Dunkel Ratings: New Mexico State 60.651; Drake 65.492
            Dunkel Line: Drake by 5
            Vegas Line: Drake by 1

The Army versus Navy game might not be as big of an event as it once was nationwide, but that doesn't matter because this game is about much more than just football. Pride is the first thing that comes to mind when speaking of this matchup. They should cover.

Review of (8) Coll Hoop games for Saturday

                        CBKB
Arizona at Michigan Noon ET CBS
This is a tough 10 am body time start for the No. 1 Wildcats. They do seem to have it all with an interior defender in Tarczewski, solid wings in Ashley and Gordon, and a solid back court in PG McConnell and Duke Johnson. Along with the coaching of Miller, it will be no surprise if they remain in the Top 5 all season long. They avoided the pressure of No. 1 with a midweek defensive gem against tricky New Mexico St. The only true road test has been a 69-60 win at San Diego St. Along the way was the marquee victory against Duke. In short, no knock on this team who under Miller is 32-18 ATS if they allowed 60 or less points in their previous game and who in his coaching career is 75-46 ATS in non con play. Championship runner up, Michigan, is struggling to replace the departed guard tandem of Burke and Hardaway. Frosh PG Walton is a winner, Stauskus has become a far more complete player, and McGary is a future NBAer. A trio of losses has already occurred at Iowa St., at Duke, and vs. underrated Charlotte. Four cupcakes have been devoured atChrisler, where Michigan is 36-2 SU L2+Y. Though Miller is familiar with the original Pittsburgh based concept of the amoeba zones offered by HC Belein, the concept of unlocking that puzzle is not so easy to translate to the young Wildcats.

Tennessee vs. Wichita St. 2:00 ET, In Trust Arena
Love what Cunzo Martin is doing at Tennessee. His hard-nosed, Big 10 concepts and inside-out offense are working well for triplets, Stokes on the inside and McRae and Barton on the outside. Since a stunning loss to UTEP, the Vols have ripped off a 3-0 SU ATS run covering by 21 points and allowing just 58 PPG. But it is rare that we back down from 7th year Wichita HC Marshall whose Final Four Wheatshockers are off to a 9-0 SU start, despite the loss of last year’s key pieces, interior force Hall and PG Armstead. With a solid defense allowing just 60/39/28 and the brilliant late game coaching of Marshall, the Shockers have opened 9-0 SU, 6-1 ATS including wins vs. the diverse styles of St. Louis and BYU. With the motivation of 60-69 revenge from last year and the benefit of no home impost from the In Trust Arena site, we confidently line up with Wichita St. to avenge last year’s defeat.

Notre Dame vs. Indiana 3:15 ET ESPN, Indianapolis, IN
All is not right in South Bend. Without the benefit of a physical defense,it will be tough for HC Brey to implement his “slow burn.” After viewing both Notre Dame midweek games at the Joyce Center, it is painfully obvious that they lack defensive quickness and front court scoring to complement a quality trio of guards in Atkins, Grant, and Connaughton. They have now failed in 3 consecutive home contests, beating Delaware by only 5, Bryant by only 11, and losing outright to N. Dak St. by 4. In so doing, they lost to the number by 21 points. Not good. Now, they must face an Indiana team who has fared surprisingly well in the early going, despite the loss of their own interior force Zeller and Olidapo. Crean has simply plugged-in experienced pieces and added an ever improving Frosh impact player in Vonleh. The result has been 7-2 SU, with losses by only 10 at Syracuse and 1 vs. UConn. The Irish are nowhere as good as either of those teams which will show today.

Min Tennessee St. at Mississippi 5:00 ET
The decline of the Blue Raiders was expected. Just 2 RS from a 28-6 NCAA team of last year has already lost at home by 12 to Belmont and by 20 on the road at Florida. Non con success has rarely been a part of the resume of 12th year HC Kermit Davis. Now, they visit Oxford on the wrong night. The Rebels are far more than Marshall Henderson dropping 3 point bombs. Jarvis Summers is a solid complement on the perimeter. Cox and Jones are dominant forces on the interior. But tonight, they host Mid Tenn following consecutive losses at Kansas St. by 3 and on this court last week to Oregon in a wild 115-105 OT loss. Combined with 65-62 revenge, for a loss at the Blue Raiders Murphy Center last year, it sets up an ideal situation. Rebs are 31-5 SU 2+Y on this court, while under 8thyear HC Kennedy, Ole Miss is 22-14 ATS home vs. non con. Lay it!

