UFC 161 betting: MMA bettors roll dice on Evans' motivation
By MMAODDSBREAKER
UFC 161: Rashad Evans (-125) vs. Dan Henderson (+105)
Rashad Evans and Dan Henderson tangle in a high-profile, three-round light heavyweight main event at UFC 161 Saturday night.
Evans (17-3-1) is the former UFC light heavyweight champion and is one of the best pound-for-pound mixed martial artists in the world. But he’s coming off an extremely disappointing decision loss to Antonio Rogerio Nogueria at UFC 156 and it’s led many to question his motivation in the sport.
Still, the 33 year old has all the makings of an elite fighter: Great wrestling, knockout power, speed, athleticism. He should be the favorite in almost every fight he has.
Against Henderson, Evans is going up against another solid wrestler, but one with some of the most vicious knockout power the sport has ever seen. Evans will need to use his takedowns and get this fight to the ground because it’s not worth taking the risk of standing with a guy like Henderson.
Henderson (29-9) is an MMA legend. The 42 year old is coming off a disappointing split decision loss to Lyoto Machida at UFC 157 but many thought that Henderson deserved to win that stinker on the strength of his aggressiveness.
Had he won that decision, Henderson would be on a five-fight win streak right now and we’d all be talking about him as the next challenger to Jon Jones. Now, Henderson has to beat Evans to prove he deserves that crack at the title. He must keep this fight upright and get the knockout because his entire career is likely depending on it.
If Evans is motivated to get back into the win column, then this is fight to lose. He’s much younger, faster, and more athletic than Henderson. Unless he gets caught with the “H-bomb” - a very real possibility – he can use his wrestling advantage to get the takedowns and win rounds on the judges’ scorecards. But it all depends on Evans’ motivation.Comment

NBA Finals Game 5 opens as a pick'em, Wade's MVP odds move
The Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs are trading bombs like heavyweight fighters in the NBA Finals. Following the Spurs’ one-sided victory in Game 3, the Heat countered with a 109-93 win as 1-point road favorites in Game 4 Thursday.
With the series tied 2-2, and one more game in San Antonio before swinging back to South Beach for the final two games if need, oddsmakers have adjusted Miami to a -260 favorite with San Antonio as a +210 underdog.
The spread for Game 5 Sunday opened as a pick’em but the line is on the move and is now Spurs +1.
Oddsmakers opened with the total set at 187 points and has moved to 187.5. The Spurs and Heat have combined for a 2-2 over/under record in the first four games of the NBA Finals.
Odds have also shifted for the NBA Finals MVP Award. LeBron James is the favorite to win the Bill Russell Trophy at -250 but teammate Dwyane Wade, who exploded for 32 points in Game 4, is presenting solid value at +700 after being as high as +2,000 at some books heading into Game 3. San Antonio PG Tony Parker is listed at +400 while veteran power forward Tim Duncan is +450.Comment

