4 Unit Play. #736 Take Rhode Island -12 over St. Josephs (7 pm CBSSN) The Hawks were already having a rebuilding year to start the season and now with the loss of Shavar Newkirk (over 20 points per game) I do not see things going well during A-10 play. The Hawks have yet to record a quality win on the season and they will get blown out in this game. Rhode Island lost both games to them last year and the Rams need to put together a winning streak to keep them at-large bid hopes alive. They have the three best players on the court in this game and expect them to pull away in the second half and win this game by around 17-20 points. St. Joes is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games as an underdog. The Rams are 17-4 ATS in their last 21 games as a home favorite of 7 to 12.5 points.
4 Unit Play. #739 Take Wisconsin -1.5 over Indiana (7 pm ESPN) Tom Crean just cannot stay off the hot seat. Indiana has already lost four times in-state this season and this is the second-best team that they will have faced this season. Wisconsin does not have a win against an NCAA Tournament quality team this season but they have experience and have had great success against Indiana in recent years. Wisconsin has covered the spread in 6 of their last 7 games.
4 Unit Play. #750 Take TCU -9.5 over Oklahoma (9 pm ESPN U) TCU is going to be a tough out at home all season long. Oklahoma has fallen off a cliff this season after reaching the Final Four last year with a senior laden team. They may be without Jordan Woodard again tonight and that is a major void they will not be able to overcome. The Frogs have been winning big at home all season long and gave Kansas a good battle last Friday night. This team has a chance to make the NCAA Tournament but this is a must win game for them to accomplish that. Oklahoma is 7-22 ATS in their last 29 Big 12 games. TCU has covered the spread in 7 of their last 8 home games.
NCAA-B: Take #741 East Carolina v #742 UCF UNDER (121½ -105) (7:15 PM EST) at BetOnline
*3 Star College Hoops Total DOMINATION* The UCF Knights are playing some tremendous defense under new coach Johnny Dawkins this year. UCF ranks first in the nation in effective field goal percentage defense. Tacko Fall is 7'6 and he stands in the middle of the zone on defense, which obviously makes this a hard team to get to the hoop against. UCF is allowing opponents to shoot only 36.3% on two point field goals. That is easily best in the country.
East Carolina's offense hasn't been efficient at all this year. The Pirates are averaging only 0.944 points per possession on the year (1.02 last year). East Carolina scored only 35 points in a home loss to College of Charleston a couple weeks ago. They scored only 44 points in their last game against SMU. East Carolina should have a lot of trouble scoring here.
East Carolina's defense is 10th in effective field goal percentage defense, so they are very good as well.
Both of thes e teams rely on free throws a lot on offense, but these two teams rank in the top ten in the country in defending without fouling.
Both of these teams play slow and I expect a tempo of somewhere around 63 or 64 possessions.
Take the under.
(3% play) NORTH CAROLINA -2.5/-3 (at Clemson) - 7:00 pm ET (espn2) #737
North Carolina opened conference play with an ugly 75-63 loss at Georgia Tech on Saturday afternoon. The Tar Heels played their worst game of the season while shooting just 33.3% (24-for-72) from the field and 19.2% (5-for-26) from three-point land. North Carolina was also quite sloppy with the ball as they committed 20 turnovers while only getting to the free throw line 14 times. North Carolina’s players admitted they took their opponent for granted: “It was a bigger game for them,” Joel Berry said. “We thought that we were going to come in here and just win because it’s Georgia Tech.” Off such an embarrassing performance, we expect North Carolina to bounce back with a strong effort just like they’ve done all season. In two games following a loss this season, the Tar Heels are a perfect 2-0 SU while winning those games by 45 and 43 points.
Clemson comes into tonight’s game with an impressive 11-2 SU record. However, the Tigers have played an extremely easy schedule with their toughest opponent being Xavier; Clemson lost that game 83-77. Clemson was trailing Wake Forest by 10 points with less than 5 minutes to play in their last game before ending that game on a 15-0 run for the comeback win. That’s not a good sign heading into this game against North Carolina, especially since Clemson is now taking a monumental step up in class. Clemson has solid seasonal numbers on defense, but they’ve played a schedule loaded with mediocre offenses. Now they will face one of the best offensive teams in the country, and they are catching them off an ugly offensive performance. North Carolina will have too much offense for Clemson, so we’ll back the Tar Heels in this game on Tuesday night.
Paul Leiner:Sorry guys, USC blew two 13 point leads and had to fight back even to win the game. Bad call on my part. Tonight we bounce back with a big College hoops play.
