CFL Betting Recap - Week 9

        League Betting Notes

-- Favorites went 4-0 SU in Week 9
-- Favorites went 4-0 ATS in Week 9
        -- Home/road teams posted a 2-2 SU record in Week 8
        -- Home/road teams posted a 2-2 ATS record in Week 8
-- The 'Under' went 2-1-1 in Week 9

        Analysis

It was a 'chalky' week in the CFL as all four favorites won straight up and against the spread. All four of the matchups were divisional battles and things got a little interesting in the competitive West as Edmonton suffered its first loss of the season while Calgary inched closer with a road victory.

Even though we saw three teams post 30-plus points on the scoreboard, the 'under' produced a 2-1-1 record in Week 9.

        Team Betting Notes

-- For the second straight week, British Columbia looked like a different team, especially on the offensive side of the ball. After getting embarrassed 41-8 at Saskatchewan in Week 8, the Lions were stifled 21-17 at home last Friday. It was the first time this season that BC had dropped back-to-back games. The 'under' has now cashed in three straight and is 6-3 overall.

-- Edmonton's chances of going undefeated this season were haulted on Friday as the club dropped a 33-26 decision at Winnipeg. The Eskimos were listed as short road underdogs and were catching points for just the third time this season. The 'over' connected in the setback and is now 4-1 in their last five games.

-- Hamilton (0-8) remained winless on the season as it suffered a 37-18 home loss to Ottawa on Friday. The Tiger-Cats actually held a 10-6 lead after the first quarter at Tim Horton's Stadium before getting outscored 31-8 over the final 45 minutes. The T-Cats haven't held an opponent under 30 points this season, which has helped the 'over' go 5-2-1. The team will be off in Week 10 and returning on Sept. 4 versus Toronto.

-- The Alouettes and Argonauts completed their home-and-home series on Saturday and Toronto earned the split at home. Montreal earned a 21-9 win at home in Week 8 but it was all Argos on Saturday as they cruised to a 38-6 victory. They led 35-0 at halftime but only a combined nine points were scored in the final 30 minutes, which helped the 'under' sweep the series. With the win, Toronto is back in first place of the East division.

-- The RedBlacks snapped their second three-game skid of the season on Friday with a road win over Hamilton. Bettors should note that Ottawa is now 4-0 ATS on the road this season despite going 1-3 SU.

-- The Blue Bombers extended their winning streak to four games this past Thursday with their 33-26 home win over previously unbeaten Edmonton. The club is 3-1 ATS during this run and is 6-2 overall versus the number, which is the best mark in the CFL. Winnipeg hits the road for back-to-back games over the next two weeks.

-- Saskatchewan was on bye in Week 9 but will be tested next Friday when its visits Edmonton, who is coming off its first defeat of the season.

                  Now about this complimentary winner

My free winner for Friday is on the Chicago White Sox over the Detroit Tigers, and I want you to list Justin Verlander and Miguel Gonzalez.

First of all, the Tigers are going to be shook after yesterday's free-for-brawl with the New York Yankees. After all that went down yesterday, and now having to travel, I just think the Tigers will be out of sync.

Second, Verlander is 3-6 with a 5.24 ERA away from Comerica Park this year, including a stint he gave up three home runs last week at Texas.

Gonzalez has been a different pitcher since the All-Star break, going 3-2 with a 3.07 ERA while posting six quality starts in seven outings.

3* WHITE SOX (Gonzalez over Verlander)

10* MLB FREE PICK (Indians -126)

This is simply too good of a price to pass up on the Indians at home. Cleveland will turn to spot starter Ryan Merritt, who has pitched well in this spot, posting a 3.52 ERA in 2 previous spot starts this season. I look for Merritt to keep KC in check, as the Royals come in averaging just 3.7 runs over their last 7 games. I also don't like Kansas City starter Jason Vargas, who has a 7.15 ERA in his last 8 starts but continues to get respect due to his solid overall numbers from his 2.22 ERA in his first 16 starts. Give me the Indians -126!

