Packers seek 5th straight win hosting Bears Monday
            by Zach Cohen

            Kickoff: Monday, 8:40 p.m. ET
Line: Green Bay -10.5, Total: 50.5

The Jay Cutler-less Bears head to Lambeau Field on Monday night for a matchup with the streaking Packers.

Chicago is coming off a bye week in which Josh McCown prepared for his new role as the starting quarterback where he will replace Cutler (groin) for the next month. The Packers also have injury concerns being minus three key receivers in WR Randall Cobb (fibula), WR James Jones (shin) and TE Jermichael Finley (neck). However, that didn't stop Green Bay from defeating the Vikings 44-31 on the road to give the team four straight SU victories (3-0-1 ATS). The Bears have failed to cover in four straight games, dropping three of those contests outright. In the past six meetings between these teams, the Packers are 6-0 SU and 5-1 ATS. They are on a five-game ATS winning streak against the Bears and have won their past five home games (4-1 ATS) against Chicago as well. As the coach of Green Bay, Mike McCarthy is 33-13 ATS (72%) versus division opponents, including 8-1 ATS over the past two seasons. Chicago, however, is 12-4 ATS (75%) after allowing 200 or more rushing yards in its previous game since 1992.

The Bears got off to a 3-0 start this season, but have slowed down since and will now be without QB Jay Cutler (groin) for another three weeks at least. Josh McCown takes over as the starter in this offense, and last game in relief he completed 14-of-20 passes for 204 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions while rushing four times for 33 yards in a 45-41 loss in Washington. The offense will now rely even more heavily on the shoulders of RB Matt Forte, who has rushed for 533 yards (4.6 YPC) and six touchdowns this year. The running back has also caught 35 passes for 262 yards and provides a nice safety valve for McCown. Although he's gained 817 total yards in nine career meetings with Green Bay, Forte has not found the end zone in any of the past seven meetings. But this is still a pass-heavy offense with 255 passing YPG (11th in NFL) and 7.3 yards per attempt (9th in league) thanks to a dynamic receiving duo of WRs Brandon Marshall (540 rec. yards, 5 TD) and Alshon Jeffery (561 rec. yards, 2 TD). The Packers did a great job limiting both players last year, as Marshall had only eight catches and 80 yards over the two defeats, while Jeffery caught only one of his six targets against Green Bay. With Jay Cutler out, the Chicago defense is going to need to step it up as a unit. The Bears have been struggling mightily this season, allowing 29.4 points per game (29th in NFL) and 391 total YPG (27th in league). This includes surrendering 273.7 YPG through the air (T-27th in NFL) and 117.3 YPG on the ground (25th in NFL). This defense thrives on turnovers with five games of 3+ takeaways, but has generated just one turnover in the past two defeats.

The Packers may have a depleted roster, but they continue to win games. Last week they won in Minnesota behind 285 yards and two touchdowns from QB Aaron Rodgers. The star signal caller has dominated the Bears in his career, going 8-2 with 249 passing YPG, 19 TD and just 6 INT in 10 meetings. Second-year WR Jarrett Boykin has stepped up in the absence of injured WRs James Jones and Randall Cobb, catching 13 passes for 192 yards and a touchdown over the past two weeks for Green Bay. RB Eddie Lacy has also been a monster on the ground for the Packers averaging 98.8 rushing YPG on 4.1 YPC over the past four weeks with two touchdowns in that span. He has really opened up the passing game for Rodgers as he is adding a running threat the team hasn’t had in years. Not to be overlooked is a Green Bay defense that continues to be outstanding, specifically on the ground. The defense has allowed just 83.6 rushing YPG (4th in NFL) and limited Vikings star RB Adrian Peterson to 60 yards on the ground last week. Although top pass rusher, OLB Clay Matthews, remains out with a thumb injury, the Packers have still generated 20 sacks over the past five games. But not all has been positive for Green Bay, as its defense has forced just two turnovers during its four-game win streak, and ranks last in the NFL in red zone defense (71.4%).

                MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL SELECTIONS

                2-Unit Play. Take #423 Chicago (+11) over Green Bay (8:40 p.m., Monday, Nov. 4)

1-Unit Play. Take 'Over' 49.5 - Chicago at Green Bay (8:40 p.m., Monday, Nov. 4)
This is just a lot of points for a rivalry game. Especially with Chicago having its back to the wall and the Bears coming off a bye week. Marc Trestman knows that he has to beat the Packers to be accepted as the Bears coach. He can't do that here, of course, but there is no doubt that Chicago is going to be ready for this game. This isn't Tampa Bay heading to Seattle or Minnesota playing at Dallas, two games with comparable spreads. This is Bears-Packers. This is THE rivalry in the NFL. Yes, the Bears are without Jay Cutler. But I don't think there is a massive drop-off from him to Luke McCown. McCown isn't some doe-eyed rookie. He's an 11-year NFL veteran that has over 30 starts under his belt. He can throw the ball. And if he takes care of the ball the Bears have a chance to score some points against a suspect Packers defense. Green Bay has been doing it with smoke and mirrors without Clay Matthews. They gave up 31 points to a weak Vikings offense last week and surrendered over 400 rush-pass-return yards against Cleveland. Yes, the Packers have dominated the series. And Green Bay is going to win against because Aaron Rodgers is just absolutely locked in right now. But this Packers team isn't as good as it has been the past three years. And seven of the last 10 meetings in this rivalry have been decided by one score - eight points or less. Bears make it competitive. Let's call it 31-23.

                      WINNING POINTS

Golden State over *Philadelphia by 5
The Warriors open a four-game road trip and this easily is their most winnable game.
Andre Iguodala won't lack incentive going against his former team.
                      GOLDEN STATE 102-97.

                      Minnesota over *Cleveland by 1
An improved and healthy Ricky Rubio to go with Kevin Love trumps the Cavaliers'
promising young talent. Cleveland entered the season 0-5-1 ATS during its last six

Lacking a go-to scorer and without a ball distributor with Rajon Rondo out, the
Celtics are going to have problems coming up with any kind of offense against the
league's top defensive club. Memphis covered 55 percent of its home games last season going 6-2-1 ATS when laying nine or more points.
                      MEMPHIS 98-77.

*Los Angeles Clippers over Houston by 3
Good early test here for Doc Rivers, the Clippers' new coach, and for DeAndre Jordan

Tale of the Tape: Chicago Bears at Green Bay Packers

Two teams with division title aspirations meet at Lambeau Field on Monday night as the Green Bay Packers entertain the Chicago Bears in an NFC North battle.

The Packers have overcome a sluggish start to post four consecutive victories, including a wild 44-31 triumph over the host Minnesota Vikings last week. Chicago has dropped three of four following a season-opening three-game winning streak, and is coming off a much-needed bye.

Here's the breakdown in our betting tale of the tape:

                            Offense

Green Bay comes into the Monday nighter with one of the most formidable offensive attacks in the NFL. The Packers generate a whopping 438.9 yards per game - second only to Denver - and its 30.3 points-per-game average is third in the league. Green Bay has excelled in both the passing games and running games, averaging 297.4 yards per game through the air and an additional 141.4 on the ground.

Chicago has averaged a respectable 254.9 passing yards per game to date, but maintaining that pace may be difficult with starting quarterback Jay Cutler on the sidelines with a groin injury. Backup Jake McCown takes over an offense that sits second in the league in points per game at 30.4; McCown went 14-of-20 for 204 yards and a score against Washington. Chicago is averaging 112.9 rushing yards per contest, putting it in the middle of the pack.

                            Edge: Green Bay

                            Defense

Green Bay's pass defense has come together nicely after struggling through the first five weeks, limiting Cleveland's Brandon Weeden and Minnesota's Christian Ponder to a combined 294 yards in back-to-back victories. The Packers are still an ordinary pass-defending team overall, surrendering 12 touchdowns with just three interceptions. They've fared much better against the run, allowing the fewest yards on the ground in the league (585).

