    Sep 29, 2017

The Baltimore Orioles and Tampa Bay Rays are limping toward the finish line and simply hope to finish on a positive note when they play a three-game season-ending series in Florida beginning Friday night. The Orioles have dropped 16 of their last 20 to clinch their first losing season since 2011 and enter the last series of the season tied with Toronto in the American League East cellar.

The Rays are two games ahead in third place after riding a seven-run fifth inning to a 9-6 win at Yankee Stadium on Thursday. Corey Dickerson, Wilson Ramos and Trevor Plouffe homered as Tampa Bay snapped a three-game slide and capped off a 3-4 road trip. The first four games of the trip were in Baltimore and the divisional foes split the series to leave the season set at eight wins apiece. The Orioles, who then went to Pittsburgh and were outscored 15-4 in losing two straight, head to Tropicana Field with a 29-49 road mark.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Baltimore), FSN Sun (Tampa Bay)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles LH Wade Miley (8-14, 5.52 ERA) vs. Rays RH Jake Odorizzi (10-8, 4.26)

Miley will be making his 200th career appearance (196th start) and is looking to match last season's win total. He has failed to do so each of the last four times he's taken the hill, going 0-4 with a 9.92 ERA in September. The 30-year-old owns a 2.87 ERA in five career starts at Tropicana Field, although he gave up five runs in six innings in his last visit to Tampa Bay.

Odorizzi won four of his last five starts and has a chance to match his career high for victories, first accomplished in 2014. The former first-round pick has yielded three earned runs over 22 1/3 innings this month and limited the Orioles to an unearned run and three hits across six innings his last time out. Jonathan Schoop is 10-for-27 with five extra-base hits against Odorizzi, who is 5-4 with a lifetime 4.92 ERA versus Baltimore.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Rays 3B Evan Longoria needs one home run to reach 20 for the fifth straight season.

    2. Orioles CF Adam Jones (leg) has missed two straight games and SS Tim Beckham (hamstring) has sat out three in a row.

    3. Baltimore needs to win two of the three games to take the season series for the fourth straight time.

    PREDICTION: Rays 6, Orioles 4

GAME: Houston Astros (98-60) at Boston Red Sox (92-66)

        Preview: Astros at Red Sox

        Gracenote
        Sep 29, 2017

The Houston Astros have been giving the scoreboard operator a workout this week, registering double-digit run performances in each of their last four games. Winners of 12 of their last 14 overall, the Astros look to keep their offense clicking on all cylinders Friday in the second contest of their four-game series versus the host Boston Red Sox.

Houston (99-60) has outscored the opposition 49-9 and recorded 63 hits during its four-game winning streak to keep the heat on Cleveland (100-59) as the clubs bid for the top spot in the American League. Carlos Correa posted his second straight four-hit performance to improve to 15-for-25 with three homers, 13 RBIs and nine runs scored during his last six games overall and 9-for-15 versus Boston this season. The Red Sox have answered a six-game winning streak by losing three of four, but their magic number to capture their second AL East title in as many seasons was reduced to one after the second-place New York Yankees dropped a 9-6 decision to Tampa Bay on Thursday. Xander Bogaerts had an RBI single in a 12-2 rout on Thursday, improving to 11-for-27 with nine runs scored during his seven-game hitting streak.

        TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet-Southwest (Houston), NESN (Boston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Charlie Morton (13-7, 3.63 ERA) vs. Red Sox RH Doug Fister (5-8, 4.87)

Morton allowed just one run for the second straight outing on Saturday to improve to 8-4 with a 3.33 ERA in 14 starts since being activated from the disabled list. "My sinker was moving pretty good today," the 33-year-old Morton told reporters after scattering four hits over seven innings in a 6-2 triumph versus the Los Angeles Angels. "... I threw some decent changeups, some decent sinkers and fortunately the balls that were put in play found some guys." Morton has flustered Hanley Ramirez (1-for-13) in his career and kept Chris Young (3-for-12) at bay while having limited experience the other members of the Red Sox.

Fister saw his winless stretch extend to three outings on Sunday after allowing three runs over 5 1/3 innings of a no-decision at Cincinnati. The 33-year-old has posted an 0-1 mark while permitting 14 runs on 19 hits in 11 1/3 innings in that stretch. Fister has sputtered at Fenway Park this season, recording a 3-6 mark with a 4.93 ERA.