Play on: Brewers +176 at 5Dimes

Not many will be stepping in front of the Dodgers right now but certain situations call for it and this is one of those. Los Angeles returns home following a 5-2 roadtrip where it is 51-14 including a 42-9 record over its last 51 games. The Dodgers are chasing history as they became the fourth fastest team to reach 90 wins and they are going to be a publicly bet team for the rest of the season no matter the price. Milwaukee is off to a 3-3 start to the roadtrip and it now sits three games behind the Cubs in the National League Central and three games behind Arizona for the second Wild Card spot in the National League. The Brewers were off yesterday and have won four of their last five games following an off day. They send Chase Anderson to the hill and he is a big reason for going against the Dodgers in this spot. He is having a quietly exceptional season as he has a 2.83 ERA and 1.10 WHIP which would put him at No. 4 and No. 5 respectively in the National League but he does not qualify due to not having tossed enough innings. This is his second start since coming back from the disabled list and he was solid on a limited pitch count and he will be good to go further tonight. The Dodgers counter with Kenta Maeda who is also having a very good season but his lone issue has been not being able to go deep in games as only four of his 20 starts have been quality outings. The Brewers have won six of their last eight games against right-handed starters. Play (963) Milwaukee Brewers

MLB | Orioles vs Red Sox
Play on: Red Sox -150 at GTBets

Free Pick on Red Sox -

I'll take my chances here with the Red Sox at home, as they look to bounce back from a rare bad start from their ace Chris Sale in yesterday's 6-13 loss to the Indians. What I like is the fact that Boston's offense has now 6+ runs in 3 straight games. They should be able to stay hot at the plate against Orioles starter Jeremy Hellickson, who has allowed 13 runs on 13 hits (6 HRs) in his last two starts. Hellickson faced Boston once this season back in June and it wasn't pretty, as he allowed 6 runs on 9 hits in a 3-7 loss.

Red Sox will counter with Rick Porcello, who has been a disappointment at 8-14 with a 4.48 ERA in 26 starts this season. However, he's been on a roll here of late, posting a solid 2.84 ERA and 1.158 WHIP in his last 3 starts (Red Sox have won his last 4 starts). He's also got a strong 3.69 ERA in 11 starts against division opponents this season and has not allowed more than 3 earned runs in his last 4 outings against the Orioles.

Baltimore is just 6-20 in their last 26 as a dog of +125 to +175 and 1-12 in their last 13 road games after 2 straight games where they didn't commit an error. Red Sox are 36-18 on the season after a loss, 10-2 in their last 12 at home, 13-3 in their last 16 against a right-handed starter and a perfect 6-0 in their last 6 at home against a team that's won fewer than 40% of their road games. Take Boston!

                              Play on: UNDER 9½ -105

DMack's Free MLB Play for Friday, August 25, 2017 is on the Mariners/Yankees Under

Just a good spot for this game to go under this ultra-generous 9.5 runs. Ariel Miranda's numbers aren't great but he faced the Bombers on 7/22 and got the win going 5 2/3 allowing two earned on five hits. Sabathia has been good all year, his L3 starts have gone Under and the Under is 14-6 in his starts this year. The big man has always owned the M's and is 15-6 with a 2.63 ERA in 28 LT starts against the Safecos. Add to the mix that Seattle is 16-5 to the low ball as a road dog of this price and we have a reasonably strong case.

Let's take a shot with the Miami Marlins on the Run Line today at a nice underdog price. The Marlins have quietly been money making machines with their 10-3 run over the last two weeks that has gotten them back to .500 at 63-63 on the season. Adam Conley has only allowed 4 earned runs in 13 1/3 innings over his last two starts. He faced San Diego earlier this season, yielding only 1 earned run in 6 innings. Travis Wood is 2-2 with a 5.49 ERA in eight starts this year for the Padres. He's 0-1 with an 8.10 ERA in two road starts. Wood is also 1-3 with a 9.00 ERA in four previous starts against the Marlins.