Kentucky at North Carolina 5:15 ET ESPN
Kentucky has already lost to Michigan St. by 4 and Baylor by 5 on neutral courts in their only 2 step-up games. This will be a yearlong maturation project under the tutelage of Calipari with another vaunted recruiting class. Two years ago, it evolved into a National Title. Last year, it never worked with the Wildcats losing to Robert Morris in the NIT. What we do know is that Calipari is a solid 37-23 ATS as underdog. In a similar way, North Carolina without key perimeter players Hairston and McDonald has been bad enough to lose on this court to Belmont by 3 and at UAB by 4. Yet, they have also recorded marquee wins vs. defending champion Louisville and then No. 1 Michigan St. Peripatetic! What we do know is that the Tar Heels are 49-4 SU on this court, 43-21 ATS to -9 at home, and 44-25 ATS hosting non-conference opponents. With more proven success with quality teams and the strength of their home court, the Tar Heels appear to be the value SIDE.

Purdue vs. Butler 6:00 ET BIG10, Bankers Life Fieldhouse
Under 9th year HC Painter, I thought the Boilers would be on a mission after winning 104 games the previous 4 seasons. Purdue dropped to 16 -18 last year, losing in the CBI QF. But the Boilers have disappointed a bit with a record of 3-5 ATS out of the gate. That includes losing by 10 to Oklahoma St. (trailed by 24), by 15 to Washington St., and defeating Siena and E. Michigan by only 5 points apiece. The rough and tumble ways of Big 10 Purdue will not intimidate a Butler team who has already been hardened by similar opponents as Purdue. In fact, in the same Holiday event, Butler beat Washington St. by 7, lost by only 2 to Oklahoma St. and 2 to LSU, covering all 3 of those games. Under 1st year HC Miller, the “Butler Way” continues. The Bulldogs are now 30-9 ATS on neutral floors, 3-0 TY and 41-13 ATS as dog to -1 vs. non con (2-0 TY). Based on comparative scores and history, this could be an easier than expected win for the Bulldogs.

West Virginia vs. Marshall 7:30 ET, Charleston, WV
In his 4th year at the helm, Marshall HC Herrion has much to prove. His 1sttwo seasons netted 43 victories making the 3 year run of the Herd total 67 wins. He stepped back to a 13-19 SU season of last and 1st round CUSA CCT loss. Though the Herd is 3-1 ATS out of the gate, a second division finish with just 1 RS is expected for Marshall. In preseason play, whereHerrion is 10-21 ATS, non con has never been a priority. Far prefer West Virginia, who even in last year’s down season won this matchup 69-59 as 5 point chalk. After needing plenty of meds to get through last year’s 13-19 SU debacle, and worst offensive team of his illustrious career, Huggins’ Mountaineers are on their own mission. Already, there has been a 2nd half meltdown at VA Tech and losses to quality teams Wisconsin by 7, Missouri by 9, and Gonzaga by 4. But all 5 victories, many against teams of a similar ilk to Marshall, have been by 13 or more points. It is because the Mountaineers offense has perked up considerably with averages of 83/47/43 and only 9 TOs per game. No doubt, the consumption of Maalox is far reduced for Huggins. He will also sleep easily tonight, after he puts away this in-state foe by double digits.

                        BYU at Utah 10:00 ET
If BYU perimeter players Haws and Carlino go off, the visiting Cougars will have their way in this. But in turning to a 94 ft. game, BYU HC Rose has exposed some major deficiencies. In short, the Cougars are one of the worst perimeter defensive teams allowing 78 PPG. Last weekend, we used a Top Play against BYU as UMass PG Williams consistently broke them down. There have also been losses to the divergent offensive styles of Wichita and Iowa St. Vastly underrated Utah is capable of the same. Clearly, the Utes were looking forward to this 61-58 revenge meet in their midweek matchup against Idaho St., when they trailed by double digits before recording a 74-66 win. Only a 69-67 loss at Boise, but easy cover, mars an otherwise perfect log which sees them stand 8-1 SU, 4-1 ATS. A quick look at the stats tells the story. The offensive numbers show the Utes averaging 86/55/36 with less than 10 TOs per game. On defense, they allowed just 61/39/25. A +9 rebound margin concludes the story. Although it is against a weaker slate than what BYU has faced, those numbers are impressive. Combine it with rivalry revenge from last season, a 37-18 ATS home mark, and 17-6 ATS non con mark under 3rdyear HC Krystowiak, and you got yourself a winner.

