Blackhawks at Bruins: What bettors need to know

Chicago Blackhawks at Boston Bruins (-130, 4.5)

In order to take a step toward solving the Boston Bruins, the Chicago Blackhawks will need to tackle the task that is Tuukka Rask. The goaltender has kept the President's Trophy-winning Blackhawks off the scoreboard for over 122 minutes as the Bruins have claimed a 2-1 edge in the Stanley Cup final. After Rask recorded his third postseason shutout by stopping all 28 shots he faced in a 2-0 triumph on Monday, Chicago will look to get the better of the young stud in Wednesday's Game 4 and end Boston's seven-game home winning streak - thereby evening the series in the process.

The Blackhawks are expected to receive a boost with the "likely" return of Marian Hossa, according to coach Joel Quenneville. Hossa, who shares the team lead with 15 points, was a late scratch with an upper-body injury on Monday - despite taking part in the pre-game warmup. An ailing power play continues to plague Chicago, which has failed to score on all 11 opportunities with the man advantage in the series and 20 consecutive dating back to Game 2 of the Western Conference final versus the Los Angeles Kings.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBC, CBC, RDS

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS: After sharing the team lead in goals with Patrick Kane in the regular season, captain Jonathan Toews has mustered all of one during the playoffs. "Whether it's him or our power play, offensively I think we're all a little gun shy in that area," Quenneville said. "One thing with Johnny, you can always measure how he's going to be competing because game in, game out, he leaves it out there." Quenneville admitted that he has considered reuniting Kane and Toews on the same line - as he did briefly against the Kings. The presence of towering Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara has played a part in splitting the two.

ABOUT THE BRUINS: Credit Patrice Bergeron for adding to Chicago's troubles as last season's Selke Trophy winner scored a power-play goal and won 24 of 28 faceoffs in Game 3. Bergeron has tallied twice with the man advantage in the Stanley Cup - and has won the respect of his teammates in spades. "(He) is by far the best two-way centerman in the league," Brad Marchand said. "He proves it night in and night out how special he is as a two-way guy." Daniel Paille scored for the second straight contest and has three points in the Stanley Cup final.

    TRENDS:

    * Bruins are 7-1 in their last 8 overall.
    * Under is 11-3-3 in Blackhawks last 17 games playing on 1 days rest.
    * Under is 4-0 in Bruins last 4 home games.
    * Blackhawks are 1-4 in the last 5 meetings in Boston.

    OVERTIME:

    1. Chicago C Michal Handzus lost all 10 of his faceoffs in the first two periods of Game 2. He did not take another in the third period.

    2. The Bruins have killed off their last 27 short-handed chances.

    3. Boston has won 11 of its last 13 games.

Confederations Cup betting: Day 4 matches

The FIFA Confederations Cup continues with two matches Wednesday. Here is a quick cheat sheet as the group stage continues in Brazil.

        Brazil v Mexico (-333, +400, +1000)

        Site: Fortaleza

The Brazilians opened the tournament in impressive fashion by dominating a decent Japan squad by a score of 3-0. The starting XI will most likely remain unchanged for the match versus Mexico. The Mexicans played versus Italy but lost 2-1 on a late goal by Mario Balotelli. A loss and Mexico is eliminated. They may not have what it takes to beat Brazil, but they should be attacking with guns blazing. They have the firepower to put some goals on the board, but the question will be weather the Mexicans can stop a very formidable Brazilian attack.

The last time the two nations played was a friendly last year. Mexico won 2-0 on goals by Gio dos Santos and Chicharito Hernandez.

        * Brazil's star Neymar scored the opening goal in brilliant fashion in just the third minute against Japan. He had 63 touches in total while getting just two shots.
        * Mexico's keeper Jose de Jesus Corona made four saves and stopped three crosses in a very good performance against the Italians.

        Italy v Japan (-138, +250, +400)

        Site: Recife

A win and Italy advances out of the group stage. The Italian side could be bolstered by the return of Stephan El Shaarawy to the attack. El Shaarawy missed the opening match against Mexico with an ankle injury but should be recovered and get the start. Japan was beaten by the hosts Brazil 3-0 and must get points here to have any hope of advancing. They have talent in various areas of the pitch, but will be in tough against a very good Italian side.

The two nations have not played since a 1-1 draw in 2001.

        * Andrea Pirlo was orchestral in the 2-1 win over Mexico. The veteran midfielder had a goal, two tackles, 84 touches and 93 percent pass accuracy.
        * Japan's striker Shinji Okazaki was 60 percent of his aerial battles, had 22 touches and took two shots in Japan's loss to Brazil

Blackhawks Look to Tie Up Finals on Wednesday

          2013 STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS

          CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS
          at BOSTON BRUINS

          Stanley Cup Finals
          Game 4 - Boston leads series 2-1
Puck Drops: Wednesday, 8:05 p.m. ET
          Line: Boston -135, Chicago +115, Total: 4.5

Thanks to another herculean effort from Tuukka Rask, the Bruins are seeking a commanding 3-1 series lead over the Blackhawks at home in Game 4 on Wednesday night.

