    Sep 27, 2017

The Arizona Diamondbacks have to wait another week before hosting the National League wild-card game, but J.D. Martinez already is in postseason form. Martinez looks to maintain his torrid pace Wednesday as the Diamondbacks continue their three-game series against the visiting San Francisco Giants, who need one victory over their final four games to avoid their first 100-loss season since 1985.

Martinez went 3-for-4 with a grand slam and six RBIs in Tuesday’s 11-4 victory, giving him 15 home runs this month and 28 in 58 games since joining Arizona in a trade with Detroit. The Diamondbacks clinched their first playoff berth since 2011 on Sunday and plan to play most of their regulars during this weekend’s series at Kansas City. “My thought is to continue playing the type of baseball we've played all year long and not take anything for granted,” manager Torey Lovullo told reporters. “And not take days off or ho-hum our way through the next several games, because no team is good enough to just turn that switch on and be ready for such an important game on Wednesday.” The Giants own the worst record in the majors at 62-96 but received an encouraging effort Tuesday from rookie reliever Reyes Moronta, who struck out the side in a scoreless sixth inning.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Jeff Samardzija (9-15, 4.51 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks RH Braden Shipley (0-1, 5.40)

Samardzija lost his third straight start on Friday, giving up four runs over 4 1/3 innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 32-year-old has reached the 200-inning mark for the fifth consecutive season and needs one more win to become the only Giants starting pitcher with double digits in victories this season. Jake Lamb is 6-for-16 with a home run against Samardzija, who is 3-4 with a 4.32 ERA in 16 career games (11 starts) versus Arizona - including a 1-3 mark and 5.13 ERA in four outings this year.

Shipley is making a spot start in place of ace Zack Greinke, who was pushed back to Friday so he can stay on normal rest for the wild-card game on Oct. 4. Shipley last started on June 4 against Miami, allowing five runs - four earned - over five innings. The 25-year-old has posted a 1.50 ERA in five relief appearances at home this season compared to a 6.89 ERA in four games (two starts) on the road.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Martinez has collected 35 RBIs this month, tying a club record set by Luis Gonzalez in June 2001.

    2. Giants MGR Bruce Bochy said RHP Matt Cain will start one of the first two games of this weekend’s series against San Diego.

    3. Arizona RHP Archie Bradley has held opponents scoreless in 24 of his last 26 appearances.

    PREDICTION: Giants 5, Diamondbacks 4

GAME: Baltimore Orioles (75-83) at Pittsburgh Pirates (72-85)
        DATE/TIME: Wednesday, September 27 - 7:05 PM EST
        WHERE: PNC Park, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

        Preview: Orioles at Pirates

        Gracenote
        Sep 27, 2017

Although the sample size is relatively small, Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen has tormented the Baltimore Orioles throughout his career. McCutchen took it to another level in Tuesday's 10-1 drubbing of the visiting Orioles and looks to continue his success when the teams end their two-game series Wednesday night at PNC Park.

McCutchen went 4-for-4 with two homers, including his first career grand slam, and eight RBIs to raise his batting average against Baltimore to .500 (25-for-50) in 13 games. Fellow outfielder Starling Marte, who bats in front of McCutchen, has hit safely in seven straight games after collecting a pair of hits and scoring three times to lift Pittsburgh to its third straight win. It was the ninth loss in 12 games for the Orioles, whose beleaguered pitching staff has been pummeled for at least eight runs in eight of their last nine setbacks. Rookie left fielder Trey Mancini had one of Baltimore's five hits to extend his hitting streak to a career-best 15 games.

        TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Baltimore), AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Gabriel Ynoa (2-2, 3.41 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Chad Kuhl (7-11, 4.31)

Shifted to the starting rotation earlier this month, Ynoa was outstanding against Tampa Bay on Thursday, going a season-high eight innings and allowing one run on five hits. He lost his previous two starts - each on the road at the New York Yankees and Cleveland - by allowing six runs over a combined nine innings. Ynoa owns a 2.78 ERA at home compared to a 5.00 ERA on the road.

