MLB odds and picks – Matt Harvey looks to continue dominance against struggling Nationals
            Three selections on Friday’s card
            Follow The Linemakers on Twitter

The Mets' Matt Harvey leads the NL in strikeouts (157), is just a blip behind Clayton Kershaw in WHIP (0.89 to 0.88) and is third in ERA (2.23).

            Published: Jul 26, 2013

LAS VEGAS -- Matt Harvey has become the toast of New York, and even Yankee fans stop what they’re doing to see what he’ll do next. It’s been quite a while since a Mets player has taken over the rabid baseball scene in New York, but Harvey has been magical almost every outing this season. It’s as if he’s on the verge of a no-hitter every time he’s out there.

In his last outing, he shut down the Marlins, 5-0, going seven innings, allowing only three hits and striking out 10. On the year, he leads the NL in strikeouts (157), is just a blip behind Clayton Kershaw in WHIP (0.89 to 0.88) and is third in ERA (2.23).

Tonight, he takes on the Nationals in the second game of a double-header and is a -121 favorite against Ross Ohlendorf. This will be his third start against the Nats this season, and in both previous instances, he was absolutely awesome, but came away with only one win.

On April 19, he won his fourth consecutive game to start the season by shutting down Washington for seven innings, allowing one run in a 7-1 Mets win. His next time out against them, on June 28, he was just as good, striking out 11 and allowing only one run in seven innings, but the Mets bullpen blew it in the eighth and ninth inning to lose the game, 6-4.

Normally we don’t like to take a team in the second game of a double-header when we don’t know the results of the first game. But hey, this is Matt Harvey, and we know he’s going to bring his A-game – he always does – regardless of what happens in the first game.

Besides his consistent domination of hitters, another big reason we like Harvey tonight is the Nats bats. They put nine runs on the board against Pittsburgh yesterday, but it was only their third win in 14 games. Washington is desperation mode to save their season, and Harvey is the worst possible candidate for them to bust out of their hitting woes against.

Mets closer Bobby Parnell was the goat in Harvey’s last game against Washington, and chances are he’ll be called upon again to close tonight when Harvey’s pitch count nears 110. While that may seem like bad news, Parnell has actually been very good since that June 28 game where he took the loss. He’s converted six of his last seven save opportunities since the loss, including his last two against the Braves.

Expect minimal runs on North side

We’ve got a matchup between the Royals, a team that has stayed UNDER the total in 57 games this season, against the White Sox, who have scored the second least runs (369) in baseball behind the Marlins. Sox lefty Jose Quintana has allowed only seven runs combined over his past four starts and beat the Royals, 3-2, on June 22. Expect a similar score tonight.

            Friday's selections:

            Mets (Harvey) -121 at Nationals

            Royals/White Sox UNDER 8 (-120)

            Cardinals (Wainwright) -112 at Braves

            Second half record: 19-10 (+1,054)

                Joe Gavazzi MLB (19-9 2H, 15-6 L5 Days)

                Friday, July 26th

                MLB

Tampa Bay (Hellickson) at NY Yankees (Sabathia) (-110 ) 7:05 ET

                4% Tampa Bay (Hellickson) (EVEN)

With multiple starters still missing from the Yankee lineup, Jeeter not expected to return until Saturday and the A Rod fiasco still hanging as a dark cloud, it is tough to back the Yankees against the red hot Rays. NYY is 1-4 in the last 5 starts by Sabathia. That includes 0-3 recently where Sabathia has a 5.61 ERA. And in a trio of outings vs. the Rays this year, Sabathia has a 7.29 ERA. Far prefer our meal ticket Tampa Bay whose recent long term run of 46-24 still has them ½ game behind Boston in the role of “Hunter”. More recently, the Rays are 19-3 outscoring the opposition 104-51 while twirling a 2.17 ERA. The Rays have won Hellickson’s last 6 starts in which the youngster has gone 5-0 with a 2.19 ERA. In 5 recent starts vs. NYY, Hellickson is 2-1 with a 3.00 ERA.

Boston (Lackey) at Baltimore (Tillman) (-110) 7:05 ET

                3% Baltimore (Tillman) (-110)

Each of these teams has hit minor speed bumps. Boston remains as the “Hunted” in the division with Tampa Bay and these Orioles hot on their trail. But after a 33-14 run up, Boston has gone 3-5 with a .225 BA averaging 2.9 RPG. Lackey has been a nice surprise with solid numbers of 2.95 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 100/23 KBB. But Lackey is just 7-7 for the season and the Red Sox have won just 4/10 of his road starts where Lackey has a 3.79 ERA. After their 8-1 surge, Baltimore just lost 3 straight to KC scoring a total of only 6 runs. But the Birds remain 31-14/loss and Tillman has shown he knows how to win. Witness the 12-3 record and note the 1.54 ERA of Tillman in 6 starts vs. the Bo Sox.

LA Angels (Williams) at Oakland (Colon) (-160) 10:05 ET

                4% Oakland (Colon) (-160)

Pure pitching mismatch on a field where Oakland is 31-15 YTD and 20-6 recently. In his last 4 starts, Williams is 0-3 with a 14.54 ERA. That includes allowing 6 runs on 8 hits in 5+ IP this past Saturday vs. Oakland. That drops Williams to 0-3 with a 6.14 ERA vs. the As of late. Colon may be the biggest surprise in MLB. He has allowed 3 or less runs in 13 consecutive starts with Oakland sporting a record of 11-1 TRGS in Colon’s last 12. For the year, Colon is 13-3 with a 2.52 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 75/16 KBB. Last Saturday night, Colon allowed just 4 hits in a 6-0 win vs. LAA. In his last 8 starts vs. LAA, Colon has a 1.62 ERA. My recommendation is for a money line play only in this game.

Yankees acquire Soriano from Cubs, no effect on moneyline

The New York Yankees welcome a familiar face to the club as they have reacquired Alfonso Soriano from the Chicago Cubs.

Soriano began his career with the Bronx Bombers playing in Yankee pinstripes from 1999-2003.

The Dominican native was hitting .254 with 17 homers and 51 RBIs prior to the trade. He was in the midst of a fairly hot July as he tallied eight homers and 16 RBIs for the month. For comparisons sake, the Yankees have hit just seven dingers in the month of July.

In his advanced years, oddsmakers don't see him as too big a factor to Yankee moneylines on a game-by-game basis.

"He's probably a little bit of a below average player at this stage," Chris Bennett, oddsmaker at The LVH told Covers. "Soriano is probably a better player than some of the guys the Yankees have been trotting out at the corner outfield positions but there won't be any real effects to the moneyline."

The Yankees host the Tampa Bay Rays in an AL East battle Friday. Soriano is expected to be in the lineup.