Blackhawks Seek 2-0 Series Lead Saturday
"Stanley Cup Finals"
Game 2 - Chicago leads series 1-0
Puck Drops: Saturday, 8:05 p.m. ET
Line: Chicago -150, Boston +140, Total: 5
After a triple-overtime loss to start the series, the Bruins will try to even up the Stanley Cup Finals with the Blackhawks on Saturday night. They could be short-handed though, as star C Nathan Horton's status for Game 2 is uncertain because of an upper body injury.
Chicago's Andrew Shaw was the hero in Game 1, as it was his knee that deflected the puck in the back of Boston's net at 12:08 of the third overtime period. This was the Blackhawks' third unanswered goal to finally end a game that the Bruins led 3-1 with 12 minutes left in regulation. Although Chicago outshot Boston 63-54, several other statistics were nearly even. Both clubs had three power-play opportunities, the Blackhawks had only two more hits (61-59), and the Bruins won just two more faceoffs (58-56). The loss snapped Boston's five-game win streak, but the B's are still 9-2 in their past 11 games. Chicago is now 8-1 in its past nine games overall, and 10-1 at home in the playoffs. The Blackhawks are also 21-4 when coming off a one-goal win this season, while the Bruins are 0-6 on the road after a one-goal loss. However, Chicago has to be the more tired team having just played two straight multi-overtime games, and the B's will be eager for redemption after relinquishing a pair of two-goal leads, a rare mistake for such a strong defensive team.
Expect BOSTON to tie up the series on Saturday in a low-scoring affair.
This telling FoxSheets trend also likes the Bruins to win:
BOSTON is 35-16 ATS (+16.0 Units) against explosive offensive teams - scoring 3+ goals/game - 2nd half of the season over the last 3 seasons.
The average score was BOSTON 3.3, OPPONENT 2.1 - (Rating = 1*).
Bruins netminder Tuukka Rask (12-5, 1.78 GAA, .942 Sv Pct. in playoffs) turned away 59 of the 63 shots he faced on Wednesday (.937 Sv Pct), but it wasn't enough to prevent his team from dropping to a 5-3 playoff record on the road. LW Milan Lucic (5 G, 11 A, +14 rating in playoffs) was the offensive star for Boston with two goals and an assist, while C David Krejci had two assists to increase his NHL playoff-high points to 23 (9 G, 14 A). Krejci's +15 rating in the postseason ranks second behind teammate RW Nathan Horton (+22 rating), who logged just 22:28 in Game 1 before getting injured. Horton's potential absence would definitely be felt, considering he has seven goals (T-4th in league) and 18 points (2nd in NHL) in the 2013 playoffs. Other standouts for the Bruins in Game 1 included C Patrice Bergeron (6 G, 6 A, +4 rating in playoffs), who scored a power-play goal, blocked five shots and won 66% of his faceoffs (27-of-41). D Dennis Seidenberg blocked a game-high nine shots and delivered seven hits during his team-high 48:36 of ice time, while D Andrew Ference led the game with 10 hits, and added eight blocks during his eye-popping 56 shifts (45:19 ice time).
Blackhawks goalie Corey Crawford (13-5, 1.73 GAA, .936 Sv Pct. in playoffs) had a memorable Stanley Cup Finals debut, saving 51-of-54 shots (.944 Sv Pct) in Game 1, including all 29 shots he saw after regulation. His blue-liners really helped, especially D Duncan Keith (game-high 48:40 ice time) and D Johnny Oduya (team-best seven blocked shots, game-tying goal in third period). Offensively, it wasn't the usual suspects that got the team in the win column. RW Marian Hossa (7 G, 8 A, +8 rating in playoffs), C Patrick Sharp (8 G, 6 A, +3 rating in playoffs) and RW Patrick Kane (6 G, 8 A, +3 rating in playoffs) were all tied for the team lead with 14 points during these playoffs entering Game 1. But Hossa was the only one in the trio to record a point on Wednesday, assisting on Brandon Saad's second-period goal that cut Boston's lead to 2-1. C Andrew Shaw not only tallied the game-winner, but he also assisted on Dave Bolland's third-period tally. Bolland joined Shaw as the only Blackhawks with multiple points when his deflection of Michal Rozsival's shot hit Shaw's knee for the game-winner. Shaw and LWs Bryan Bickell and Brandon Bolling each had a team-high-tying nine hits in Game 1.Comment

Bruins at Blackhawks: What bettors need to know
Boston Bruins at Chicago Blackhawks (-144, 5)
Blackhawks lead best-of-seven series 1-0.
After putting forth a thrilling triple-overtime classic in the opener of the Stanley Cup final, the Boston Bruins and Chicago Blackhawks will look to provide an encore in Game 2 on Saturday when the Original Six rivals reconvene at the United Center. Andrew Shaw scored 12:08 into the third extra session as Presidents' Trophy-winning Chicago overcame a pair of two-goal deficits to post a 4-3 triumph in the fifth-longest game in Stanley Cup final history. Shaw ended the wild affair after tallying on a double deflection - although the game was tied at 3-3 in the third period as the puck caromed off the skate of Boston defenseman Andrew Ference and into the net.
"It's those two tough bounces that went in and there's nothing you can do," said Boston's Patrice Bergeron, who was honored as the King Clancy Memorial Trophy winner on Friday. The award is presented to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice. The Bruins will need that leadership to rebound in Game 2 - unless they'll head back to Beantown in an 0-2 deficit in a Stanley Cup for the second time in three years.
TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBC, CBC, RDS
ABOUT THE BRUINS: Top-line wing Nathan Horton participated in practice on Friday and is a game-time decision for Saturday's tilt. "He's day-to-day and that's where he is," Boston coach Claude Julien said of Horton, who sustained an unspecified upper-body injury after an exchange with Chicago defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson during the first overtime in Game 1. "That's why he practiced (Friday) and we'll have to make a decision on Nate (Saturday). But it was encouraging to see him out there today, and if he feels good, he's in the lineup." Should Horton missed the contest, Tyler Seguin would likely move to the top line - as he did during the latter stages of Game 1.
ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS: Jonathan Toews was named as the Frank J. Selke Award winner, which goes to the league's best defensive forward. The Chicago captain claimed the award over finalists Bergeron and Detroit superstar Pavel Datsyuk. "To be able to go head to head with guys like that in the playoffs, and to know them from the past, you understand how much they mean to their teams and how much they contribute offensively and defensively," Toews said. Toews registered a stunning plus-28 rating in the regular season, but has mustered just one goal and set up eight others in the playoffs.
TRENDS:
* Over is 5-0 in Blackhawks’ last five Stanley Cup Finals games.
* Blackhawks are 12-3 in their last 15 Saturday games.
* Bruins are 5-1 in their last six overall.
OVERTIME
1. Boston's top line of David Krejci (NHL-leading nine goals, 14 assists), Horton (seven goals, 11 assists) and Milan Lucic (five goals, 11 assists) has combined for 21 goals and 36 assists in the postseason. Lucic tallied twice in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup final.
2. Blackhawks G Corey Crawford and Bruins G Tuukka Rask set career highs with 51 and 59 saves, respectively, in Game 1.
3. Boston yielded more goals on Wednesday versus Chicago (four) than it did in the entire Eastern Conference final against Pittsburgh (two).Comment

