Preview: Mariners (79-67) at Angels (92-55)

    Game: 1
    Venue: Angel Stadium of Anaheim
    Date: September 15, 2014 10:05 PM EDT

Don't tell Los Angeles Angels manager Mike Scioscia that his team has the luxury of a 10-game division lead.

For the Seattle Mariners, luxury is a word that is certainly not in their vocabulary.

The Angels will become the first team in baseball to clinch a playoff spot if they win Monday night in the opener of a four-game home set.

Los Angeles (93-56) failed to record its first 11-game win streak in 50 years with Sunday's 6-1 home defeat to Houston. The Angels' AL West advantage over Oakland was cut to 10 games with their magic number to win the division remaining at four, but Scioscia took no solace in that.

"No one's using the word 'luxury' around here," said the manager, whose team last reached the playoffs in 2009. "We were out there trying to win every game."

Seattle (80-68) is 12 1/2 games behind Los Angeles in third place and will be eliminated from division title contention with a loss Monday. The Mariners are more worried about the wild-card standings, sitting 2 1/2 games behind the Athletics and one behind Kansas City.

Manager Lloyd McClendon's club capped a 2-4 homestand with Sunday's 4-0 loss to Oakland, dropping two of three to one of the teams it is chasing. The Mariners have won eight of their last 10 on the road ahead of this 11-game trip.

'We haven't been good. The good part is we are going on the road where we have been real good,' McClendon said. 'You want to talk about improbable, that's about as improbable as you get.'

Something may have to give Monday in an enticing matchup of terrific right-handers.

The Angels have won seven straight starts by Matt Shoemaker (15-4, 3.16 ERA) while the Mariners' Hisashi Iwakuma (14-7, 3.11) is 5-0 with a 1.75 ERA in seven career starts against Los Angeles.

Shoemaker set a franchise record for wins by a rookie Wednesday by allowing one run in 6 2-3 innings of an 8-1 rout at Texas, improving to 6-0 with a 1.32 ERA in his sizzling seven-start stretch.

"I think Shoe is one of the big reasons why we're even contending," Scioscia said. "When he got his chance to get in the rotation, to do what he did is spectacular for us."

Shoemaker captured his lone start against the Mariners, giving up three runs over 5 1-3 innings in a 7-5 win May 29.

Pitchers may want to talk to Iwakuma about his astounding success against Mike Trout, who is 4 for 22 off him for his worst average (.182) versus anyone he has at least 15 at_bats against.

Albert Pujols is 3 for 22 off Iwakuma and has one hit in his last 14 at_bats.

Iwakuma went 5-0 with a 3.06 ERA in six outings before surrendering four runs in 4 1-3 innings in Wednesday's 5-2 loss to Houston.

Howie Kendrick is 7 for 19 off Iwakuma and is wielding a hot bat. The second baseman went 22 for 44 with seven extra-base hits - two homers - and 14 RBIs during a 10-game hitting streak that was snapped Sunday when he went 0 for 2.

Seattle's Dustin Ackley is expected to return to the lineup after missing two games with a sore left foot.

                'Runs at a premium'

The Opening matchup of a three game series is today’s baseball betting focus as Baltimore hosts Toronto this evening at Camden Yards. Left-hander Wei-Yin Chen will toe the rubber for the O's, bringing a 15-4 record, 3.59 ERA to the hill. After a shaky end to August posting a 4.34 ERA in his final three starts the hurler has got off to a solid September holding opponents to one run in 13 innings across two starts. Chen has faced Jays twice in his career losing both contests the most recent this past August giving up 4 runs over 5.0 innings in a 5-1 Baltimore loss. Chen will be matching pitches with Toronto’s right-hander Marcus Stroman, who has a 10-5 record, 3.61 ERA for the year and has won three straight starts while allowing just four runs over 22 2/3 innings of work. This will mark the rookies' first start against Orioles. The view from here is that with two hurler in dominating presence runs will be at a premium making 'Under' the best betting option. The 'Under' has been the correct choice when O's host a team with a winning record (9-19-2 O/U) and when Jays visit a team with a winning record (11-17-1 O/U). The fact that this game is the series opener is another positive for 'Under' gamblers, since the 'Under' is 15-8-1 in O's home series-opener's this season. The kicker, 'Under' has been the right play in 6-of-7 meetings at Camden Yards this season.

