Heat at Pacers: What Bettors Need to Know

Miami Heat at Indiana Pacers (+2.5, 182.5)

The Indiana Pacers will put their 12-game home win streak to the test when they host the Miami Heat on Friday in a matchup of two of the top four teams in the Eastern Conference. The Pacers ran their home mark to 17-3 with a 98-79 win over Detroit on Wednesday, and they'll try to take down the Heat for the second time during their string of home victories that dates to Dec. 7.

The Heat have split the first two games of a four-game road trip. They rebounded from a double-overtime loss at Boston to blow out Brooklyn 105-85 on Wednesday and have won five of their last six to lay claim to the top spot in the Eastern Conference. It's the second of three meetings, with Indiana having won the first 87-77 at home Jan. 8.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN, Sun Sports (Miami), Fox Sports Indiana

ABOUT THE HEAT (29-13, 21-21-0 ATS): LeBron James is enjoying another MVP-caliber season, leading the team in scoring (26.5), rebounds (8.3) and assists (7.1) with support from the rest of the "Big Three" - Dwyane Wade (20.7 points, 4.6 assists) and Chris Bosh (17.2 points, 7.4 rebounds). That trio makes Miami a dominant offensive team, but the Heat has struggled at times at the defensive end and ranks last in the league in rebounding. In search of help on the boards, Miami signed forward Chris Andersen to a second 10-day contract on Wednesday and signed forward Jarvis Varnado for the remainder of the season.

ABOUT THE PACERS (27-19, 24-22-0 ATS): After a three-game losing streak in which its defense lapsed, Indiana returned to form against the Pistons. The Pacers lead the league in opponents' field-goal percentage (41.9) and rank second in points allowed per game (89.9). All-Star Paul George (17.4 points, 7.7 rebounds) leads the team in scoring, but the Pacers get good balance with David West (16.7 points, 7.7 rebounds), George Hill (14.6 points, 4.9 assists) and Roy Hibbert (10 points, 8.3 rebounds) also averaging double digits. Lance Stephenson recorded the first double-double of his career with 12 points and a career-high 11 rebounds against the Pistons before leaving the game with a sprained left ankle.

          TRENDS:

          * Underdog is 27-13-1 ATS in the last 41 meetings.
          * Heat are 1-6 ATS in their last seven vs. NBA Central.
          * Pacers are 5-11 ATS in their last 16 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
          * Over is 7-3 in Heat last 10 vs. NBA Central.
          * Under is 19-6-1 in Pacers last 26 vs. Eastern Conference.

          BUZZER BEATERS:

          1. Miami has won nine games this season after trailing in the fourth quarter, including five in which it trailed by at least seven points in the final period.

          2. The Pacers are 21-3 when holding opponents under 90 points and 22-3 when leading after three quarters.

          3. James has scored in double figures in 461 consecutive games, including all 183 he has played for the Heat.

            DAVID BANKS

            Miami Heat vs. Indiana Pacers
The Miami Heat (29-13, 21-21 ATS) are coming off of a 20-point statement
win over the Nets in Brooklyn, and they now have revenge as a motive when they
visit the Indiana Pacers (27-19, 24-22 ATS) Friday at Bankers Life
Fieldhouse in Indianapolis at 7:00 ET on ESPN. The Heat were held to a season low
point total the first time these teams met this season in an 87-77 loss right
here in this building on January 8th. The Pacers meanwhile just snapped a
three-game losing streak on Wednesday by beating the reeling Detroit Pistons.

The Heat do not always show up for during the regular season, and a
noticeable drop-off in defensive intensity compared to last season is a key reason
why Miami is just a .500 team against the spread this season, although that
record does not vary too much from the ATS records the first two seasons
that LeBron James has played at South Beach. The offense has been fine as the
Heat rank fifth in the NBA in scoring at 102.7 points per game, and they lead
the league in field goal percentage and are second in three-point shooting.
The defense has been spotty however, ranking 12th in points against at 96.7
per game. The Heat did show up in the 105-85 win over what had been a hot
Nets team on Wednesday, shooting a blazing 51.8 percent from the field
including an incredible 57.9 percent from beyond the three-point arc (11-for-19)
while holding Brooklyn to only 44.9 percent shooting. Memories of their first
trip to Indianapolis should be enough to spur the Heat to another all out
effort here vs. an Indiana team that had the Heat on the ropes during the
            playoffs last season.