Confederations Cup betting: Host nation favored
The Confederations Cup is a tournament held every four years by the holders of each of the six FIFA confederations championships (UEFA, CONMEBOL, CONCACAF, CAF, AFC, OFC), plus the current World Cup Champ and the host nation.
So the 2013 version, held in Brazil and starting Saturday, will include the following:
Brazil (hosts)
Spain (UEFA/World Cup)
Japan (AFC)
Mexico (CONCACAF)
Uruguay (CONMEBOL)
Tahiti (OFC)
Italy (UEFA - qualified as Euro 2012 runners up)
Nigeria (CAF)
Here is a look at each of the eight clubs participating in the event. Odds courtesy of Bet365:
Group A
Brazil (+140)
Why bet Brazil: Brazil is the tourney fave and won the last edition of the Cup back in 2009. They will field a side that features stars such as Neymar, Lucas, Hulk and Hernanes and will no doubt play with a style and flair that only the Brazilians can.
Italy (+600)
Why bet Italy: The Italians are a good look at +600 with the talent that is on the squad list. AC Milan attack force Mario Balotelli and Stephan El Shaarawy will spearhead a threatening squad moving forward. And with midfield-maestro Andrea Pirlo in the mix, anything is possible.
Mexico (+1,200)
Why bet Mexico: If you're looking for a solid longshot in the tournament, look no further than Mexico. The Mexicans boast experience, depth and one of the great poachers in the game in Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez of Manchester United.
Japan (+3,300)
Why bet Japan: When the Japanese field a proper squad, they can compete with just about anybody. The midfield is ripe with playmakers such as Shinji
Kagawa and Keisuke Honda, but they are thin up front.
Group B
Spain (+163)
Why bet Spain: Well, Spain win everything, so there's that. The World Cup and Euro 2012 holders will bring Xavi, Iniesta, David Silva and the rest of the usual suspects and look to add to the trophy case.
Uruguay (+1,000)
Why bet Uruguay: Love him or hate him, Luis Suarez is one of the most dynamic forwards in the world and you cannot deny his talent. But, if you don't follow Serie A, then perhaps you aren't too familiar with Edinson Cavani. These two score at will and make a dream pairing up front.
Nigeria (+2,500)
Why bet Nigeria: The Super Eagles breezed through the always competitive African Cup of Nations back in February and that could be a rallying point for them. They boast speed up front with Ahmed Musa and they are always a candidate to cause problems for opposing defenses.
Tahiti (+150,000)
Why bet Tahiti: You are Tahitian.Comment

Tiger improves odds from +1300 to +700 at U.S. Open
Tiger Woods failed to take advantage of soft conditions Friday at Merion Golf Club, which is proving to be quite a test for the field at the U.S. Open.
Tiger battled an elbow injury he sustained Thursday, and struggled to shoot a 3-over 73 in the second round to sit at +3 overall after 36 holes (T-17) - just four shots back of the leaders. Woods has never won a major when outside the top-five after 36 holes.
Tiger was being dealt as high as +1300 at some books Thursday night after he completed just 10 holes due to numerous weather delays. Woods (+700) is now lurking behind Phil Mickelson in the outright odds heading into the weekend after the field also slipped back in the second round to keep him in contention.
First-round leader Phil Mickelson, who opened with a 3-under 67, teed off later Friday afternoon and salvaged a birdie on 18 just before second-round play was suspended due to darkness, to finish his second round at 2-over par. Phil (+450) is the clubhouse leader along with Billy Horschel, who had the low round of the day (67), at 1-under for the tournament.
Here are the overnight outright odds courtesy of Bet365:
Phil Mickelson +450
Tiger Woods +700
Justin Rose +750
Luke Donald +750
Billy Horschel +900
Steve Stricker +1000
Rory McIlroy +1600
Ian Poulter +1800
Charl Schwartzel +2500
Nicolas Colsaerts +2500
Henrik Stenson +2800
Hunter Mahan +2800Comment
