3-Unit Play. Take #601 Indiana +3 at Atlanta (7:00 p.m., Thursday, September 26th)
Indiana will not relinquish their hold on the WNBA championship without a fight. They stumbled down the stretch of the regular season and ended up in the 4th spot when the playoffs began with a matchup with the 1 seed Chicago. This proved to be no problem for Tamika Catchings and the number ranked fever defense as they dispatched the top seeded Eastern Conference regular season champs with little push back. They won game one by 15 in Chicago and ended the Sky's season with a 22 point blowout win. They are a hot team right now and should give the Dream all they can handle in game one. Atlanta came out of the regular season with four straight losses and starring at a pesky Washington team in the first round. This proved to be a wakeup call as they dropped game one at home and turned around and payed some of their best basketball since the first month of the season sending the Mystics packing. Angel McCoughtry is the leagues leading scorer so the Fever will have their hands full for sure in the opening game. This should be a great matchup between the prolific scoring of Atlanta and the hard nosed defense of Indiana so look for the Fever to take game one and make this a very entertaining series.
4-Unit Play. Take #603 Phoenix +9 at Minnesota(9:00 p.m.,Thursday,September 26th)
The Mercury limped into the playoffs and was up and down all season. They had a whale of a series in the first round against the Sparks and although they didnt get many stops this season on the defensive end they got just enough against LA to advance to the West Finals winning game three 78-77 on a Brittney Griner baseline jumper. Phoenix is going to need all they can get from Griner against the Minnesota front line and Diana Taurasi will have to carry this team if they want a chance to play for the championship. The Lynx took care of business against the Storm in round one and have the leagues best record overall and also have been dynamite at home all year with a record of 15-2. Maya Moore has a great case that she was snubbed for MVP honors as she has been great all season. Moore plays both ends of the floor and the matchup with Taurasi is a wonderful one to monitor as both Husky alums want to win more than anything. This series will most likely go the distance and 9 points is too many against a team playing as well as Phoenix. It would no surprise if Taurasi wins the first matchup with Moore but either way this game will be decided in the fourth quarter and on the defenisve end and come down to the final buzzer. Va Tech @ Georgia Tech +7
•The Hokies won last season's game against Georgia Tech, 20-17 in overtime.
•Virginia Tech quarterback, Logan Thomas has rushed for 22 career touchdowns (one shy of the school record for quarterbacks set by Tyrod Taylor in 2007-10).
•Running back Trey Edmunds rushed for 132 yards against Alabama in his first collegiate game ever and is listed as probable to start tonight’s game.
•Va Tech ranks fifth nationally in yards allowed per game (233.3 yards per game).
•Georgia Tech is allowing just 11.3 points per game (12th nationally).
•Georgia Tech linebacker Quayshawn Nealy (hamstring) and sophomore safety Chris Milton (wrist) may not play tonight after suffering injuries in last week's game against North Carolina.
•Georgia Tech’s offense has been held in check by Bud Foster’s defense the last 3 years scoring 17, 26, and 21. He knows how to defend the option!
•Georgia Tech ran for 192 yards in last year’s meeting on a whopping 55 carries.
•Frank Beamer is 20-10 ATS on Thursday night games as the head coach at Virginia Tech
•Weather predicted in the High 60’s, no rain, and wind not much of a facto
TRENDS TO CONSIDER:
* Under is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
* Hokies are 1-4 ATS in their last five meetings.
* Underdog is 6-1 ATS in their last seven meetings.
* Road team is 6-1 ATS in their last seven meetings.
* Georgia Tech is 18-0 when scoring 40 or more points in coach Paul Johnson’s six seasons
OC Dooley:“2 UNIT” BASEBALL INTANGIBLE TOTAL (Rays at Yankees UNDER 7’ in a 7:05 eastern start------Cobb versus Nova): Even though the Yankees last night were officially eliminated from the playoffs for the first time since 2008, they have plenty to play for in their HOME FINALE which is also the final appearance for superstar closer Mariano Rivera at Yankee Stadium. No matter what the score of tonight’s contest it is almost a guarantee that Rivera will appear in the final inning and also pitch well in what he terms a gift for “the fans” who have supported him since way back in the 1995 campaign. Visiting Tampa has won 6 consecutive games against tough competition but still have not officially locked in a Wildcard Playoff spot, so they will continue to send out their top starting pitchers. Arguably Alex Cobb has been the most consistent Rays hurler this season and he has admitted publicly to being quote “in the groove” down the stretch. Odds of Tampa playing a LOW SCORING contest tonight are much higher than during the weekend when they close the regular season inside a facility north of the border (Toronto) that has yielded the most combined homers in the majors. On the mound for New York in the home finale tonight is the same Ivan Nova who last time on the mound had a brilliant SHUTOUT performance. To make a long story short the Rays are all about pitching talent so the following statistic should not come as a shock when they are playing well. In the past two years after winning “six” consecutive times Tampa is 11-1 UNDER the total in the “seventh” contest
