The Mets were swept by the Cubs at Wrigley Field the past few days, as New York heads to San Francisco tonight. New York has won each of the last five visits to AT&T Park, as Jon Niese has won each of his last three starts for the Mets. Matt Cain returns from the DL as he has failed to live up to ace status due to various injuries over the last year. San Francisco is rolling but this could be a letdown spot after a successful road trip at Cincinnati and St. Louis. I'll back the Mets to beat the Giants.
The Arizona Diamondbacks opened the season at 8-22 and appeared to be heading for a disasterous season, but they have gotten things turned around as they have played four games over .500 since the ugly start. The Braves offense has sunken to new lows as their 2-0 shutout loss to the Mariners yesterday was their seventh shutout loss of the season, and the offense has produced the second lowest runs in all of MLB. Julio Teheran has pitched very well, but his resume pitching as a road favorite over his career shows just a pedestrian 6-5 record with a negative return, and the Braves are just 2-6 in his last eight road starts from -110 to -150. Arizona has been showing value as a dog where they have taken four of five, and have won their last four seriees openers. Make the play on Arizona.
Boston is not playing very good baseball right now and hasn’t for most of the season. But the one situation where the defending World Champs have thrived is versus left-handed starters, where they have gone 13-8 while averaging 4.7 runs per game. That doesn’t bode well for Detroit starter Drew Smyly, who has a 7.71 ERA in his last three starts, allowing 22 hits and four home runs in 14 innings of work. We like Boston’s young starter Rubby De La Rosa, who was impressive in his first start earlier this week and will have the benefit of facing a struggling Detroit line-up for the first time. Tigers woes continue as the Sox break through for a much-needed win
