Sunday Night Football betting: Texans at 49ers

Houston Texans at San Francisco 49ers (-6, 41.5)

Two of the league's most disappointing teams thus far, the visiting Houston Texans and the San Francisco 49ers look to reestablish themselves as Super Bowl contenders when they square off Sunday night. The Texans are only a game behind Indianapolis and Tennessee in the AFC South, but they're reeling after blowing a 17-point lead in the second half and losing 23-20 in overtime last week against Seattle. "You don't get to enjoy winning long enough and losing seems like it takes about a month for you to play again," Texans coach Gary Kubiak told reporters. "Just the disappointment, but you've got to move on."

Houston faces a tough task trying to turn things around with a prime-time road game against San Francisco, which has been wildly inconsistent, yet very impressive in its two wins. The 49ers returned from the brink of trouble with a 35-11 win at St. Louis last week, getting back track on both sides of the ball after back-to-back embarrassing losses to Seattle and Indianapolis. The defending NFC champions had their best game of the year running the ball and were dominant in holding the Rams to 188 total yards.

    TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, NBC.

LINE: The 49ers opened as 7-point faves, but are now -6. The total opened at 42.5 and is down to 41.5.

WEATHER: Temperatures will be in the low-60s with clear skies.

ABOUT TEXANS (2-2): Houston ranks second in the AFC in total offense (410.3 yards per game) and leads the NFL in total defense (254.3) but is minus-4 in turnover margin. The offense sputtered in the second half and overtime last week, and Matt Schaub threw an ill-advised pass that was returned for a game-tying interception. The Texans expect linebacker Brian Cushing to clear the concussion protocol on Friday and be eligible to play after leaving last week's game in the third quarter.

ABOUT 49ERS (2-2): San Francisco's offense disappeared in its consecutive losses, but the 49ers returned to form last week, shredding the Rams with a balanced attack. Colin Kaepernick has been limited in the ground game but rebounded from a pair of poor passing games to throw two touchdown passes against St. Louis. The 49ers lead the NFC in total defense (299.8 yards per game) despite playing without star linebacker Patrick Willis (groin) last week, but they plan to have Willis back Sunday.

    TRENDS:

    * Texans are 0-8 ATS in their last eight games in Week 5.
    * 49ers are 16-7-1 ATS in their last 24 home games.
    * Over is 7-1 in 49ers last eight home games.
    * Over is 4-1 in Texans last five games overall.

    EXTRA POINTS:

    1. Houston is 17-7 when RB Arian Foster has over 100 yards rushing. Foster has reached the mark in five of his past seven games versus NFC opponents.

    2. 49ers S Donte Whitner made headlines this week by announcing he plans to drop the "W" from his last name and officially change it to "Hitner."

    3. Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins was named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Month for September after catching 20 passes for 270 yards and a touchdown.
