Trend of the Week: USC vs Western Michigan
No. 4 USC will kick off the season Saturday at home against the Broncos of Western Michigan. This is the first time the Trojans are facing a team from the MAC. The team to beat in the Pac-12 opened as 26-point favorites but the smart bet is on the total. Should you bet the OVER or UNDER?
We know weather can impact scoring. Games with high temperature and little wind lead to more points. This is amplified in non-conference games because teams are less familiar with one another. The total opened at 58.5 and the play is on the OVER.

Top 25 Teams at Neutral Sites: Who Prevails?
There are a handful of games this week at neutral sites, some of which are being played in NFL stadiums. The two biggest and most bet on games of the week — FSU vs. Alabama and Michigan vs. Florida — will be played at AT&T Stadium and the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium, respectively. Since home field advantage is such an important factor, especially in college, who has the upper hand at a neutral site?
Two ranked teams don’t face off in neutral locations very often — just 55 times since 2005 — but the higher ranked teams have reigned supreme, going 32-20-3 ATS and 38-17 straight up. This has been especially true in recent years, with the higher ranked team going 24-12 ATS since 2010.
Last season, three of four higher ranked teams covered with the only exception being the 13-point underdog Houston team upsetting Oklahoma 33-23.
This week, Alabama (#1) is of course higher than Florida State (#3) and Michigan (#11) is six spots higher than Florida (#17).
Lines have been open for these big ticket games for over two months now so there has been plenty of time for books to take action. At the moment, we’ve tracked almost twice as many bets on the Alabama game than the Michigan game, which is the second highest-bet of the week. Bettors are currently backing Alabama and Michigan, but both lines are down half a point since they opened.
Alabama had reached -6.5 earlier in the week, but they’re back up to -7 at both Bookmaker and Pinnacle. They’re getting 57% of spread bets at the time of publication.
Michigan had reached -4.5 a couple of weeks ago, but the line has been bet down to a field goal since then despite 66% of tickets being on the Wolverines.Comment

Here on Saturday, this one is worthy of a free play.
One important thing to look at here is how Louisville is going to pick apart the Boilermakers defense. The Cardinals had one of the most prolific offenses in the NCAA last season.
QB Lamar Jackson is extremely explosive and will pick apart this Purdue defense, that is extremely young and inexperienced.
On top of that, we saw the Boilermakers pick up some offense steam last year, especially down the stretch. They'll get a Cardinals defense that is very vulnerable in the secondary and as big underdogs here, they know they'll have to take chances down field if they hope to pull off the upset.
Some trends to note. Over is 4-0 in Cardinals last 4 games in September. Over is 9-3 in Cardinals last 12 games on fieldturf.
Expect a high powered, high scoring affair here.

The oddsmaker has set this total too short. Wyoming is going to get its share of points behind Josh Allen, one of the best quarterbacks in the country. Allen lost some talent around him, but Wyoming's offensive system is in place and Allen has the needed mobility and arm to put up points on a Hawkeyes defense that is tough up front, but inexperienced in the secondary and will be minus suspended cornerback Manny Rugamba. C.J. Beathard has moved to the pros, but the Hawkeyes don't need an ace triggerman against Wyoming with their tremendous rushing attack. Akrum Wadley and James Butler are both excellent runners and they have the advantage of rushing behing one of the top offensive lines in the country. Iowa's offensive line easily will handle Wyoming's rush defense, which is far worse than its secondary, at the point of attack. The Cowboys gave up an average of 42.5 points on the road last season.Comment

The Hawkeyes, for the 2nd consecutive year, enter the new season with the weight of a bowl embarrassment hanging over their heads. In the 2015 Rose Bowl they losst 45-16, to Stanford, and in the 2016 Outback Bowl they lost 30-3, to Florida (23 & 24 point spread losses). A year ago, this one would have seemed like a very easy to start the season, but the Cowboys have suddenly become formidable, averaging 37.7 points per game in their last 9 games. Iowa's attack was horrible as they came in a ranked #121 in total offense. The Hawkeye defense however was another matter as they ranked #23, but with Iowa State up next on the schedule, Iowa may have to be at its best and just put this one on cruise control.Comment