        WALK-OFFS

        1. Boston 2B Dustin Pedroia is 3-for-33 during his last nine contests.

        2. Houston OF Marwin Gonzalez is 12-for-20 with one homer, eight RBIs and six runs scored during his five-game hitting streak.

        3. Red Sox LF Andrew Benintendi went 0-for-4 in the series opener and is 1-for-13 against the Astros this season.

PREDICTION: Astros 6, Red Sox 3

            Sep 29, 2017

The Oakland Athletics have run roughshod over their opponents with wins in 16 of their last 21 contests overall, in addition to seven straight against the Texas Rangers. The Athletics aim to improve upon both marks on Friday as the American League West rivals play the second contest of their four-game series in Arlington, Texas.

Rookie Matt Chapman homered among his two hits in Thursday's 4-1 victory to improve to 11-for-24 with six RBIs and as many runs scored versus the Rangers this season. Ryon Healy continued his September to remember with a go-ahead two-run single to highlight his two-hit performance, upping his batting average to .313 this month. While Oakland has aspirations of avoiding yet another last-place finish in the AL West, Texas is looking to put an end of a season-high seven-game skid in which it has been outscored 49-9 in the last five. Willie Calhoun crossed the plate for his team's lone run on Thursday and has three hits and two runs scored in his last two games after going 0-for-12 in his previous seven.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, NBCSN California (Oakland), FSN Southwest (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Athletics RH Raul Alcantara (1-1, 6.86 ERA) vs. Rangers LH Martin Perez (12-12, 4.83)

Alcantara turned in his second straight strong start on Saturday as the 24-year-old Dominican scattered two hits over five scoreless innings in a 1-0 victory versus Texas. "The command of the fastball is better," manager Bob Melvin said of Alcantara. "It looks to me like his split and slider are better, and he's pitching with a lot more confidence. It's good to see." Alcantara is making his third straight spot start, this time as a fill-in for fellow right-hander Jharel Cotton, who has been shut down after dealing with right elbow soreness.

Perez has answered seven straight wins with an 0-2 mark and 4.96 ERA in his last three starts, including a five-run effort in an 8-1 loss to Oakland on Sunday. "I think control was a little bit off," Rangers acting manager Steve Buechele said following the 26-year-old Venezuelan's performance. "Four walks. He got some ground balls that snuck their way through, but I think overall today was just one those where he was just a little bit out of rhythm and didn't have the command and crispness he's had in his last few starts." Perez owns a 1-2 mark with a 5.93 ERA in three starts this season versus the Athletics.

            WALK-OFFS

            1. Oakland LF Khris Davis had two hits in the series opener and 13 overall against Texas this season.

            2. Rangers 3B Joey Gallo is 3-for-27 with 18 strikeouts in his last nine contests.

            3. Oakland SS Marcus Semien is 0-for-7 on the heels of an eight-game hitting streak

                Sep 29, 2017

Minnesota Twins right-hander Kyle Gibson owns an ugly 7.01 ERA in five starts against the Detroit Tigers this season, but he will look to win his seventh consecutive decision when the teams open a three-game series in Motown on Friday night. Gibson looks to keep his unbeaten streak intact when he faces the Tigers for the second time in eight days.

The Twins locked up the second wild card Wednesday night and chose to sit a number of starters in Thursday's 5-2 loss to Cleveland, a scenario that could repeat itself over the weekend. "We want to give some of these guys a little bit of a break, but also keep them sharp. It's a little tricky," Minnesota manager Paul Molitor said. "We'll have further conversations about pitching over the next four days as we might best set ourselves up for a roster on Tuesday." The Tigers can finally exhale after snapping a nine-game losing streak with a 4-1 victory over Kansas City -- their fifth win in 26 games this month. Nicholas Castellanos drove in three runs Thursday while registering multiple hits for the 13th time in his last 22 games.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, FSN Detroit, FSN North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers LH Matthew Boyd (6-10, 5.12 ERA) vs. Twins RH Kyle Gibson (12-10, 5.02)

Boyd is finishing on a high note, permitting only two runs over 20 2/3 innings over his last three starts, although he is 1-1 in that span. The 26-year-old did not factor in the decision against Minnesota last time out, giving up two runs (one earned) in 6 2/3 strong innings. Brian Dozier is 11-for-27 with two homers against Boyd, who gave up four runs in 5 2/3 innings versus the Twins on Aug. 13.