Michigan tries to take down No. 1 Arizona Saturday
                          by Mark Kern

Crisler Center - Ann Arbor, MI
                          Tip-off: Saturday 12:00 p.m.ET
                          Line: Michigan -2

No. 1 Arizona will face a difficult task on Saturday as it travels to Ann Arbor to take on Michigan at the Crisler Center.

The Wildcats are 10-0, but have shown the ability to win in dominating fashion, but also in a grind-it-out style as well. Three times this season, Arizona (7-3 ATS) has won by six points or less. Its most impressive victory was on Nov. 29, when it defeated Duke in the Champions Classic. While other freshmen across the country have gotten more recognition, Arizona PF Aaron Gordon (11.9 PPG, 8.5 RPG, 1.3 BPG) is as explosive as any athlete in the country. While he has struggled from the free throw line (45 percent), his ability to run the floor as a power forward makes the Arizona offense very difficult to stop. He will be matched up with PF Glenn Robinson III (12.2 PPG, 5.0 RPG, 1.9 APG) of Michigan, who also is able to run the floor well for a big man. While the Wolverines (3-4 ATS) have three losses on the season, the teams they have lost to have a combined record of 21-4. In those defeats, the Wolverines have been able to score only 66.7 PPG. Without Trey Burke running the point this season, the offense has struggled to play like it did last season. A lack of offensive efficiency could be a huge problem on Saturday, as Arizona has not given up more than 66 points in any of its 10 games this season.

The Wildcats are one of the best teams in the country when they get out and run, in large part due to the play of PF Aaron Gordon and SG Nick Johnson (15.7 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 2.4 APG). Johnson has improved from last season, allowing the game to come to him more this season, rather than trying to make all of the big plays. Very few guards possess the athletic ability that he has, as his father is “Jumpin” Joey Johnson. With Gordon and Johnson running the break, all that is needed is a point guard that can distribute the ball. While Mark Lyons was terrific last season for the Wildcats, he was not a natural point guard. However, this season Arizona has a true pass-first leader in PG T.J. McConnell (7.4 PPG, 6.7 APG, 3.9 RPG). McConnell does a great job of recognizing when the Wildcats should push the pace, or when they should slow it down and set up and offense. His assist-to-turnover ratio is an astounding 3.35. With SF Brandon Ashley (12.3 PPG, 6.6 RPG, 58% threes) having the ability to score from anywhere on the court, he is the perfect complement to the trio of Gordon, Johnson and McConnell. While Arizona is not the highest scoring team in the country (77.4 PPG, 93rd in nation), it does a great job of turning defense into offense. With the Wildcats' rebounding dominance (41.5 RPG, 23rd in nation), they are able to get the ball out and run, where they are at their best. For Michigan, they must turn this into a half-court game, or it could get out of control early.

PG Derrick Walton Jr. (9.2 PPG, 3.0 APG, 2.7 RPG) has been asked to step in as a freshman and fill the void left by Burke’s departure, and while showing potential, is still a work in progress. However, the biggest problem for the Wolverines has been an inability to rebound the ball, ranking 104th in the country with 38.0 RPG. With C Mitch McGary (9.7 PPG, 8.9 RPG, 2.1 SPG) and Robinson as the starting frontcourt, the rebounding should be much better. One positive for the Wolverines has been the improvements of SG Nik Stauskas (18.9 PPG, 3.5 RPG, 3.3 APG), who has emerged as one of the elite scorers in all of the country, hitting 50 percent of his three-point attempts (24-of-48). Also shooting the ball well has been SG Caris LeVert (13.9 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 2.4 APG) giving the Wolverines one of the best scoring perimeters in the Big Ten. Head Coach John Beilein has built the Wolverines program up, and while they have struggled early, there is more than enough talent to pull off the upset over Arizona.