I'm recommending a play on Vanderbilt minus the points on Saturday. The line has dropped quite a bit and the value lies with the SEC entry. While Vandy will be better through the air in 2017 than it was a season ago, I fully expect the Commodores to be run-heavy in this one. The SEC entry had no trouble up front against MTSU in last year's 47-24 win, rushing for more than 230 yards. We respect MTSU QB Brent Stockstill and the Blue Raiders' offensive attack, but Vandy should be able to move the chains and control the clock by pounding the ball right at the heart of the defense again. The 'Dores own one of their best skill groups in quite some time and we believe play-action will work well, set-up by ground game success early-on. Vandy looks to extend their covering streak to five against C-USA, which would take them to 11-1 ATS in their last 12 against this conference. Maryland vs Texas Free Pick September 2, 2017 The Longhorns really underachieved last year, losing seven of 12 games. Five of those seven losses came by a TD or less. The Horns had back to back Top 10 recruiting classes under Charlie Strong, and they are returning most of their talent from last season. When Charlie Strong left Texas, he said: "Whoever coaches Texas next year will win 10 games". That was before they hired Tom Herman, who was 22-4 at Houston, and 6-0 against Top 25 teams. The Horns will play Maryland in their season opener, and I expect this game to be a blowout. Maryland might expect to be better this year, but they'd have to be an awful lot better in order to compete with a ranked team on the road. The Terrapins faced three ranked teams last year, losing all three of those games by at least three TDs. I actually like Texas as a longshot to win the BIG12 this year, and wouldn't be surprised if they emerge as a playoff contender. Take TEXAS. GL,Comment

I think the books have set the total too high for Saturday's non-conference action that has Wyoming out of the Mountain West traveling to take on the Big Ten's Iowa Hawkeyes. While a lot of programs are shifting to the more up-tempo attack that has been having so much success in college football, Iowa has continued to run a pro-style attack that is built on grinding out their opponents with the running game and strong defense.
Iowa figures to grind out a lot of possessions this year, as they work in a new starting quarterback. With one of the top offensive lines in the country and a talented senior running back, they should be able to do just that.
Wyoming's defense wasn't great last year, but with 8 starters back I expect head coach Craig Bohl to have his best defense yet, especially when it comes to stopping the run. That's ideal here, as even if Iowa is able to score, they figure to eat up the clock in the process. For those that don't know, Bohl is the guy responsible for turning North Dakota State into the FCS power it is today. He will have this team ready for the Hawkeyes.
As for the Cowboys offense, I think it's a bit overrated coming into the year. That's because fans have heard how their starting QB could be a 1st round pick next year. I watched this team and I think he's got a ways to go before he's starting in the NFL. The hype around him has a lot of people overlooked the loss of running back Brian Hill, who was the star of this offense last year with 1,860 yards and 22 touchdowns. Not to mention Wyoming also has to replace their top 3 receivers.
Iowa has been one of the most consistent teams in the country in fielding a quality defense and this year should be no different with 8 starters back. I wouldn't be shocked if neither team reached 20 points. Take the UNDER 50.5!Comment

The NC State Wolfpack are coming off their third straight bowl season under Dave Doeren. They went 7-6 after their 41-17 win over Vanderbilt, but were better than that record. They had four losses by a touchdown or less.
Two of those were against two of the best teams in the country. They only lost 17-24 at national champion Clemson in overtime after missing a potential game-winning field goal. They also lost 20-24 to Florida State at home. This team proved they could play with the big boys.
Now Doeren has his best team yet as he enters his 5th season with the program. The Wolfpack return a whopping 17 starters this season. Everyone is talking about FSU, Clemson and Louisville in the ACC Atlantic Division, but don't sleep on the Wolfpack because they will be a surprise contender.
The offense has nine starters back, including QB Ryan Finley, each of his top four receivers, and four starters along the offensive line. The defense only allowed 22.8 points per game last year and has eight starters back, including one of the best defensive lines in the country.
South Carolina was extremely fortunate to make a bowl game in Will Muschamp's first season. The Gamecocks went 6-7, but their six wins came against mostly suspect competition, and all six wins came by 13 points or less, including four by 6 points or fewer.
The Gamecocks only beat UMass by 6, East Carolina by 5 and Western Carolina by 13, all at home. They played Clemson to give them a common opponent with NC State, and suffered their worst loss of the season in a 7-56 loss in their regular season finale. I expect this to be one of the worst teams in the SEC in 2017.
The Wolfpack are 11-2 ATS in their last 13 non-conference games, including 9-1 ATS in their last 10 games in September. Doeren has gotten them off to a fast start basically every season in his time here, and I think that will be the case with a blowout win over South Carolina in the 2017 opener.
