        NBA

Philadelphia 76ers at Charlotte Bobcats (-6) 7:05 ET

        4* Charlotte (-6)

No MCW for Philly or MKG for Charlotte. The Bobcats as 6 pt. chalk? Why not, they are the most improved team in the league. Meanwhile, Philly has reverted to their preseason expectations. They enter on a negative slide of 2-9 SU, 3-7 ATS and have allowed 114 points in their last 13 games. L2+Y, the Sixers have shown a negative return with a record of 19-28 ATS as single digit road dog.

Denver Nuggets (-4) at Boston Celtics 7:35 ET ESPN

        5* Denver Nuggets (-4)

Under 1st year HC Shaw, Denver enters tonight on a 10-3 SU ATS run. They have covered 6/8 recent road games. Fundamentally, the Nuggs hold significant fundamental edges at a pair of all-important positions with PG Lawson and PF Faried, notably better than Boston counterparts Bradley and Sullinger. The Celtics may be headed to more than their projected 27 wins. If so, they will have to continue to beat up on the “have nots” of the Eastern Conference. Only one Boston victory this year has come against a winning team.

Golden St. Warriors at Houston Rockets (-5) 8:00 ET

        5* Houston Rockets (-5)

How would you like to be 117-14 ATS (89%)? That is what you would be in the NFL if you were able to pick the SU winner in competitively priced NFL games where the opening line is 6 or less. The NBA version of that is the Houston Rockets. They are right on track for their projected 54 wins with a 13-7 SU ATS mark. But, if you had picked the SU winner of every Houston Rockets game, you would be 18-2 ATS. Expect full focus as the Rockets look to bounce back from consecutive losses. But still remain on an 8-3 SU ATS run. Golden is just 3-3 SU ATS without Iguodala.

        CBKB

Arizona St. (-3) at DePaul 7:00 ET FS1

        5* DePaul (+3)

Fool me once, shame on you and that’s exactly what the DePaul Blue Demons did in their Sunday win against Oregon St., a team who had won at Maryland by double digits early in the season. Thus, the 93-81 DePaul victory was clear confirmation that the addition of new recruits Hamilton and Garrett have melded nicely with 4RS. Now, they take on an Arizona St. team that is of the same ilk as the Beavers. Selection would be stronger were it confirmed that “do everything” Jahii Carson (ankle), the 20 PPG lead guard of the Sun Devils, would be compromised more than originally expected. Arizona St. looked vulnerable in the 60-57 slow down loss to Miami, FLA. Of course, this will be at a whole different tempo.

NBA East covering just 41 percent of time versus West
                  By JASON LOGAN

The NBA’s Eastern Conference is having so much trash talk thrown its way, you’d swear it was guarding Gary Payton.

Players, pundits and fans are blasting the quality of basketball in the East, which heading into Friday’s schedule has just two teams with winning records - the Indiana Pacers (17-2) and Miami Heat (14-5). The other Eastern teams that were supposed to contend – Chicago, Brooklyn, New York - are a combined 17-36 SU.

Its Western Conference cousin, on the other hand, has nine teams above .500 and three others at 9-9. That makes for some lopsided records when the NBA’s two factions face off. Heading into Friday, Eastern Conference teams are just 26-63 SU and 36-52-1 ATS versus Western Conference teams – covering just 41 percent of the time in non-conference play.

On the road, visiting Western squads, Eastern Conference members are 18-24 SU and 14-28 ATS (33 percent) this season. However, while Western competition is an outstanding 39-8 SU on the road against Eastern foes, the West is only 24-22-1 ATS.

This one-sided dominance is nothing new to the NBA. The West has long been the deeper conference of the two. Looking back over the previous five seasons (2008-09 – 2012-13), the East is just 926-1,144 SU and 993-1,039-38 ATS – a 48 percent ATS winning rate. The East was actually 560-475 SU at Western opposition in that frame, but just 491-525-19 ATS (48 percent). The East went 366-669 SU and 502-514-19 ATS hosting Western teams in that five-season span.

The best East-at-West bets since 2008-09 aren’t necessarily the Eastern Conference’s elite. The Orlando Magic have a 40-33-1 ATS road record against the Western Conference while the New York Knicks (39-33-1 ATS) and Toronto Raptors (38-32-2 ATS) round out the top three.

The biggest Western Conference bullies when heading into Eastern areas are the Utah Jazz, who have gone 44-26-1 ATS versus the Eastern Conference on the road since 2008-09. The Golden State Warriors (43-28-0 ATS) and San Antonio Spurs (43-28-2 ATS) have all been solid road best at Eastern venues.

As for taking advantage of the Eastern Conference’s incompetence this weekend, the Boston Celtics host the Denver Nuggets (-4) and the Raptors visit the Phoenix Suns (-4) Friday night. Saturday’s schedule has the Nuggets in Philadelphia, L.A. Clippers at Cleveland, Miami at Minnesota and Indiana at San Antonio.