The Pacers have cooled off after leading the Central Division for a while
as they now find themselves in second place at 1 games behind the Chicago
Bulls, Indiana lost the last three games of a just completed Western
Conference road trip, and it did not play very well in its first game back home
either but was fortunate to be facing the 17-29 Pistons while coming away with
the 98-79 victory. The Pacers do continue to play great defense, ranking
second in the NBA in points against at a scant 89.9 per game while leading the
league in both field goal percentage against and three-point defense. However,
a determined Heat team that is averaging 107.0 points over the last five
games may not be impressed and even if Miami scores around 90 points, it could
be enough to win this game as long as the Miami defense comes to play. That
is because Indiana ranks second to last in the NBA in points scored at 91.8
per game, and the Pacers are in danger of dropping to last in that category
considering how hot the last place Washington Wizards have been lately.

The Pacers have been rather erratic as of late as they are 1-5 ATS in their
last six games following a straight up win. Indiana is also 4-9 ATS in its
last 13 games vs. Southeast Division teams.

            Pick: MIAMI HEAT-2.5

5 Unit Play Take #810 Brooklyn -3 over Chicago (7:30pm est):

The Brooklyn Nets were fired up for their last game as they played host to the defending champion Miami Heat in that contest. The Nets felt this was a big measuring stick game for them with and where they were overall as a basketball team. The end result was an ugly and very disappointing blowout defeat by 20 points in that game. After the game there were a lot of Nets players frustrated by the outcome and most questioned if this team was good enough to compete against the big boys in the league. Expect maximum effort and intensity from Brooklyn here in this one as they will get their chance too quickly redeem themselves and wipe away those ugly feelings from the Miami loss. Add in the fact this is a Friday night home crowd which is usually the most intense type of home crowds in the NBA. Also the Nets will have the next three days off following this contest here as well.

You can't expect an NBA team to bring it every night of the season as it's just not realistic for teams to come with the needed energy nightly. This looks to be a soft spot in the schedule here for the Bulls in this one. First off they know they are getting a wounded animal with the Nets here in this one. Next up the Bulls are coming off a big win last game as they wanted to badly quiet down a team they felt was disrespecting them of late, the Milwaukee Bucks. They have won five of their last six games and eight of their previous ten coming into this one tonight. This is the 2nd game in a long stretch of road contests against some very tough competition over the next few weeks. In fact they have to turn right back around and play the Atlanta Hawks tomorrow and the Pacers on Monday before heading out west. If ever there was a lay down spot, it's probably here in this game for Chicago. The Bulls have been great away from home this season but also keep in mind they have been very fortunate to have played a league low 19 road contests thus far this season. Lastly the Bulls look like they will also be without one of their top players in Carlos Boozer in this one also, a big loss to go along with Derrick Rose still being out of their lineup. No team can withstand missing their two bets players for very long in the NBA.

Play Brooklyn in this one tonight. What a weekend of winners I have in store and it starts off Saturday in CBB action. I had three perfect 3-0 or better Saturday's in college hoops action in the month of January and for the month overall I went 11-3 in Saturday CBB betting action. With such a huge slate of games on tap the Bookmakers just don't stand a chance against a hard working college hoops handicapper. I have rattled off nearly 70 percent winners in CBB the last three weeks and have really took off in conference season this year. Hard at work right now looking for another big Saturday of winners in college hoops. The weekend caps off Sunday with the big game, the Super Bowl and also my biggest play of the NFL season this year as well. With so much square public money being bet into this game I feel that one side offers extreme value in this game. I have studied this game for the past few weeks and feel one team has a decisive edge in this contest in the important areas of the game. I have made my clients money in seven of the last nine weeks in football action and have went 6-1 the past two year's betting the NFL post-season. This game is the best one of those past seven games in my estimation and I look to put an exclamation point on what has been a great end to this football season.