Rask stood on his head in Game 3, turning aside all 28 shots Chicago peppered him with, and leading his team to the 2-0 home victory. Boston held the edge in nearly every statistical category, outshooting the Blackhawks 35-28, outhitting them 31-25 and winning an astounding 40-of-56 faceoffs (71%). The Bruins converted on 1-of-4 power-play chances while Chicago was 0-for-5 with the man advantage. Boston has now killed off 27 straight penalties during its postseason run. Bruins LW Daniel Paille, who scored the overtime goal in Game 2, recorded the first tally of Game 3, propelling his team to its fourth win in the past five meetings with the Blackhawks. Boston now has an 8-2 home record this postseason, including seven straight victories at TD Garden. The Blackhawks fell to 3-5 on the road during this postseason, and also lost star RW Marian Hossa to an upper-body injury. He is listed as questionable for Game 4. Although Chicago's offense has scored just one goal in the past two games combined, this club had scored 28 goals in its previous nine contests (3.1 goals per game), including four in Game 1 against this Boston squad. And history shows that after two or more straight Unders, the Blackhawks are an amazing 18-3 (86%), while the Bruins are just 11-15 (42%) in the past three seasons at home coming off a home win by 2+ goals.
The pick here is underdog CHICAGO to win Game 4 and even the series.

This three-star FoxSheets trend also likes the Blackhawks to pull off the upset:

CHICAGO is 25-6 ATS (+15.0 Units) after playing a road game this season.
          The average score was CHICAGO 3.6, OPPONENT 2.2 - (Rating = 3*).

Blackhawks netminder Corey Crawford (13-7, 1.73 GAA, .936 Sv Pct. in playoffs) has also played very well in his first Stanley Cup Finals, saving 110-of-117 shots (.940 Sv Pct., 1.72 GAA). In the Game 3 loss, he stopped 33-of-35 shots the Bruins put on net. So far in the series, the Blackhawks have just two players with multiple points, C Andrew Shaw (1 G, 1 A, +2 rating) and C Dave Bolland (1 G, 1 A, +1 rating). Five other teammates have at least a dozen shots on goal (RW Marian Hossa 17, C Patrick Sharp 17, RW Patrick Kane 13, C Jonathan Toews 12 and LW Brandon Saad 12), but only Sharp and Saad have actually gotten any of those chances past Tuukka Rask. Hossa's potential absence looms large, as not only has he played the most minutes (28:59 avg. ice time) of any Blackhawks forward this series, he is one of three Chicago players with 15 points in the postseason, tallying seven goals and eight assists with a stellar +8 rating. Sharp (9 G, 6 A, +2 rating) and Kane (6 G, 9 A, +3 rating) are the others tied for the team lead. Despite leading the Blackhawks in minutes played this series, D Duncan Keith (35:43 avg. ice time) and D Niklas Hjalmarsson (29:32 avg. ice time) have both been held without a point. The Blackhawks are 0-for-11 on the power play in the Stanley Cup Finals.

Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask (14-5, 1.64 GAA, .946 Sv Pct. in playoffs) has had a phenomenal series so far, saving 120-of-125 shots (.960 Sv Pct., 1.22 GAA). He's led his team to seven straight home wins, saving 227-of-237 shots (.958 Sv Pct.) during this home win streak. This includes turning aside 135-of-137 shots (.985 Sv Pct.) in the past four games at TD Garden. The Bruins have three players with three points in this series, LW Daniel Paille (2 G, 1 A, +1 rating), LW Milan Lucic (2 G, 1 A, +1 rating) and C Tyler Seguin (0 G, 3 A, +1 rating). Three others have two points, including C Patrice Bergeron, the only player in this series with more than one goal. Both of Bergeron's tallies have been on the power play, where the Bruins are 2-of-9 in this series. Seguin and Bergeron lead the team with 13 shots on goals in this series. Although C David Krejci (9 G, 14 A, 23 points) and LW Nathan Horton (7 G, 11 A, 18 points) lead the NHL in postseason scoring, both have been held without a point in each of the past two games. Boston has five players that have logged at least 28 minutes per game during the NHL Finals, including three that are over 30 minutes -- D Dennis Seidenberg (34:53 avg. ice time), D Zdeno Chara (33:57 avg. ice time) and D Andrew Ference (30:48 avg. ice time). Seidenberg had a game-high six blocked shots and a game-high-tying four hits on Monday.

Bruins series price climbing, total drops for Game 4

The Boston Bruins' odds continue to be on the move after they took a 2-1 series lead against the Chicago Blackhawks in the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs.

The Bruins prevailed in Game 3 by a score of 2-0. Prices on the B's to win the Stanley Cup moved to -230 with the Blackhawks currently sitting at +190.

The Blackhawks opened the series as -145 series favorites back on June 9.

Bettors could have placed a futures bet on the Bruins at +1200 back before the lockout-shortened campaign started in January.

Boston is currently a -130 home favorite in Game 4 and oddsmakers have set a total of 4.5.

The drop in the total is expected, especially with Chicago's scoring woes in the Cup final. The Blackhawks have not scored in 122 minutes 26 seconds and their power play is now 0-for-11 in the series.
