 ATS away from South Beach and is in the midst of a West Coast swing that has the squad visiting six cities in nine days. The Heat have two stops remaining on the trip, including a highly anticipated matchup with the Los Angeles Lakers Thursday. It will be the second game of a back-to-back for Miami, which visits Golden State Wednesday.

The Lakers applied the brakes on a six-game slide at Cleveland and will try to build some momentum Tuesday night when they host Milwaukee. You can bet Los Angeles will look at the upcoming matchup with Miami as a potential game that could turn its season around.

              WINNING POINTS

              COLLEGE BASKETBALL

              Wednesday, January 16

              LaSalle* over Dayton by 5
Temple over George Washington* by 6

              **PREFERRED
Maryland* over North Carolina State by 10
Not covering in a road win at Boston College was the foreshadowing for losing this
one outright for NC State, because Maryland is a better defensive team that Boston
              College.
              MARYLAND, 78-68.

              Butler* over Richmond by 11

              **PREFERRED
              Pittsburgh over Villanova* by 11
They were going to play the overtime game as long as it took for Villanova to beat St.
John’s in the Wildcats’ Big East home opener. But now that that’s over with, this one
probably can’t end soon enough for the Wildcats, who have neither the better offense
nor the better defense than the Panthers. What’s left?
              PITTSBURGH, 76-65.

              Georgetown* over Providence by 15
Miami-FL over Boston College* by 8

Georgia State* over William & Mary by 9
Old Dominion over NC-Wilmington* by 2

              Northeastern* over Hofstra by 18
No surprise if Hofstra lands in the 40s after 40 minutes.
              NORTHEASTERN, 65-47.

              Delaware* over Towson by 5

Akron* over Ball State by 28
Ball State was worried about a size mismatch when they hosted Indiana State, for
Pete’s sake. On the road against Akron? Forget about it!
              AKRON, 72-44.

Western Michigan* over Toledo by 6
Miami-OH* over Bowling Green by 2

SMU* over Southern Miss by 1
No size issues for the SMUs, so we’re still looking favorably upon them.
              SMU, 69-68.

LSU* over South Carolina by 9

              Missouri* over Georgia by 28
Oh, my. This cannot possibly go well for Georgia and their sub-par so-far guards, can
              it?
              MISSOURI, 79-51.

              NBA BASKETBALL

              Wednesday, January 16

              Indiana over *Orlando by 4
Orlando was just 4-10 in its last 14 home games and is playing for the first time after
four consecutive road contests. Indiana, however, is in action for the fourth time in
five days and second in two nights.
              INDIANA 92-88.

              *Toronto over Chicago by 1
Chicago had covered eight of its first 14 road matchups, but lacks the Raptors’ point
guard depth with Derrick Rose out.
              TORONTO 97-96.

              *Atlanta over Brooklyn by 5
Atlanta’s bench play has regressed, Josh Smith hasn’t been 100 percent and the Hawks
were 5-13-1 ATS during their last 19 games through Jan. 10. The Nets, though, were
              2-5 ATS with no rest.
              ATLANTA 101-96.

*Boston over New Orleans by 8
Look for a bit of a Boston surge as its schedule has eased and underrated defensive
              whiz Avery Bradley is back.
              BOSTON 100-92.

*Oklahoma City over Denver by 7
The Thunder return home from a three-game West Coast trip. But after this matchup,
the Thunder go back on the highway for six more games. Oklahoma City had covered
12 of its first 20 home contests.
              OKLAHOMA CITY 112-105.

              *Dallas over Houston by 1
Houston is on a back-to-back having hosted the Clippers last night. Dallas, though,
has already suffered 10 losses by 19 or more points and Dirk Nowitzki was shooting a
career-low from the floor since returning from knee surgery.
              DALLAS 107-106.

              **PREFERRED
*San Antonio over Memphis by 15
The Spurs had covered a remarkable 72 percent of the time during their last 57 home

Hawks Faves Wednesday Despite Recent Offensive Struggles

The Atlanta Hawks are suffering from a serious power outage.

Monday night’s historically ugly 97-58 loss to the Chicago Bulls is not the way Hawks wanted to be perceived ahead of former franchise player Joe Johnson’s return to Atlanta Wednesday.

Johnson carried the load offensively for the Hawks, averaging nearly 21 points per game over the last seven seasons, but he was dealt to the Brooklyn Nets this past summer. The loss of Johnson has left a gaping hole in Atlanta’s offensive attack, a weakness that has been exposed recently.

Losers of seven of their last nine games, the Hawks (21-16 SU) are plummeting down the Eastern Conference standings. Atlanta has dropped six of its last seven overall (1-6 ATS) and is averaging a paltry 85 points per game during the skid - more than 10 points lower than its season average (95.4). The lack of buckets has also resulted in a 2-5 O/U record during that span.

Josh Smith is the team’s leading scorer with a mediocre 16.5 points per game, more than two points lower than his 18.8 average last season with Johnson in the lineup.

The Hawks picked up Louis Williams in the summer to add some punch off the bench and he hasn’t disappointed, averaging over 14 points. But the guard has only started in nine games and lacks the game-changing ability that Johnson brought to the table during his tenure in Atlanta.

Anthony Morrow, who was acquired in the Johnson deal, has been sidelined with a hip injury since Dec. 28, further adding to the team’s offensive drought.

Despite their recent woes, the Hawks are listed as early 3.5-point favorites with the total set at 190. Prior to action Tuesday, Atlanta is tied with Charlotte as the worst bet in the NBA at 14-22-1 ATS.