Kuhl has pitched reasonably well since a 12-start winless drought earlier this season, but he was tagged for four solo home runs over 4 2/3 innings of a loss at Cincinnati last time out. The 25-year-old yielded seven earned runs over his previous five starts but went only 2-2 in that span. Kuhl faced the Orioles at Baltimore in June, pitching five innings of one-run ball in a no-decision.

        WALK-OFFS

        1. McCutchen's eight RBIs were one shy of the franchise record and the most by a Pittsburgh player since Jason Bay on July 2, 2004.

        2. Orioles 1B Chris Davis ran his hitting streak to five games after swatting his 26th homer Tuesday.

        3. Pirates OF-2B Adam Frazier has three two-hit games in his last four.

        PREDICTION: Pirates 5, Orioles 4

The New York Yankees are not done yet in their pursuit of the American League East title and look to move a little closer when they host the Tampa Bay Rays for the middle contest of their three-game series on Wednesday. The Yankees won for the 17th time in 23 contests with a 6-1 triumph on Tuesday and moved within three games of first-place Boston in the AL East with five remaining.

Aaron Judge extended his hitting streak to nine games (13-for-32, seven homers, 13 RBIs) and Starlin Castro remained hot with three hits to improve to 6-for-10 over his last three contests for New York. Luis Severino, who is slated to pitch in the AL wild-card game on Tuesday if the Yankees don’t win the division, will take the mound Wednesday in his final regular-season start while Tampa Bay counters with Matt Andriese. The Rays officially were eliminated from playoff contention with their 11th loss in 17 games against New York this season, but Steven Souza Jr. went 3-for-3 and has scored six runs in his last five contests. Wilson Ramos is 8-for-14 with eight RBIs over his last four games after knocking in Tampa Bay's only run with a sacrifice fly as New York center fielder Aaron Hicks robbed him of a grand slam in the first inning.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays RH Matt Andriese (5-4, 4.44 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Luis Severino (13-6, 3.03)

Andriese is winless in his last seven appearances after posting a quality start against Baltimore last time out, when he allowed three runs over six innings on Thursday. The 28-year-old Californian is 0-3 with a 7.20 ERA in five outings since coming off the disabled list and 1-4 with a 5.60 ERA on the road in 2017. Judge is 5-for-9 with two homers versus Andriese, who is 2-2 with a 5.64 ERA in seven career games (five starts) against the Yankees.

Severino ended a stretch of six straight quality starts last time out as he allowed three runs on five hits and a walk across three innings against likely wild-card game opponent Minnesota. The 23-year-old Dominican registered a 1.55 ERA over his previous six turns and is 8-2 since the All-Star break. Corey Dickerson is 4-for-8 with a homer against Severino, who is 4-1 with a 3.06 ERA in nine career games (five starts) versus the Rays.

            3. Rays 3B Evan Longoria needs one homer to reach 20 for the ninth time in his first 10 major-league seasons.

                Gracenote
                Sep 27, 2017

Bryce Harper successfully hurdled the first obstacle simply by making his return from a six-week absence due to a knee injury. After being eased in for five innings in his first contest since Aug. 12, Harper looks to continue to work out the kinks Wednesday as the Washington Nationals play the rubber match of their three-game series against the host Philadelphia Phillies.

The 2015 National League Most Valuable Player was "like a little kid on opening Little League day," said manager Dusty Baker, who plans to incorporate Harper into game action as if it were spring training in hopes he's ready to go full throttle in the NL Division Series. Former Phillie Howie Kendrick belted a solo shot in Washington's 4-1 loss on Tuesday and is 2-for-3 with a homer versus series finale starter Mark Leiter Jr. Philadelphia's Tommy Joseph has tormented Washington this season, collecting two hits on Tuesday to improve to 15-for-47 with three homers, 10 RBIs and nine runs scored versus the Nationals. The 26-year-old is 5-for-15 with a solo homer in his career against Wednesday starter Tanner Roark.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, MASN (Washington), CSN Philadelphia

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH Tanner Roark (13-10, 4.41 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Mark Leiter Jr. (3-6, 4.69)

Roark has dominated the Phillies since the start of the 2016 season, posting a 4-0 mark with a 1.87 ERA and 0.97 WHIP. The 30-year-old overcame two homers and three runs overall in six innings of a 4-3 win over Philadelphia on Sept. 7. Roark answered that performance with another strong six-inning effort, but sustained the loss on Thursday despite yielding three runs over seven innings of a 3-2 setback at Atlanta.

