Larry Ness' 10* Preseason G.O.Y. (won Total GOY-Friday)-Sat
My 10* Preseason Game of the Year is on the Hou Texans at 8:00 ET.
The Falcons were “one play” from the Super Bowl in 2012 but suffered through a dismal 4-12 season in 2013. However, compared to Houston’s 2013 season, the Falcons had a terrific year. The Texans made the postseason in both 2011 and 2012 and were favored to win the AFC South (for the THIRD straight year) entering 2013 but after opening 2-0, the Texans would lose their final 14 games of the season (4-12 ATS). The ‘implosion’ cost Gary Kubiak his job and Houston brought in Bill O’Brien, best known for ‘saving’ the Penn St football program after the Jerry Sandusky scandal ripped that campus apart.
Atlanta won last week 16-10 at home over Miami in a fairly unimpressive effort but again, compared to Houston’s Week 1 effort, the Falcons looked like ‘world beaters!’ The Texans were shutout 32-0 by Arizona last week in their preseason opener., gaining just 172 yards (had just nine FDs) while allowing 407 yards. Ryan Fitzpatrick (signed as a free agent in the offseason and expected to be the starting QB) had an inauspicious debut, going 6-for-14 for 55 yards and was picked off twice. Top overall pick Jadeveon Clowney, who had sports hernia surgery in June, saw limited play and had one tackle in his first professional action.
Here’s the good news for Houston bettors. We can throw out last week, as this preseason situation is pretty ‘sweet.’ Things couldn’t have been any worse for Houston last week but the Texans return home for the first time under first-year head coach Bill O'Brien (note: 1st year head coaches were 4-0 SU at home last week). O'Brien has stated he needs to get his regulars on the same page as quickly as possible, so I’m expecting Houston’s starters to see some extra playing time in this one. As for Atlanta, priority No. 1 is keeping its players healthy.
Mike Smith entered the 2014 preseason just 7-17 SU in August games (he took over Atlanta in 2008) and that included a woeful 1-11 record the previous three season. Therefore, the team’s 16-10 win last week was somewhat of a surprise. Atlanta’s “dress rehearsal” game is next week at home vs the Titans, so don’t expect much from the Falcons in this one. As for Houston, the Texans play at Denver next week, so a win here almost HAS to be a priority. That’s the bet. Lay it!Comment