Luck, Colts Look To Get On Track Versus Eagles In High Scoring MNF Showdown

A slow start cost the Indianapolis Colts a chance to open the year with a win against Peyton Manning and the defending AFC champion Denver Broncos in week one. Now they will look to get on track against another playoff team from a year ago that completed a big comeback win of week one. Andrew Luck and the Colts will host Nick Foles and the Philadelphia Eagles in a battle of high-scoring offenses. Indianapolis is favored by three points and with so much firepower between these teams this could very easily come down to a shootout on Monday Night Football.

                  Philadelphia Eagles @ Indianapolis Colts
                  Monday September 15, 2014 - 8:30 PM ET
                  Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis, Indiana

                  NFL Betting line: Indianapolis -3

The Eagles came back from a 17-points halftime deficit to beat the Jacksonville Jaguars and save a lot of people their survivor pool pick. Avoiding turnovers is something Philadelphia did well a year ago but struggled with in its opener and that will be a point of emphasis for Chip Kelly’s team in week two.

                  NFL Betting Preview: Philadelphia Eagles

Foles had two fumbles and an interception in the first 20 minutes of the game against Jacksonville, nearly matching the four turnovers he had all of last season. It took Mark Sanchez warming up on the sideline for Foles to regain his composure and he finished strong with 183 passing yards and two touchdowns as he led the Eagles’ comeback. The tandem of LeSean McCoy and Darren Sproles will be key again as they look to keep the pressure off of Foles in the pocket while moving the football. The Philadelphia defense was exposed to big plays against Chad Henne and an average Jaguars’ offense last week and they will have a tough time slowing down Luck and the Colts.

                  NFL Betting Preview: Indianapolis Colts

Luck took some time to get going as well in week one but he ended up throwing for 370 yards and two touchdowns as Indianapolis came back to at least cover as a road underdog versus Manning and the Broncos. The Colts have three excellent receivers in TY Hilton, Reggie Wayne, and Hakeem Nicks and all three will see plenty of touches this week as the ground game continues to struggle with Trent Richardson and Ahmad Bradshaw failing to provide many big plays in week one. The Indianapolis defense rallied to hold Manning and the Broncos to a single second-half touchdown a week ago and will hope to carry over the momentum from that finish.

NFL Betting Preview: Outlook & Pick

Both of these offenses should put up plenty of points in week two but it’s the Colts that bring the better defense and home advantage in to this contest. Indianapolis can’t afford to fall to 0-2 with a loss at home so look for Luck and the Colts to put up some big numbers on this suspect Philadelphia defense while their own defense does just enough for them to cover.

NFL Betting Pick: Indianapolis Colts -3

                      Hondo tries another trey

The Niners christened Levi Stadium with a Sunday night collapse against the Bears that sent Hondo’s accounts payable sky-rocketing to 1,690 sabos.

A winning 3-2 day in the NFL on Sunday. One play for Monday Night Football on my card for Monday. I should receive my new phone today so I should be able to start sending the plays by text later this week. Best of luck.

                        3* (279) Philadelphia Eagles +3

There is a lot of love for Andrew Luck and the Colts in this Monday night match up. Maybe due to the struggles of the Eagles to put Jacksonville away in week one parlayed with the late charge that the Colts made in Denver last week. I'm not sold on this Colts team. Their defense is below average and this still don't have a running game to complement Andrew Luck and the passing game. The Eagles can run the ball and should be able to keep this Colts defense guessing all night long. This is also the second of back to back primetime games for Indianapolis. Teams playing in the second of back to back primetime games (Sunday night and Monday night only) are just are 1-17 against the spread in the last eighteen games. Take the points.