Gibson was hammered by Detroit for 12 runs in 6 2/3 innings in a pair of starts in April, but he won his second in a row over the Tigers by giving up three runs on seven hits over seven innings in his last turn. It was his sixth quality start in the past seven outings for the 29-year-old, who is 6-7 with a 5.65 ERA at Target Field. Ian Kinsler is 13-for-40 with a pair of home runs against Gibson.

                WALK-OFFS

                1. Tigers LF Alex Presley has hit safely in five straight games.

                2. Twins RF Max Kepler is 8-for-22 over the past five games.

                3. Tigers 3B Jeimer Candelario, batting .354 in September, was held out of Thursday's game with a jammed left wrist.

                PREDICTION: Tigers 5, Twins 4

                    Sep 29, 2017

The Chicago Cubs don’t need much out of their season-ending three-game series beginning Friday against the visiting Cincinnati Reds. The Cubs only need to stay healthy and get their star players enough action to remain sharp for next week’s National League Division Series.

The Cubs ran out a lineup that included only two regular starters Thursday — a day after clinching the division — but still managed a 2-1 win in 11 innings to take three of four from rival St. Louis. Chicago has won 13 of its last 16 games to clinch a playoff spot for the third straight year. The Reds have lost eight of their last nine as they play out the string despite hot hitting from Scooter Gennett (11-game hitting streak) and Joey Votto (nine-game hitting streak). Cincinnati will finish last in the NL Central for the third straight season.
TV: 2:20 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FSN Ohio (Cincinnati), CSN Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds RH Robert Stephenson (5-6, 4.86 ERA) vs. Cubs LH Jose Quintana (11-11, 4.06)
Stephenson has made a strong case for a spot in next year’s rotation by going 5-2 with a 2.87 ERA over his last seven starts. The 24-year-old recorded his fourth quality start in his last five outings last time out, allowing four runs (two earned) over six innings in a 5-0 loss to Boston. Stephenson is 0-2 with a 6.08 ERA in six appearances (two starts) against the Cubs.
Quintana has gone 7-3 with a 3.50 ERA in 13 starts since being acquired from the White Sox, and he appears poised to be a major contributor in the postseason. The 28-year-old Colombian is coming off his second career shutout – a three-hitter at Milwaukee in which he struck out 10. Quintana faced the Reds for the first time on Aug. 14 at Wrigley Field and earned the win, allowing two runs (one earned) over five innings.

                    WALK-OFFS
                    1. The Cubs lead the season series 10-6 and have outscored the Reds 114-89.
                    2. Votto has reached base in 29 straight games, the longest active streak in the majors and tied for his longest this season.
                    3. Cincinnati CF Billy Hamilton needs one stolen base to become the first Reds' player with 60 steals in a season since Eric Davis in 1986.

                    PREDICTION: Cubs 4, Reds 2

                        Preview: Braves at Marlins

                        Gracenote
                        Sep 29, 2017

While the Miami Marlins have an offseason of change to look forward to with a new ownership group set to take over, Giancarlo Stanton is doing everything in his power to leave his mark on the current campaign. The four-time All-Star attempts to become the sixth different player in major-league history to join the 60-homer club Friday when the Marlins host the second of four games against the struggling Atlanta Braves.

Stanton became the first player in the majors since 2001 to hit at least 59 home runs in a season when he notched his 10th multi-homer effort in 2017 in Thursday's 7-1 series-opening victory for Miami, which learned Wednesday that a group led by Bruce Sherman and Derek Jeter had unanimously been approved to take over the team. The 27-year-old also broke a little-known major-league home run record with his 47th homer from the No. 2 spot in the batting order, breaking the old mark set by Hall of Famer Eddie Mathews in 1959. While the Marlins guaranteed themselves no worse than a second-place finish in the National League East - their best since 2009 - with the win, the Braves dropped their fourth straight and fell for the fifth time in six contests. Atlanta needs to win out to pull even with Miami and take two of the final three contests to avoid three straight 90-loss seasons for the first time since 1988-90.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN South (Atlanta), FSN Florida (Miami)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves LH Luiz Gohara (1-3, 4.63 ERA) vs. Marlins RH Dan Straily (10-9, 4.08)

Gohara enjoyed the finest of his four career starts in a hard-luck loss to Philadelphia on Sunday, yielding only a solo homer among the five hits he allowed while striking out nine in seven frames. The performance was more in line with what the 21-year-old Brazilian did before his early-September promotion, as he posted a 2.62 ERA and fanned 147 over 122 2/3 innings in three minor-league stops. Gohara permitted two runs (one earned) over six innings in his only road outing at Washington on Sept. 13.