                                3-Unit Play. Take #803 Miami (-2) over Indiana (7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 1)
Don't piss off LeBron James and the Heat. Reggie Evans was poking James with a stick this week, talking about how James and the Heat didn't impress him by winning a title in a strike-shortened season. The Heat promptly blew Brooklyn out by 20 and scored 105 points. I think that Evans' comment was exactly what Miami needed to get things going after kind of going through the motions over the last month. This team knows that it isn't going to win a championship in January and they are just kind of coasting. But having another player question their legitimacy and really stir their competitiveness is a bad idea for the rest of the league. That brings us to today's game. The Pacers routed the Heat in their last meeting. And since it was just a few weeks ago it is still fresh in Miami's mind. That loss came right at the front of a long road trip by Miami and they just weren't prepared. That was also a big motivational game for the Pacers, who were going for revenge on Miami for knocking them out of the playoffs. But now it is Miami that has the motivational edge. Not only are they still smarting from Evans' comments but they also are in a rare revenge spot of their own. Miami also wants to snap Indiana's 12-game home winning streak while denying the Pacers a shot to tie them for the best home record in the East.
And I think that is going to lead to offense. There were just 164 points scored in that first meeting back on Jan. 8. But these are professionals and they will make adjustments. When they met in the playoffs Miami scored 105, 115, and 101 points in the last three games after three low-scoring openers. They adjusted. The Heat have topped 100 points in three of their last four games and topped 99 points in five of eight, including games with 110, 124 and 128 points. Indiana has been involved in some high scoring games as well, with one team scoring 100 points or more in four of their last six and five of their last eight. They are still a live home dog and will put up a fight. But I think that we see plenty of scoring in this one and both teams will score at least 90. I'll call for this one to be 99-94 for the Heat and we will take the cash on both sides.

                                1-Unit Play. Take #810 Brooklyn (-3) over Chicago (7:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 1)

                                5-Unit Play. Take #814 Philadelphia (-6) over Sacramento (7:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 1)
This is a bad Kings basketball team. They were blown out in Boston the other night and I think they are going to be blown out in this game here. This team is on a long road trip and they are just 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games overall. The Kings lost by 18 at Boston and lost by 28 at Denver to start their road trip. They also have a 9-point loss at New Orleans and a 16-point loss at Memphis lately. Philadelphia has gone 4-2 ATS in its last six games and they look better than they have. Philadelphia has dominated this series and is 8-2 ATS in the last 10 meetings. The Sixers have covered seven of eight meetings and are 5-2 ATS at home against the Kings. Sacramento is just 2-11-1 ATS in its last 14 games overall. This franchise has a lot of issues. And they will be in trouble again tonight.
                                3-Unit Play. Take #804 Indiana (+2.5) over Miami (7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 1)
I like the home underdog in this one. The Pacers have revenge in this game for being knocked out of the playoffs by the Heat. Indiana won at home by 10 points in the first meeting this year. I think they are going to do the same thing here. The public is going to load up on the Heat with such a short line. But I know better. Take the points.

                                2 Unit Play. Take 2551 Ottawa +105 over Carolina (7:05 p.m., Friday February 1)
The Ottawa Senators will look to continue their hot start when they travel to take on the Carolina Hurricanes tonight at the RBC Center in Raleigh. Ottawa, who has posted a 5-1-1 record is one of the highest scoring teams in the league this year with 24 goals while Carolina has struggled a bit out of the gate, going just 2-3-0. They have also had their troubles putting the puck in the net. scoring just 14 times on the season. Craig Anderson is expected to once again be between the pipes tonight for the Senators. He has been the best goalie in the league this season, posting a 5-0-1 record with a 0.99 GAA and .967 save %. He will be opposed by Cam Ward, who will be in goal for Carolina. Ward, a former playoff MVP has really struggled out of the gate this season, going just 1-3-0 with a 4.51 GAA and .861 save %. Ottawa, who has been a bit of a surprise so far this season has been very good in the spot they are in here tonight against Carolina. They are 4-1 in their last 5 games against teams from the Southeast Division and have won 9 of their last 11 after scoring 5 goals or more in their previous contest. Carolina, who was expected to make the playoffs when the season started has been bad in the situation they find themselves in this evening against Ottawa. They are just 17-39 after allowing 5 goals or more in their previous game and have lost 4 of their last 5 when playing a game with 3 or more days of rest. Pair that with the fact that the Senators are 4-1 in their last 5 games against teams with a losing record and we'll take the small plus price on the road team to get the win and get us back on track in the NHL.
