Pacers at Knicks: What bettors need to know

Indiana Pacers at New York Knicks (+6.5, 186.5)

The New York Knicks look to snap a five-game home losing streak and a three-game slide overall when they host the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday. New York's difficult start to the season continued Tuesday in Detroit, where they fell behind right after halftime and never led again in a 92-86 setback. Carmelo Anthony scored 25 points but was 8-for-20 from the floor and had seven turnovers.

The Pacers have had plenty of time to digest their first loss of the season, a 110-94 setback at Chicago on Saturday. All five Indiana starters reached double figures but leading scorer Paul George was held to a season-low 12 points on 3-of-14 shooting. The home team won all four meetings between the Pacers and Knicks last season, and New York has won five of the last six encounters at Madison Square Garden.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN, FSN Indiana, MSG (New York)

Line: The line opened at New York +5.5 and has been bet to +6.5. The total opened at 188 and is now down to 186.5.

ABOUT THE PACERS (9-1): The loss to the Bulls was a severe departure from the norm for Indiana. It was coming off a 27-point win against Milwaukee the night before which represented Indiana's best offensive showing and largest margin of victory this season. In addition, no Pacers opponent had scored more than 91 points in the first nine games before Chicago broke out on the strength of an 11-for-19 showing from long range.

ABOUT THE KNICKS (3-7): Amid a three-game losing streak, New York has to try to find positives where it can. Perhaps one came Tuesday night in Detroit with the play of J.R. Smith, who finally showed some scoring punch after being thrust back into a sixth man role. Smith, who had 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting off the bench versus the Pistons, was a dismal 12-for-53 from the floor in four games as a starter.

    TRENDS:

    * Favorite is 5-0 ATS in the last five meetings.
    * Home team is 5-0 ATS in the last five meetings.
    * Under is 3-1-1 in the last five meetings in New York.
    * Pacers are 1-5 ATS in the last six meetings in New York.

    BUZZER BEATERS:

    1. New York did not lose its seventh game last season until its 26th game.

    2. Indiana C Roy Hibbert has 38 points, 20 rebounds and 11 blocked shots in his last two games.

    3. Knicks F Metta World Peace (knee) and PG Raymond Felton (back) are both considered day-to-day.

Penguins at Capitals: What bettors need to know

Pittsburgh Penguins at Washington Capitals (+104, 5.5)

Metropolitan Division supremacy will be on the line Wednesday when Sidney Crosby and the first-place Pittsburgh Penguins visit Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals. "It's good for the NHL because they're both faces of the NHL, they're both superstars in this league and they both sell the game extremely well," Washington's Troy Brouwer said. Ovechkin hasn't slowed down since winning his third Hart Trophy last season, scoring twice in Sunday's 4-1 triumph over St. Louis to pull into a tie with Blues stud Alexander Steen for the goal-scoring lead (17).

Washington has benefited from Ovechkin's scoring assault, winning three in a row and improving to 7-1-1 in its last nine to move within one point of Pittsburgh. The Penguins posted just their second win in six outings on Monday as Crosby scored and rookie Brian Gibbons celebrated his NHL debut with a goal and an assist in a 3-1 victory over Anaheim. Pittsburgh has won each of the last four meetings with Washington.

      TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBC Sports, TSN2

ABOUT THE PENGUINS (13-8-0, 7-13 O/U): Evgeni Malkin was absent from Tuesday's practice with a maintenance day, but coach Dan Bylsma said he expects the former Hart Trophy winner to be in the lineup against Washington. Malkin's goalless streak reached 14 games on Monday, but he notched two assists for the second time in three contests. Bylsma noted that he plans to keep his lines intact, so Beau Bennett will remain in the top grouping with Crosby and Chris Kunitz.

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (12-8-1, 11-10 O/U): Although Mike Green skated in practice on Tuesday, coach Adam Oates sounded as if he was going to keep his stud defenseman sidelined for a third straight game with a lower-body injury. "He's missed a lot of time and it's a big game," Oates said. "I don't want to put him in a situation where he's behind the 8-ball. He hasn't been able to do a lot of cardio, so I’m a little worried about his conditioning."

      TRENDS:

      * Penguins are 4-0 in the last four meetings.
      * Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings in Washington.
      * Home team is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
      * Under is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings.

      OVERTIME:

      1. Washington C Nicklas Backstrom, who had three assists on Sunday, has scored three goals and set up nine others in his last nine contests.

      2. Pittsburgh has killed off 21-of-22 short-handed situations in its last nine games.

      3. Capitals G Braden Holtby made 46 saves against St. Louis, but has yielded 11 goals on 79 shots en route to an 0-3-0 career mark versus Pittsburgh.

              Manhattan at Illinois St
Manhattan has four starters back from last year's squad and already boasts an impressive road win over Lasalle. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Illinois State lost their top six players from a year ago and are trying to rebuild, although they did get a win the other day over an unimpressive Northwestern squad. Illinois State is going to need to figure out a way to slow down the Manhattan offense, which has scored just over 81 ppg, while the redbirds are only scoring 64 ppg. The Jaspers HC Masiello is a Rick Pitino disciple and he has done a nice job improving the roster and the play at Manhattan. They continue that progress tonight with a win on the road vs. a traditional MVC quality opponent. The Sharps say...

              2 UNITS - MANHATTAN (-2)
