NBA Game Of The Week

Grizzlies (-14) over Magic
8:00 PM -- FedEx Forum
NBA Game Of The Week
MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES (35-18) -14 over Orlando Magic (15-39)
Prediction: Grizzlies by 21-22
Comments: This would better be billed The NBA Mess Game of the Year because that is just what the Orlando Magic are—a giant non-competitive disaster that just keeps getting worse. Orlando is 1-15 in its last 16 games, 3-26 in its last 29 and has dropped nine straight on the road—and they just keep adding to their woes. Two days ago they traded their best player and team leader, J.J. Reddick (15.1 points per game), to Milwaukee. Being without him is certainly going to hurt and the Magic will also be minus point guard Jameer Nelson (14.47 points, 3.79 rebounds and 7.37 assists per game) who is out with a strained tendon in his left knee. There is simply no reason to expect this game to be close as Memphis goes for its sixth straight win.

Butler (-3) over Saint Louis
7:00 PM -- Hinkle Fieldhouse
BUTLER (22-5) -3 over Saint Louis (20-5)
Prediction: Butler by 6-7
Comments: Revenge is the name of the game in this battle for first place in the Atlantic Ten Conference. The first time these two outstanding teams played, in St. Louis three weeks ago, the Billikens buried Butler, 75-58, setting the stage for this game. Butler is relatively healthy for the first time in a month and is ready to bring its “A” game—and that should be enough to get it done in what figures to be a game of disciplined offense and lock-down defense. Saint Louis, which is going for its ninth straight win, leads the Atlantic Ten in defense, giving up just 57.9 points in conference games, and Butler has held three of its last five opponents to 49, 56 and 58 points. When Saint Louis won the first game, it did so by shooting 50.0 from the floor and getting 26 points off 23 Butler turnovers. It was simply an off night for Butler and the Bulldogs are primed to not let those things happen again tonight. For the record, the 23 Butler turnovers were the most for the team in the last 10 years. Nothing will come easy for either team in this game but all the factors point to a Butler win and cover on a home court where it is 13-1 this season.

Akron (-7) over North Dakota St
7:00 PM -- James A. Rhodes Arena
AKRON (21-4) -7 over North Dakota State (20-7)
Prediction: Akron by 10-11
Comments: Akron, the 9th youngest team of the 347 playing NCAA Division I basketball, got off to a 4-4 start and then put it altogether in rather stunning fashion. When the Zips take the floor tonight in this bracket-buster game with North Dakota State of the under-rated Summit League they will be going for their 18th straight win and as impressive as that sounds, my figures say the best is yet to come. With that said, I do not think North Dakota State will be a pushover but my analysis says Akron is too athletic and quick for the visiting Bison. Akron has the better plays, has proved itself against better competition and is a perfect 13-0 at home. The win and cover should belong to Akron which is looking to impress the NCAA selection committee.

Stephen F Austin (+2½) over Long Beach State
9:00 PM -- Walter Pyramid
Stephen F. Austin State (22-3) +2½ over LONG BEACH STATE (17-9)
Prediction: Stephen F. Austin by 5-6
Comments: I just have a gut feeling Long Beach State is in for a long night—in reality 40 minutes of pure hell against the best defensive team in the nation. Stephen F. Austin has long been known for its crippling defense and has given up an average of but 49.7 points per game this season—best of 347 NCAA Division I teams. It worked for the Lumberjacks in a 56-55 win at Oklahoma and with a 57-41 victory at Tulsa earlier this season and it should work tonight against an under-achieving Long Beach State team—and I say that knowing the 49ers are 12-1 in their last 13 games. Early in the season I put Long Beach State on a list of teams to bet once they got the toughest part of the schedule behind them—and the 49ers early schedule was brutal, with losses coming at UCLA, Ohio State, Syracuse, Arizona, North Carolina and USC. I reason that once Long Beach State was past this, and took a major drop in class, that it would over-power a schedule of much weaker opponents. The 49ers have won but they are by no means over-powering. My money says they will get ambushed tonight on a court where they are 11-2 this season.
1-1 day on Thursday after a nice 3-0 Sweep on Wednesday, 4 of 5 winning days 8-2 run including the 5* GOTW Winner yesterday on the Under in the Ohio State/Wisconsin game.
