By game time tonight, the Rangers should know whether Cruz is being suspended and if he will appeal. We make this play regardless of that decision. Texas has beaten LAA in 7/9 series meetings this year. That is a microcosm of why the Rangers lead the Angels by 10 games and why the Angels will not be a factor in the division race. Recent form indicates that LAA is 7-13 of late while Texas has begun their late season surge to catch Oakland with a 6-1 recent record. The pitching records of tonight’s mound opponents are similar. Each has an ERA of 6.00 or higher road and home respectively and each have pitched a return to form game when they matched up against each other last Wednesday night. Texas had lost 3 straight starts by Perez in which he allowed 16 runs in 15 IP. But last Wednesday against LLA, he allowed just 1 run in 7 1/3 IP. Williams had gone 0-5 with a 8.90 ERA since mid -June. Last Wednesday he allowed 1 run on 8 hits an 7 2/3 IP v. Texas. With no clear edge in the starting pitching matchup, we take the better team who is the hotter team with the better bullpen in a win situation.

If you notice, you will see the public heavily on Boston just like they were on Cleveland yesterday when we decided to take the under and the game fell to 2-0. Much is the same here. Boston is expected to rout Houston today, but bear in mind Oberholtzer did not pitch for about 26 days after the Texas game and gave up 1 run in about 3 innings. But, then he pitched against Baltimore on the road and gave up 0 earned runs in 7 innings as the Astros routed the Orioles 11-0 to the surprise of everyone as +227 dogs. It was a huge victory and now the Astros will give him the ball again as he faces a similar potent lineup in the Red Sox. The Red Sox do not have much experience against the lefty who was born in Delaware and combine that with Lackey not having picked up a win in his last 3 starts, and the motivation to pick up the win this time around - not to mention his last 8 of 9 have gone under the posted total, look for this game to likely dip below the posted total this evening in a much more competitive contest than people will give it credit for.

MLB suspends 12, Rangers' Cruz has only betting value

Major League Baseball has handed out 50-game suspensions to 12 players involved in the Biogenesis case, according to reports.

New York Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez will reportedly receive the harshest penalty and be suspended through the end of the 2014 season.

According to Steve Mikkelson, oddsmaker at the Atlantis Reno, Nelson Cruz, the All-Star outfielder of the Texas Rangers, is the only player with any real value to moneylines and totals.

"I think that without question, the Rangers are impacted the most," Mikkelson told Covers. "That's a big bat in the middle of that Ranger lineup that is worth about three or four cents to the moneyline. You'll also see totals come down a little bit as well."

Cruz was batting .269 with 27 homers and 76 RBIs prior to the suspension.

Also suspended was Detroit Tigers SS Jhonny Peralta.

"I don't think Peralta is a real factor," Mikkelson stated. "They went out and got Jose Iglesias who is a much better fielder and that will certainly aid Cabrera defensively. Cabrera can't cover anything out there and Iglesias is a better defensive option than Peralta. Detroit will hit with or without Peralta in the lineup."

Young San Diego Padres shortstop Everth Cabrera was also given a 50-game suspension by MLB.

"I'm not convinced by Cabrera yet," Mikkelson added. "He's a table setter, he gets on base and he's got a really good glove, but he's not a game changer."

This wager will stand only if Rodriguez is allowed to play because that's what this wager is based on.
We really hate to lay runs with the White Sox because this is a team that loses far more games than they win but this isn’t about a baseball game, this is about the elephant in the room. Alex Rodriguez is the most hated man in sports these days. Instead of gracefully accepting his punishment, A-Rod is such a greedy, egomaniac that he’s appealing his season suspension and therefore is allowed to play during the appeal. Text messages, notes, witness testimony – baseball has the whole kit and caboodle on Rodriguez, he knows it, yet he’s still going out there to make a bigger fool of himself than he already has. This isn’t about helping his teammates out either. Players do not get paid when they are suspended. A-Rod is looking only to salvage anything from the 100 million or thereabouts remaining on his contract. Even one game is significant money and that’s all that A-Rod cares about. We’re actually shocked that the Yanks management would even allow him to play but one thing is certain, he’s going to create a media circus in Chicago and we highly doubt his teammates are looking forward to his return or even want him around. No matter what happens from here on in, Rodriguez’s reputation is etched in stone, not as one of the greatest players ever but as a cheater, liar narcissist and one of the most unlikeable players in history.
Expecting the struggling Yankees to respond well here is unreasonable. Rodriguez is not an asset, he’s a detriment. At age 38, he hasn't had a MLB at-bat since last October and expecting him to contribute even a little here is more unreasonable. Alex Rodriguez is doing anything he can to get back on the field so that he can collect. If you believe this crap that he loves his team and teammates, you are dead wrong. He couldn’t give a rat’s ass about the integrity of baseball or the people in it. He wants money and is willing to humiliate himself more to get it. With A-Rod’s unwelcoming presence in the line-up or clubhouse, the Yankees are a team to avoid. The White Sox will be jacked up here and we expect them to dig down deep and give it everything they have.

We have to apologize for last week’s recommended pick of the Lions on the road over the Argonauts. We’ve been suggesting that the Lions have looked out of sorts the entire season thus far and that was never more evident in that disgusting display in Toronto. That game was on Tuesday and the Lions took a five-hour flight back to B.C. on Wednesday. With just four days of practice and a serious injury to right guard Kirby Fabien that will sideline him the rest of the year, the Lions are a huge 11-point choice against a Blue Bombers club that has had 10 days to prepare. Incidentally, when the Argos ruined the Leos last week, Toronto also had 10 days to prepare.
Winnipeg still scored 24 points last week against Calgary with Justin Goltz filling in for Buck Pierce. Earlier this week, Bombers head coach named Goltz his starting QB for the rest of the season and that should have this very capable, four-year backup much more relaxed and confident out there. Goltz is coming on. He seems to be getting better with each passing quarter that he plays. Goltz gets receiver Chris Matthews back for this game and even if Matthews is a bit rusty, the Lions have to pay attention to him. Winnipeg is just 1-4 but they are heading in the right direction. Of their four losses, only one of them has been a poor effort. Winnipeg played nose to nose with the Stamps last week and trailed by just three at the half. A 10-0 third quarter did them in but they didn’t give up and scored 10 points in the final frame.
Both the Lions defense and offense was horrible last week in a crushing defeat in Toronto. Yeah, they figure to be better here but just one of their wins came by more than the margin offered here and that came against Edmonton in a rainstorm. Remember, the Lions have been blown out twice this season already, once by the Argos and once by the Stamps. Two of B.C's three wins were against the reeling Eskies. Winnipeg had had twice as much time to prepare for this one than B.C. has and that’s significant, especially when taking back 11 points.
