Bank shots: NBA betting news and notes

Each week, we look back on the NBA betting scene and give you the best –and worst – basketball bets, as well as some spots to keep an eye on with the upcoming schedule.

Stats and records as of Feb. 3.

          Hottest ATS

Dallas Mavericks (2-2 SU, 4-0 ATS)

The Mavs made some serious coin this week, covering in four straight including three on the road. Dallas was an underdog in all three of those games, improving to 16-10 ATS away from home. The Mavericks will be road dogs again in Oklahoma City Monday, especially if Dirk Nowitzki misses another game.

          Coldest ATS

Orlando Magic (0-5 SU, 1-4 ATS)

Tough week for the Magic, playing five games in seven nights. Orlando took four of those five losses away from home, but did manage to salvage a cover in Saturday’s 107-98 loss at Milwaukee. The Magic, who are actually 13-9-1 ATS as guests, close out a five-game road swing in Philadelphia Monday.

          Best over

          New Orleans Hornets (1-4 SU, 4-1 over/under)

The soon-to-be Pelicans suffered away from New Orleans last week. The Hornets dropped four of five on the road, allowing an average of over 105 points per game in that stretch. New Orleans had a hard time keeping up with star guard Eric Gordon slowed by a nagging knee injury. He’s questionable versus the Suns at home Wednesday.

          Best under

          Washington Wizards (0-4, 0-4 over/under)

The Wizards have a hard enough time scoring on their own, let alone matching up with some of the NBA’s better defensive squads. Washington played under the number in all four games last week, visiting San Antonio, Memphis and Philadelphia. It also stayed below the total versus Sacramento, which posted an identical 0-4 over/under mark last week.

          Scouting the schedule

Both the Lakers and Clippers are on extended road trips thanks to the Grammy Awards taking over the Staples Center. The Lakers wrap up a seven-game swing at Detroit, Brookly, Boston and Miami while the Clippers visit Washington, Orlando, Miami and New York. The Los Angeles teams are a combined 18-26-1 ATS on the road as of Sunday.

NCAAB game of the day: Notre Dame at Syracuse

            Notre Dame at Syracuse (-9.5)

Syracuse aims to keep its losing streak from reaching three games when it hosts Notre Dame on Monday. The No. 6 Orange had been sailing along and won their first six Big East games before losing back-to-back outings to Villanova and Pittsburgh. The loss to the Panthers on Saturday knocked Syracuse out of first place in the Big East. The Orange are now a half-game behind Marquette. Notre Dame is in a three-way tie for third.

The Fighting Irish can bolster their NCAA tournament resume with a road win against the Orange. Notre Dame struggled on the road Saturday and had to go overtime to defeat lowly DePaul. The Fighting Irish have won three consecutive games overall. Syracuse is 13-0 at home with 10 of the victories coming by 20 or more points. The Orange have a 35-game homecourt winning streak that is the longest in the nation but had to score the final five points to squeak past Cincinnati 57-55 in their most-recent contest at the Carrier Dome.

            TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT NOTRE DAME (18-4, 6-3 Big East): Senior forward Jack Cooley continued his huge season with 26 points and 16 rebounds in the victory over DePaul. Cooley fell one point shy of tying his career-best output and did match his season-best for rebounding. He has grabbed 15 or more rebounds five times in his career and has recorded 14 double-doubles this season. Cooley leads the Fighting Irish in both scoring (15) and rebounding (11.3). Junior guard Jerian Grant averages 12.6 points and junior guard Eric Atkins chips in 11.8. Notre Dame commits just 10.3 turnovers per game and has had fewer than 10 miscues in six of its nine Big East contests.

ABOUT SYRACUSE (18-3, 6-2): The offense stagnates when both senior Brandon Triche and sophomore Michael Carter-Williams are struggling with their shots in the same game. The two guards were a combined 7-of-26 from the field – including 1-for-10 from 3-point range – in the loss to Pittsburgh. “We missed a lot of shots,” Carter-Williams said afterwards. “I was like 3-for-12. Brandon didn’t shoot the ball great. So if me and him don’t shoot the ball good, we’re going to lose.” Triche averages a team-high 14.9 points while Carter-Williams averages 12.6 points and 8.6 assists. Junior forward C.J. Fair scored 20 points against the Panthers and averages 13.7 points and team-leading seven rebounds.

            TRENDS:

            * Orange are 1-5 ATS in their last six games overall.
            * Fighting Irish are 1-5 ATS in their last six games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record.
            * Home team is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings.
            * Favorite is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings.

            TIP-INS:

            1. Notre Dame won last season’s lone meeting to break a three-game losing streak against Syracuse.

            2. Orange starting C DaJuan Coleman will miss his second game after recent knee surgery.

            3. Fighting Irish coach Mike Brey has 139 Big East wins and is tied with former St. John’s coach Louie Carnesecca for fourth-most in conference history.

Pucking the trends: This week's best NHL bets

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in the National Hockey League.

For the week of Jan. 27-Feb. 2. All stats are prior to Sunday's action.

              Hot team

              San Jose Sharks (3-0-0-1 SU)

The Sharks are undefeated in regulation in their first eight games, suffering their only loss in a shootout to Nashville Saturday. San Jose has skated to a 5-3 mark on the puckline during that stretch. Patrick Marleau and Joe Thornton are among the league leaders with 14 points each and Antii Niemi has a league-best six wins and a miniscule 1.80 GAA. The Sharks visit the Ducks Monday before hosting the Blackhawks and Coyotes later in the week.

              Cold team

              New Jersey Devils (0-4 SU)

Everyone expected the Devils to take a step back after the departure of Zach Parise and they haven’t disappointed bettors on the moneyline. Four of New Jersey’s last five games have gone to either overtime or a shootout and the Devils have come out on the losing end in four of those contests. New Jersey visits the New York Islanders Sunday before hosting the Rangers, Lightning and Penguins later in the week.

              Best over play

              Montreal Canadiens (4-0 over/under)

The Habs have been one of the surprise teams of the young NHL season so far. The return of stud defenseman P.K. Subban didn’t disrupt any of the team’s chemistry in their most recent 6-1 triumph over Buffalo. Montreal has scored four goals or more in five of its first seven games, leading to an impressive 4-0 O/U mark last week. The Canadiens host the Senators Sunday afternoon and then get a nice break before hosting the Bruins Wednesday night.

              Best under play

              Chicago Blackhawks (0-4 over/under)

Goaltending has been an issue for the Blackhawks over the past few seasons, but it certainly hasn’t been a hindrance thus far. The goaltending duo of Corey Crawford and Ray Emery have been impressive early on, holding opponents to 1.7 goals per game during Chicago’s seven-game under streak. The Blackhawks have three games remaining on their current road trip with stops in San Jose, Phoenix and Nashville this week.

              Surveying the schedule:

-The Carolina Hurricanes continue their season-long six-game road trip Monday in Toronto. The Hurricanes fell 5-3 Saturday to Philadelphia in the first contest of the road swing and have allowed a generous 3.3 goals per game so far (24th in the league).

-The Tampa Bay Lightning have skated to an impressive 6-2 start to the campaign but have only played two road games. The Lightning play four tough road games this week, including a tough back-to-back in Boston and New York (Rangers).