Leiter owned a 2-4 mark in his previous six starts before receiving a no-decision on Thursday despite allowing one earned run in six innings versus the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 26-year-old was taken deep once by the Dodgers and has surrendered seven homers in September, during which he owns a 7.17 ERA in four starts. Leiter's lone win this month came at the expense of Washington, as he overcame a pair of blasts and four runs total in a 5-4 victory on Sept 9.

                WALK-OFFS

                1. Washington is locked into the second seed in the playoffs and will host the NL Central champion - either the Chicago Cubs or Milwaukee - in the division series.

                2. Phillies C Cameron Rupp, who had a two-run double Tuesday, is 11-for-36 with two homers, nine RBIs and five runs scored versus the Nationals this season.

                3. Nationals SS Trea Turner is 1-for-9 in the series and 10-for-57 versus Philadelphia this season.

                PREDICTION: Nationals 4, Phillies 2

                    Sep 27, 2017

The Chicago Cubs will take a second crack at clinching their second straight National League Central title when they play the third contest in a four-game road series against the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday. The Cubs need one win or one Milwaukee loss to wrap up the division, while the Cardinals are fighting to stay afloat in the NL wild-card race.

The Cardinals held on for an 8-7 win Tuesday to even the series at a game apiece and remain 2 1/2 games behind Colorado for the final playoff spot. Chicago’s magic number to clinch the division remained at one with the Cubs’ loss and the Brewers’ 7-6 win over Cincinnati. The loss was only the Cubs’ third in their last 14 games and their fifth in 17 meetings with the Cardinals in 2017. Right-hander John Lackey will try to pitch the Cubs to the clincher in his former home park of Busch Stadium, where he is 13-4 with a 2.10 ERA in 25 career starts.
TV: 7:08 p.m. ET, ESPN, CSN Chicago, FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs RH John Lackey (11-11, 4.67 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Michael Wacha (12-8, 4.00)
Lackey is winless in his last three starts and has failed to get through five innings in his last two outings. The 38-year-old gave up two homers and left without recording an out in the fifth inning of a no-decision at Milwaukee on Friday, marking his shortest outing of the season. Lackey is 2-1 with a 2.64 ERA in seven starts against the Cardinals.
Wacha is 3-1 with a 2.64 ERA over his last five starts with the only loss coming against the Cubs on Sept. 16. The 26-year-old didn’t get a decision last time out, as he allowed two runs and three hits over five innings in a 4-3 win at Pittsburgh on Friday. Wacha is 4-6 with a 6.32 ERA in 15 games (13 starts) against the Cubs.

                    WALK-OFFS
                    1. Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo is 17-for-36 with three home runs against Wacha.
                    2. St. Louis OF Randal Grichuk has hit six home runs against the Cubs this season, his most against any opponent and the most by an opposing player against Chicago.
                    3. Cardinals OF Tommy Pham (bruised left side) and Cubs OF Albert Almora Jr. (bruised right shoulder) left Tuesday’s game.

                    PREDICTION: Cardinals 6, Cubs 4

                        Gracenote
                        Sep 27, 2017

Injuries and poor play long since derailed the New York Mets’ plans for a third-consecutive playoff appearance, but outfielder Brandon Nimmo is providing a glimmer of hope for the future entering the finale of a home series Wednesday against the Atlanta Braves. Nimmo collected two hits to help the Mets rally from an early 3-0 deficit in Tuesday's 4-3 victory, and in 29 games since Aug. 27 is hitting .300 with 16 RBIs and 16 runs scored.