Chicago's defensive struggles were on display prior to its bye week, when it allowed the Redskins to compile 499 yards of offense - including an absurd 209 on the ground. The Bears are permitting opposing quarterbacks to rack up 274 passing yards per game and have a league-low nine sacks, though Chicago is among the league leaders with 10 interceptions. The Bears are allowing 117.3 rushing yards per contest, among the worst marks in the NFL.

                            Edge: Green Bay

                            Special Teams

Green Bay's return game is a contrast in results - averaging a league-worst 15.3 yards per kickoff return and 14.3 yards per punt return, one of the top five rates in the league. The Packers are allowing 32.3 yards per kickoff return - the most in the NFL - but are limiting opponents to 7.9 yards per punt return attempt. Green Bay kicker Mason Crosby has been dependable as always, making 17-of-19 field-goal attempts - including 7-of-9 from 40+ yards.

Chicago has the most kickoff return attempts in the league (30) and is averaging 24.7 yards; it has a 13.3-yard average on punt return attempts, and is one of seven teams with a punt-return touchdown. The Bears rank in the middle of the pack in kickoff return average against (24.9) but are near the bottom in punt return average against (15.2). Kicker Robbie Gould has made 12 of his 13 field-goal attempts, including all six from at least 40 yards out.

                            Notable Quotable

"Last year, especially that second game, they rolled to me a lot and left Alshon (Jeffrey) one-on-one. I don't know if they're going to give Alshon one-on-ones this year. He's leading our team in receiving yards. He's been doing a lot of damage." - Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall

"I guess you could say they get away with some stuff. It's part of football. In the interior, they hold all the time. Receivers push off all the time. And if you're a smart DB, you're going to grab all the time until they warn you and tell you not to do it anymore. They're going to push, I'm going to hold." - Packers cornerback Davon House

Rockets at Clippers: What bettors need to know

Houston Rockets at Los Angeles Clippers (-5, 207.5)

Dwight Howard is back in the Staples Center, only it will be the Clippers he faces in his first visit back to Los Angeles since leaving the Los Angeles Lakers for Houston. Howard leads the Rockets into Monday’s game against the Clippers and he is averaging 15 points and 17 rebounds as Houston won its first three games. Point guard Chris Paul recorded three consecutive double-doubles while helping Los Angeles to a 2-1 start.

With Howard teamed with 7-footer Omer Asik in the Rockets’ starting lineup, the Clippers duo of center DeAndre Jordan and power forward Blake Griffin will have their work cut out for them. “They’re really big and there’s nothing much more than that,” Los Angeles coach Doc Rivers said. “They’re big and dominant. They dominate on the glass right now.” Griffin has put together consecutive 20-point, 10-rebound games and Jordan typically gets up for the battle with Howard, a close friend of his. Rockets guard James Harden tweaked his ankle in Saturday’s victory over Utah but says he will play.

LINE: Los Angeles opened as a 5-point home favorite and is as big as -5.5. The total jumped from 206.5 to 207.5.

ABOUT THE ROCKETS (3-0, 2-0-1 ATS): Two significant things happened in the 104-93 victory over Utah – Houston rallied from a 16-point halftime deficit to win by double digits in the second game of a back-to-back and forward Chandler Parsons displayed last season’s form. Parsons averaged 9.5 points on 7-of-19 shooting over the first two games before contributing 24 points, 12 rebounds and six assists against the Jazz. “I was struggling the first two games, especially with my shot,” said Parsons, who was 8-of-14 against Utah. “And then in his one, the other guys were struggling and I finally had it going.”

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (2-1, 2-1 ATS): Los Angeles played away from the Staples Center for the first time on Saturday when it defeated the Sacramento Kings. Rivers was pleased with the poise the team displayed in the rabid atmosphere in Sacramento. “We’re going to get them all year. I went through this once,” Rivers said afterwards. “I’m telling you, when people think you’ve got a shot at (a title), everybody wants to knock you off. That’s just the way it’s going to be. At the end of the day, that will be good for us.”
