Colorado won last five games since an opening loss to #39 Baylor; Buffs beat #100 UCSB by 8, #122 Wyoming by 5- Harvard is #47. Colorado is making just 31.1% from arc so far. This is first road game for a Harvard team thats beaten four stiffs; they've turned ball over 19.5% of time and made only 25% from arc. Ivy League road underdogs are 5-4 vs spread.
Kansas State was up 17 at half, forced 20 TOs, made 20-28 on foul line in 71-58 home win over Long Beach last Sunday; Wildcats scored 62 ppg in losing first two games here; they went in tank vs Georgetown on Friday, are shooting 25% from arc, 64% on foul line in 2-3 start. Beach is 0-5 vs D-I teams, who are shooting 59% against them inside the arc.
VCU is 4-1 but was getting ripped by TV guys while trailing Friday vs Long Beach; Rams rallied to win by 6, are forcing turnovers on 27.0% of possessions. Curious to see their pressure vs Georgetown's Princeton offense; Hoyas lost to Oregon/Northeastern, both by 7; they're middle of road team protecting ball, are shooting just 30.3% from the arc.
Florida State is 4-1 after tough OT loss to Michigan; FSU led by 16 in second half, by 8 with 2:59 left, but didn't finish. Seminoles are turning ball over 24.3% of time, in bottom 15 in US. Northeastern was down 11 in first round, rallied to beat Hoyas, but are 2-3, with three losses by 9 or less points. Huskies are shooting just 61.8% from line (#305 in US).
Michigan came back from dead to beat Florida St. Friday; Wolverines are 4-1, but FSU win is their only top 200 win- they're in top 15 in country protectng ball, make 39.5% of 3's. Charlotte is 4-1 and was up 16 at the half in its loss; 49ers play faster (#17 tempo in US). Big Dozen favorites are 6-3 vs spread away from home. C-USA road underdogs are 15-10.
Louisville is 5-0 with five wins by 14+ points over five stiffs, best of which is #218 Charleston; Cardinals forced turnovers 30.4% of time, #1 in US, but North Carolina is much stiffer test, even without Hairston, (suspended). UNC played three starters 32+ minutes in 82-72 win over Richmond yesterday (36-33 at half). ACC underdogs are 8-3 vs spread.
New Mexico has two good big guys but Bairstow was in foul trouble in first two games of this tourney; Davidson doesn't have quickness that'll give Lobos trouble. 1-4 Wildcats are well-schooled but inexperienced- they've already lost three games by 13+ points. Teams are making 62% of shots inside arc against them. SoCon underdogs are 5-18 vs spread.
Georgia lost last three games by 9-12-2 points, allowing 85.7 ppg; 7th-place game in 8-team tourney is always fiercely fought- no one wants to go home 0-3. Nebraska's two foes here shot 76 foul shots (Huskers shot 57)- they've yet to adjust to new rules. Big Dozen favorites are 6-3 vs spread away from home. SEC underdogs are 4-5 against the spread.
Temple is 2-3, with two wins by total of 7 points; Owls made 11-20 on arc in 83-81 win vs Georgia Friday, after they trailed 15-5 right off bat. Temple lost 4 starters from LY, is rebuilding. UAB is 4-1, losing only to New Mexico when Lobos hit tying 3's at end of regulation/first OT; they are in bottom 5 in US forcing turnovers but are rebounding 45% of their missed shots (#1 in US), so they're a physical team.
UMass is 5-0 with four top 90 wins; they're playing top 10 pace in US, rebounding 41% of misses, making 39.4% from arc. UMass is #41 in US in experience, Clemson is #294 in experience, but Tigers are 5-0, giving up 58 or less points in every game; best team they beat is #101 South Carolina. Clemson is playing at a bottom 10 pace in country, so terrific contrast of styles. Clemson should have crowd edge in Charleston.
Northern Iowa led LMU 53-36 at half Friday in its 90-81 win, unusually good scoring game for Panthers, who lost first two D-I games. Maryland allowed 44-43 points in pounding two stiffs, 78-90 in losses to UConn, Oregon State- Beavers were inspired playing in front of their coach's brother-in-law. Terps are turning ball over 21.5% of time, making just 63.8% at line.
Providence was down 16 in second half vs Vandy Friday, ended game on 26-4 run; Friars are 5-0, also beating BC in OT and three stiffs- they've rebounded 41.2% of their misses, made 81% of freee throws. LaSalle is 3-2 but has only one win by more than six points vs shaky schedule-- they're only making 31.6% from arc so far- they made 37.7 of 3's LY.
North Dakota State is 1-2, losing to St Mary's/Southern Miss, despite making 59.6% of shots inside arc. Home side won last three games in this series; State lost 59-54 in last visit here, two years ago. Why aren't these teams in the same league? North Dakota lost by 18 at Wisconsin in its only D-I game- they didn't beat a D-I team last year until Dec. 28.