New York had lost six of eight entering Tuesday but its pitching staff, which started the day with a 6.18 ERA in September, shut out the Braves after allowing three runs in the first two innings. Atlanta has won four of its past seven road games, outscoring opponents 37-17 in that stretch. Center fielder Ender Inciarte lined a first-inning double Tuesday to become the first Braves player to reach 200 hits in a season since Marquis Grissom in 1996. First baseman Freddie Freeman also recorded two hits for Atlanta in the loss to raise his career average against the Mets to .312.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Southeast (Atlanta), SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves LH Sean Newcomb (4-8, 4.26 ERA) vs. Mets RH Robert Gsellman (7-7, 5.38)

Newcomb posted a 4.02 ERA in August while going 1-3 in six starts, but is 2-0 in three September outings despite having the same ERA this month. The 24-year-old rookie has won his past two starts, giving up two runs over 5 1/3 innings in each outing to beat the Mets on Sept. 15 and Philadelphia on Friday. Newcomb has greatly reduced his walks, issuing just six in his past three starts after walking 22 in his previous six games.

Gsellman is 2-1 in four September starts with a 4.50 ERA, beating the Braves in Atlanta on Sept. 17 by allowing only an unearned run on three hits in seven innings. He drew a no-decision Friday against Washington after giving up six runs (five earned) on four hits across five innings. Gsellman, who makes his 22nd start and 25th appearance of 2017, has posted a 3.82 ERA in seven games since returning from a left hamstring injury suffered in June.

                        WALK-OFFS

                        1. Braves RF Nick Markakis, who finished each of the past two seasons with 38 doubles, hit his 39th in Tuesday’s loss.

                        2. Mets RF Travis Taijeron, who came into Tuesday hitting .159, recorded two hits and drove in the game-winning run with a ninth-inning single.

                        3. Atlanta, which dropped to 10-58 when scoring three runs or fewer, left 11 runners on base Tuesday.

                        PREDICTION: Mets 5, Braves 3

The Minnesota Twins are on the verge of making history, poised to become the first team in history to advance to the postseason one year after losing 100 games. Owning a magic number of one, the Twins can punch their ticket to the playoffs when they continue their three-game series at the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday night.

Minnesota owns a five-game lead with five to play for the second wild card and needs one win or a loss by the Los Angeles Angels to complete its stunning turnaround and reach the postseason for the first time since 2010. The Twins rallied for an 8-6 victory in the series opener, going ahead on Brian Dozier's three-run homer in the eighth inning to hand Cleveland just its third loss in 32 games. Indians designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion has four homers and 14 RBIs over his last nine games after going deep and driving in four runs in Tuesday's loss. While Cleveland already has wrapped up a division title, it holds a one-game edge over Houston for home-field advantage throughout the American League playoffs.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN North (Minnesota), STO (Cleveland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins LH Adalberto Mejía (4-6, 4.48 ERA) vs. Indians RH Danny Salazar (5-6, 4.48)

Mejia has not won since July 3 and failed to pitch beyond five innings for the sixth consecutive start last time out when he permitted one run over 4 2/3 innings of a no-decision at Detroit. He was reached for 10 runs over 10 innings in his previous three turns and is 0-3 in his last eight outings. Mejia won at Cleveland on June 23, overcoming five walks in five scoreless innings of two-hit ball.

Moved to the bullpen earlier this month after returning from the disabled list, Salazar received a start last time out and struck out four while allowing one run and two hits over 2 2/3 innings. This will be another audition to determine what his role will be for the postseason. Salazar dominated the Twins in Minnesota on Aug. 15, striking out 10 and giving up one run on three hits across seven innings.

                            WALK-OFFS

                            1. Twins CF Byron Buxton stole his 23rd consecutive base Tuesday to set a Twins record.

                            2. Encarnacion is the fifth player in franchise history with at least 100 RBIs and 100 walks in the same season.

                            3. Twins LF Eddie Rosario is 6-for-12 with a homer, three doubles and five RBIs in the past three games.

                            PREDICTION: Indians 7, Twins 5
