Play the Detroit Tigers on the moneyline as my 7 Unit MLB Bookie Buster of the Year for Friday night. This pick falls into one of my top MLB systems and we are getting great value with Verlander after he got lit up in his last outing. Verlander is a veteran and he bounces back with his best outing since his return from the DL and the Tigers are a 100% perfect 7-0 in Verlander’s last 7 starts, after he lasted less than 4 innings in his previous start. The Tigers have hit .353 as a team lifetime against Porcello and the Red Sox have hit just .222 lifetime against Verlander. Opponents have hit .333 against Porcello over 3 starts in July and he has an ERA of 7.62 over those 3 starts. The Red Sox have dropped 8 straight and the Tigers are 5-1 in their last 6 games against the Red Sox. Play the Detroit Tigers with extreme confidence tonight.
5-unit Play ‘GOW’ – Take #970 Boston Red Sox (-135) over Detroit Tigers (7:10pm EST) Oh how the mighty Justin Verlander has fallen. Just three seasons ago, Verlander was unquestionably the most dominating pitcher in the game, taking home both Cy Young and MVP trophies. It’s not certain why Verlander has completely fallen off a cliff in the last couple of seasons, but that’s not important. What is important is that the betting markets are still expecting Verlander to eventually get back on track in 2015. I don’t see that happening any time soon. It’s quite possible that Verlander has gone from the best pitcher in baseball to the very worst. Coming into tonight’s game, the big right-hander is 0-3 with a 6.62 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in six starts. More importantly, his strikeout rate is all the way down to 5.8 per nine innings and he’s walking over 3 batters per nine. The Red Sox haven’t produced like they should have this season, but their offense is still capable of putting up crooked numbers. And luckily for them, Verlander has been giving up a lot of those in the last two years.
Boston will counter with former Tigers hurler Rick Porcello. He has some pretty ugly numbers as well, but for Porcello it’s really been more about bad luck than horrible pitching. His peripheral numbers actually were better than last year in many respects, when he posted a strong 3.43 ERA in Detroit. I expect Porcello to completely turn things around in the second half and create some value for bettors. One other big factor in this game for Porcello is that Miguel Cabrera is still missing from the Tigers lineup. That point can’t be overstated as he is still the best pure hitter in our game today. Boston blasts Verlander, Porcello pitches well, and the Red Sox get the victory in our Game of the Week.
Washington has a losing road record, but hopes to turn things around with its ace going. However, Max Scherzer has lost three of his last four starts and hasn’t been helped much by an offense that has produced a total of four runs during that span. The Nationals are also 0-4 in Scherzer’s last four starts following a team loss in their previous game. Pittsburgh is a dominant home team (33-16), and the Pirates are 49-21 at home against a right-handed starter. The Pirates have Jeff Locke going, with 2.58 ERA at home, and the Pirates are 15-5 in his last 20 home starts. With the Nationals 1-4 in the last five meetings in Pittsburgh, grab home field. Play Pittsburgh.
