See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

Spot bets are classic handicapping practices that have proven profitable no matter what sport you’re betting. Whether it’s a team looking past this week’s opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots.

    Letdown spot

The Villanova Wildcats had fun in the sun this past weekend, shocking No. 2 Kansas and edging Iowa in overtime to win the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas. The Wildcats narrowly avoided a massive letdown against the Hawkeyes in the championship game, overcoming a sloppy first half in which they committed 12 of their 19 turnovers. If it wasn’t for James Bell catching fire from beyond the arc, Villanova would have been a one-hit wonder this weekend.

It will be a shock to the system when the Wildcats return home. Not only does the bitter cold of Philadelphia sting extra when you’ve been soaking in the tropical heat but Villanova could come crashing back to earth against two tough opponents this week. The Wildcats face off against Big 5 rivals Penn Wednesday and St. Joseph’s Saturday. Be careful of overinflated Villanova’s bubble bursting this week.

    Lookahead spot

The Houston Rockets are living up to the preseason hype, jumping out to a 13-5 record and winning five straight games heading into Monday’s matchup with Utah. The Rockets peaked with a 112-106 win over the division-leading Spurs Saturday and can make another huge statement in the Western Conference with a win over Golden State Friday.

But before Houston butts heads with the Warriors, it hosts the NBA’s best bet Wednesday night. The Phoenix Suns bring their 12-4-1 ATS mark (as of Monday) to the Honda Center, coming off a game in Memphis the night before. The Suns have hung tough with the best in the West, covering on the road in Oklahoma City, Denver and San Antonio this year, and enter the week as 8-1 ATS away from home. Phoenix went 2-2 SU and 3-1 ATS in its four meetings with Houston last season.

    Schedule spot

Some teams see the NFL Thanksgiving games as a burden, throwing a mid-week wrench into a team’s schedule so deep into the season. Others, like the Dallas Cowboys, have learned to cope with the Turkey Day tasks and benefit from them greatly in Week 14 of the season. Since scoring a comeback win over the Raiders last Thursday, the Cowboys will have 10 full days between games before taking the field in Chicago Monday night.

This extended break is huge for Dallas at this point in the season. Not only does the 10-day hiatus act as a mini bye week, giving the coaching staff added time to fine tune its gameplan for Monday, but it also allows the Cowboys to lick their many wounds. Dallas is expected to return top LB Sean Lee from a hamstring injury, and could get CB Morris Claiborne and return weapon Dwayne Harris back as well.

Where the action is: Sharps, public on MNF Over

Two of the best teams in the NFC square off on the national stage on Monday Night Football as the Seattle Seahawks host the New Orleans Saints.

We talk to oddsmaker Michael Stewart of Carbonsports.ag about the action coming in on Monday Night Football and where the odds could move come kickoff.

New Orleans Saints at Seattle Seahawks - Open: -5.5, Move: -6, Move: -5

Unsurprisingly, the Seahawks (10-1 SU, 7-4 ATS) are a perfect 5-0 SU at CenturyLink Field this season, and are 3-2 ATS in front of the 12th Man.

The Saints (9-2 SU, 6-5 ATS) are riding a three-game winning streak and won and covered in their previous game on Monday night back in Week 4.

Most shops opened this game with the Seahawks -5.5 or -6 and bettors stepped up to back the home team from the jump.

"We opened Seahawks -5.5 and quickly saw action on the favorite," Stewart tells Covers. "when we saw that 5.5 points against a very good Saints team wasn't enough to slow down the early action on the Seahawks, we went to 6 early last Monday morning."

Bettors came back on the Saints at that number, followed by sharp action which brought the line back to -5.5 and eventually -5, the number Carbonsports.ag is currently dealing.

"So far we've booked this game dead even, with a little bit more money on the dog but when this game kicks, I have a feeling we'll have little or no decision on this side of this game," Stewart says.

The total opened at 46 and sharp bettors instantly backed the Over on that number, thus moving the total to 47.

"At 47, the public started getting involved and betting this game over that number, so we went to 47.5 on Saturday," he says. "With more than 80 percent of the action on the over, this morning we skipped going to 48 and went through that key number to 48.5, the total we're currently dealing."

              Andre Gomes | NBA SidesFree pick701 ORL 7.0 (-110) Bookmaker.com vs 702 WASAnalysis: NBA - 701 Orlando Magic @ 702 Washington Wizards

Nene Hilario returned to the team and of course, with that Washington's offense improved big time once again. The Wizards had just scored 73 points at Indiana the night before without him, but with Nene back in the lineup, the Wizards had a great offensive game against Atlanta. Their pick and rolls, spot ups and transitions worked well, but then their starters were on the floor for a very heavy number of minutes! On the other side, Orlando didn't stand a chance against San Antonio, even though they were playing without Tony Parker. The Spurs' depth and confidence were the key for this game, besides the fact that Tim Duncan had finally a big game with 8-13 FG, 3-3 FT, 19 points and 9 rebounds in 23 minutes, while also stopping Nikola Vucevic, who had just 4-12 FG and 8 turnovers! In fact, Orlando ended the game with 0-7 FG on post ups, which shows the Magic's inability to score near the basket against the Spurs' elite rim defense. On the other hand, the Magic's perimeter shooting was at a nice level, but that wasn't enough to beat the Spurs.

For tonight's game, I believe Orlando will be more competitive because Washington's interior defense has nothing to do with the Spurs. If San Antonio is allowing 57% FG at the rim and 38.5% FG from 4-9 feet, Washington is allowing 64% FG and 43% FG in those areas! Another important factor has to do with the bench. If the Magic hang around with the Spurs' starters and only San Antonio's bench outplayed them, things will be different with Washington's poor bench, who won't outplay anybody. Therefore, I expect a close game in here and so, I'll be taking the Magic tonight.

              Pick: 3 units (Single Dime Play) on 701 Orlando Magic (+7) @ -110 / 1.91 on Bookmaker
