Suspension looming, Yankees underdogs in A-Rod's return

The New York Yankees come to the Windy City for a three-game set with the Chicago White Sox and bring their dark cloud of controversy along with them.

Oddsmakers have set the Yankees at +100 for Monday’s series opener (Chicago -108), expecting to start third baseman Alex Rodriguez in the midst of reports that he will be suspended by Major League Baseball for using PEDs. The suspension stems from an investigation into Biogenesis, an anti-aging clinic in South Florida, which could hand suspensions down to a dozen ball players.

"I think all of us are curious what's going to happen, and is Alex going to be a player for us tomorrow, and what's going to happen with the other guys that are involved in this?" Yankees manager Joe Girardi told reporters Sunday. "(But) in my mind I have him penciled in there tomorrow."

Under the league’s drug policy, Rodriguez can appeal the suspension and continue to play while the appeal process plays itself out. The three-time American League MVP has yet to play this season due to offseason hip surgery and a quad injury suffered during his rehab.

When ESPN’s Outside The Lines originally reported the Biogenesis scandal, Covers talked to Steve Mikkelson, sportsbook manager at the Atlantis Casino in Reno, Nevada, who said A-Rod had no impact on New York’s day-to-day odds.

"A potential suspension to A-Rod will have no effect on the Yankees. All it says is 'now we know for sure that he's not coming back',” Mikkelson said back in June.

The Yankees, who currently sit at 57-53 (-0.17 units) in fourth place in the AL East, are priced at +4,000 to win the World Series.

Monday’s series opener with the White Sox has a total of 7.5 runs.

              Monday MLB

Why we like the Tigers on Monday at -115...both of these teams come into Mondays game playing great ball. This will be a pressure packed four game series with the AL Central on the line and with that being said, we will take the Tigers on Monday who come in playing the better ball. The Tigers come in as winners of their last 11 of 12 games while averaging 6.5 RPG and allowing just 1 RPG. The Indians on the other hand, who although have been playing well, are coming off of series' against the White Sox and Marlins while averaging 4.6 RPG and allowing 3.6 RPG in their past 7 games played. Through the season series, the Tigers are 9-3 against the Indians as well as being 5-1 IN Cleveland. The Tigers will be pitching Anibal Sanchez has posted a highly respectable 0.95 era over his last 19 innings where he allowed 15 hits and 0 HRs during that stretch. Sanchez will also be pitching this game on 5 Days of Rest which is worth noting as he is 4-0 with a 1.20 era as well as not allowing a HR in games that he has pitched on 5 Days of Rest. The last two outings that Sanchez has pitched against the Indians have both come in Cleveland (7-6-13 & 9-15-12) where he went 2-0 while allowing a combined 3 runs through 11 innings on 6 hits, 1 BB, 11 Ks & 0 HRs. The Indians will be pitching Corey Kluber has posted a 3.77 era on the season as well as a 2.88 era at home through 56 innings but has been showing a bit of regression as of late particularly in his past two starts which both came at Progressive Field. Kluber allowed a combined 7 runs through his last 14 innings on 15 hits. That should raise a bit of concern with Kluber as he allowed just 15 hits in his previous 23 innings before that. Another interesting trend for Kluber is that he will be pitching this game on 4 Days of Rest which is a concern for him as he sees his era rise from a 3.77 era on the season to a 4.36 era through 66 innings on 4 Days of Rest. This will also be the fourth time that he will be facing this Tigers offense on the season and you have to wonder how he will fare against this hot hitting bunch who have a combined .298 average with 5 HRs through 104 ABs off of Kluber. Play on the Tigers at -115.

                  Hondo attacks with Zack

Two measly hits and a lone run were all the Dodgers needed yesterday against the Small Bears to help hard-charging Hondo trim his accounts payable to 625 furillos.

Tonight, Mr. Aitch will continue to ride the Dodgers’ trolley in St. Louis — 20 units on Greinke to shut down his Arch enemy.

                      Monday MLB Thoughts

Atlanta at Washington: Had an immediate lean to the Braves and Minor, who's been a freak lately. Obviously that'd be fading Strasburg, who's not been a freak. Nationals healthy for a change, and the ONE thing that gives me pause here is that Kimbrel pitched the last three games, so is probably unavailable tonight. Still doubt I could be talked into the Redskins.

Dodgers at Cardinals: Awful tough to get in front of the Cardinals train right now, but seriously, the Dodgers at +150 or whatever isn't the worst bet one could make. Honestly, if in fact it looks like Greinke can keep St. Louis under a million, then perhaps the Dodgers RL is worth looking at. Wainright has struggled in his last two starts on the road, and clearly the Cardinals bullpen has been under performing. Hanley is listed as doubtful, and Puig apparently isn't 100%. Under might well be the play here.

Brewers at Giants: Clearly the Giants are a travel-tired team, and perhaps mentally as well. Losing two tough one-run games in Florida, now having to go home to face the harsh reality that they're in last place in the NL West. the Brewers may be in last in their division as well, but it has to feel different. Guadin is a flyball pitcher who is going to get hit again like he did against the Reds, and it may well be tonight. Thronborg's only bad outing was the SECOND time the Padres saw the kid, so I do like the Brewers, at least the RL if not the ML.

Detroit-Cleveland: Simply begging for Tigers' money here, and Sanchez pitched well in Cleveland not long ago. The thing I have not liked about Sanchez of late is that he's really picked on weaker competition. Given that the Indians are a better bet against LHP, not hitting great in Miami, and in a first game back, the under is something I'll look at.

Boston-Houston: Almost impossible for me not to take a home teams' RL at +110 or whatever. Lackey hasn't been quite as sharp since the break. Yes, Oberholtzer is not a stud, but he doesn't walk anyone, either.

Minnesota-Kansas City: I know the Twins aren't tearing the cover off the ball, and I know that the Royals have been winning, but still taking Guthrie at -170 isn't real appealing here, and clearly the scalping on that one started early. With the total coming down that would really leave only the Twins RL as a viable option (unless you were quick enough to bet the under at 9), and that's not super viable, although maybe a little incentive for the Twins since the Royals just swept them in Minnesota.

Yankees-White Sox: New York and Andy already being disrespected overnight, but Quintana, when not sharp, is super-hittable. This one would almost be the "lesser of two evils" type of bet. I see the totals' come down to 7.5 in places, and not so much yet at sharper books, and I actually lean over, figuring at least one of these two is going to get hit hard.

Texas-Los Angeles: The Angels handed one away (thank you) that couldn't feel to good on the flight to Dallas, while the Rangers continued to roll and have closed the gap to three in the loss column with Oakland. Obviously that makes the Rangers the early leaders (to bet on) tonight, but as fate would have it it's the Angels with the early love. Since Williams just shut down the Rangers (the probable reason for the early money) I would expect the Rangers to make the adjustments. BUT, it was Perez who just shut down the Angels. So, who makes the most adjustments? The total has come off the key number of 9, which is interesting, but after the meltdown last night by the Angels bullpen, I can't back them here.

Toronto-Seattle: I do like to back Dickey outdoors where there may be some wind to help his knuckleball, and with the temperatures in the 80's in Seattle one would expect the roof to be open. Dunno, maybe that's TOO hot for those guys. If the roof is open, I would expect this total to go over, somehow. And Iwakuma had his nice little run, the Jays are actually a better bet against RHP, and perhaps on a cloud after stealing one last night.