Straily settled for a no-decision Sunday at Arizona despite logging his first quality start in September, allowing one run on four hits and three walks over six innings. The 28-year-old Marshall product, who fanned nine to set a career high for strikeouts in a season with 167, has fared much better at home (5-3, 3.18 ERA) than on the road (5-6, 4.95). Straily was tagged for four runs (three earned) across five frames in a no-decision at Atlanta on Sept. 7 and is 2-1 with a 2.86 ERA in four starts versus the Braves this season.

                        WALK-OFFS

                        1. With two hits and a steal Thursday, Marlins 2B Dee Gordon became the third player in major-league history to record at least two seasons with at least 196 hits and 58 stolen bases, joining Ty Cobb (five times) and Juan Pierre (three).

                        2. Atlanta is 34-17 at Marlins Park since the venue opened in 2012 despite Thursday's setback.

                        3. Miami OF Ichiro Suzuki tallied his 27th pinch hit of the year in the opener, one shy of the record John Vander Wal set in 1995.

                        PREDICTION: Marlins 5, Braves 3

The Cleveland Indians have recorded the third 100-victory season in franchise history and look to tack on another win when they host the Chicago White Sox in Friday's opener of a three-game set. The Indians joined their 1954 and 1995 squads, who won 111 and 100 contests, respectively.

Cleveland is still trying to hold off the Houston Astros (99-60) for best record in the American League and manager Terry Francona doesn't want his players satisfied with reaching the century mark. "I'm not downplaying it, because it's really cool," Francona told reporters. "I'm proud of our guys. It's meaningful. It means that we won a lot of games. But we have a lot more - hopefully - a lot more baseball ahead of us." The Indians are 31-3 since Aug. 24 but the White Sox are also playing well with Thursday's 5-4 win over the Los Angeles Angels representing their 12th victory in 19 games. Chicago first baseman Jose Abreu was hitless in four at-bats Thursday after being 9-for-21 over the previous five games.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, CSN Chicago, STO (Cleveland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox RH Mike Pelfrey (3-11, 5.52 ERA) vs. Indians RH Trevor Bauer (16-9, 4.28)

Pelfrey is starting for just the second time since Aug. 6 and has lost his past six decisions. The 33-year-old's most recent start was in an 11-2 loss against the Indians on Sept. 7 when he served up three homers and allowed seven runs and eight hits over four innings. Pelfrey is 0-2 with a 7.36 ERA in three appearances (two starts) against Cleveland this season and is 2-4 with a 4.45 ERA in 12 career appearances (10 starts).

Bauer received a no-decision against the Seattle Mariners in his last start - allowing one run and five hits over seven innings - for his second straight winless start after being victorious in nine consecutive decisions. The 26-year-old is 9-4 with a 4.08 ERA in 16 home starts and has allowed 15 of his 24 blasts at Progressive Field. Bauer is 5-2 with a 3.73 ERA in 13 career appearances (11 starts) against Chicago, including a victory on Sept. 4 when he gave up two runs and three hits over 6 1/3 innings.

                            WALK-OFFS

                            1. The Indians are 11-5 against the White Sox this season, including 3-3 at Progressive Field.

                            2. Cleveland INF Jose Ramirez (88) and SS Francisco Lindor (81) are the club's first duo to have at least 80 extra-base hits in a season since Manny Ramirez and Albert Belle in 1996.

                            3. Chicago LHP Carlos Rodon (shoulder) underwent arthroscopic surgery and will require a recovery period of six-to-eight months.

PREDICTION: Indians 8, White Sox 4

                                #3 CURSOR
                                #5 ARELLA ROCKSTAR

#1 ROYAL INHERITANCE qualifies as a TrackMaster PLUS "PowerPony," and has produced "POWER RUNS" in each of her last four outings, including a trio of "POWER RUN WINS" being embedded in this recent streak of racing consistency. #2 RUN AND GO, the morning line favorite, is the overall speed and pace profile leader, has nice early speed to compliment for this sprint, and is undefeated in a two race career, winning both in "POWER RUN FASHION." Jockey Javier Castellano was in her irons for those two wins, en route to a +225% return on investment in the process, and Castellano is back today for his 3rd ride, gunning for a "Hat Trick Win!"
